Highly-rated French striker Sebastien Haller is ruling out a late transfer U-turn to join Norwich City.

Haller held talks with Alex Neil on a flying visit to Colney earlier this month, but the 21-year-old will not be returning ahead of Monday’s 11pm deadline.

The Canaries’ top brass are still actively looking to bolster Neil’s squad, ahead of the window closing, after bringing in four new players and sealing a permanent deal for Matt Jarvis.

City agreed a fee with FC Utrecht for Haller but the frontman, who has hit 11 goals in 19 games in the Dutch top flight, aims to stay in Holland this season.

“The story was all that I was medically examined, it was rubbish,” he said, in an interview with Dutch magazine Voetbal International. “I was not going to play football at Norwich City. I have a different plan in my head and that is until the summer to stay with FC Utrecht and play in the coming months to try and get the club into the Europa League. Norwich is the only club that has come in so far with a bid.

“Apart from that I think a winter transfer too risky. You come to a new club halfway in and have to adapt quickly. There is actually no time for that.

“It’s about me and finding the right moment to arrive at a good club; a club with a good plan for the future. For now my goal is really to achieve something with FC Utrecht.”

Neil made his own feelings clear on Haller’s marked reluctance to try his luck in the English top flight prior to the 5-4 Premier League defeat against Liverpool.

“We are all aware the Premier League is bigger than the Europa League,” said Neil. “So if he comes here and scores goals in the Premier League your stock would go a hell of a lot higher than if you score a few goals in the Europa on a Thursday night.”

  • Another non-story Archie. Sounds like a guy with a lot of self belief. That's good and bad but I doubt if we will ever see him at CR as it sounds like he is angling for a bigger fish. If so, forget him and move on. Looks from the photo that his mouth is on the side of his face. Quite bizarre. I do agree with his statement that a winter move can be risky - adjusting from a position of comfort in the Dutch league to a Premier League relegation scr-ap would be significant.

  • I would settle for another good centre back and go with the strikers we have. With Naismith, Jarvis fit, and Brady and Hoolahan available, I think our striker will get many more balls into the area, or have a physical Naismith in the area when the striker takes defenders out wide, so goals will come, as we saw last Saturday. We just have to shore up the defense so we concede one less than we score each game. Maybe even settle for a really good PL proven defensive coach.

  • Got to agree with Edinburgh Canary on Bamford. We are very unlikely to sign a proven Premiership striker as time has run out but I liked the look of Bamford when playing for Middlesborough. He always seemed to be on the score sheet and has found it hard to get game time at C.Palace for what ever reason, considering that C.P. have scored four goals less than us this season. Javier Hernandez was shipped out by Man.U. and has now scored 15 in last 12 games for Bayer Leverkusen and his value has rocketed. Not suggesting the two players are equal but my point is that a change of club and new teammates can sometimes rejuvenate a player and if we sign him, we can only hope the same will apply.

  • Completely agree that Bamford is unproven in premier league. However same for Afobe and most wanted us to sign him and he is already scoring goals for Bournemouth. Bamford was scoring goals for fun at Middlesbrough last season and was injured playing against us in the league draw at Carrow road and never really recovered after that. It appears he got next to no game time for Palace this season never even started a game as far as I remember. Its a difficult one but Bamford clearly has potential. I think he might be like Hooper really needs lots of game time to get going. We need someone who can just get going and score from the off. AN doesn't give forwards other than Jerome much of a run! So i'm not 100% convinced he is the answer but would still be happy to see him signed.

  • They're back, cutty! This transfer window will soon be over and Alex can concentrate on squeezing a further 15+ points out of his players. Then, if we survive, he must be given swift and decisive support from the Board to ensure we do not go into another Prem Season so ill- prepared as we did this one. All that Pop goes the Weasel stuff didn't help. Chrissie out. Adams half in, then in. Uncle Joe Royle in and out. Assistant Robson out. Mike Phelan in. Adams out. Alex in. Phelan out.

  • I really hope we don't sign Bamford. He had a good season on loan in the Championship but he has very little PL experience which is what we need. Unless of course the club sign him on a perm basis with one eye next season in the Championship. If he couldn't get a game at Palace under a good manager you'd have to wonder why. I do hope we don't try to trawl the skips out the back of Palace for their rejects. Given that we've been linked with Gayle and now Jedinak.

  • Highly likely he only came to see what was on offer to get an improved contract out of his current club. You would assume he wants to move in the Summer and didn't want to take a chance of getting relegated. Maybe he didn't like the housing, hotel, city or something else. Or possibly we wouldn't allow a release clause. Given he'd be playing against PL teams in the Champions League or Europa. The whole excuse given by his agent p#imp doesn't wash.

  • Should we stay up maybe he's agreed to join in the summer. Who knows? Ideally we still get a striker in, maybe on loan - Bamford is the obvious target. I see Jamar Loza has rejoined Southend on loan for the rest of the season with a view to permanent deal. I like the look of Exeter striker Tom Nicholls, he would be a cheap buy and looks a decent prospect at 22 years of age. He works his socks off and reminds me of a certain Jamie Vardy.

  • daily mail reporting this morning that they have agreed a loan deal for Bamford to come to us,not a very exciting move but not costing us much I guess, could be a good back up I guess and he was quite prolific at Middlesborough a couple of seasons ago so you never know, dont see him as a lone striker up front though.

  • I hope the board's biggest critics will note that this is further evidence of the difficulties attracting players to Norwich. As has been said by others, the present squad has goals enough, my priority would be a defensive midfielder as cover for Tettey and O'Neil; then ship out Dorrans and Mulumbu, if we can find buyers.

  • Nothing to see here, move along please. He has his reasons and that's fine. I agree with G_F_U that we need to be keeping goals out. The problem that AN has to solve is having a team that is flexible enough to put a threat on to the opposition goal and then pull back and to defend as a unit. We don't seem to be very consistent with that at the moment.

  • David Evans - If we stay up, then I agree, I would warrant he'll could well be with us over summer given his statement of being involved mid-season ain't his thing. In all fairness though, we can score goals. It's keeping them out that's the issue. Another CB andor defensive midfielder would be nice.

  • So I guess this is what can happen if you show too much ambition with proposed signings. Bit like Alderweireld (spl?) a couple of seasons back. Lots could be read into his comments. But fair play. If he doesn't want to come to Norwich, much better for us that he's open and honest about it, rather than stringing us along. Good luck to him. From our side, unless we're going to get someone who is much better than Hanson (M-bok, M-M-M-M-Bok, do do do) then I'd rather we wait until the summer for a striker and focus efforts (and money) elsewhere.
