The 21-year-old winger has scored two goals in 15 first-team games so far this season and follows in the footsteps of his twin brother, Jacob, who signed a new long-term deal with City in November.

'I'm really happy to get this done,' Murphy said, after extending his contract until the summer of 2021.

'It's another four-and-a-half years at the club I love. I've always wanted to play in this first team and I've enjoyed every minute.

'My main focus now is getting a regular place in the team and helping us push right back up the league. We're not that far off the play-offs now and everyone's aim is to get back in the Premier League.'

The skilful attacker was a key part of the Canaries' under-18 squad which won the FA Youth Cup in 2013 and has gone on to make 44 appearances for the first team, scoring six goals in total.

The London-born twins signed for the club as under-12s and are now both established as first-team players.

Josh made his debut in September 2013, coming on as a substitute in a League Cup tie at Watford and scoring a long-range screamer to spark a comeback in a 3-2 victory.

After a string of Premier League appearances as a substitute in 2013/14, Murphy played a bit-part role when the Canaries returned to the Championship the following season and spent a brief five-game spell with Wigan.

The former England Under-20 international then spent all of last season in the Championship with MK Dons, scoring seven goals in 46 games and winning Players' Player of the Season.

'It's great news for the future of the club,' City boss Alex Neil added, speaking to his club's website. 'In the games he's played this season, Josh has shown the qualities that he does have.

'He's got blistering pace, he's got real athleticism and he's a goal threat in pretty much every minute of the game. Those types of players are rare and hopefully he can become a first-team regular.

'We're delighted that he's committed his long-term future to Norwich City and it shows that we're retaining our better players, which is a great sign for the club.'

Murphy has also scored six goals in six games for City's under-23s this season, including a hat-trick in a 5-0 win at Barnet in the Checkatrade Trophy group stages in October.
