Alex Neil has the best wishes of Hamilton’s supporters as he completes his move to Norwich City.
The 33-year-old has achieved legendary status with the Academical’s fan base during a decade of service which has seen Hamilton push for a European place this season.
Brandon Coghill, from the ‘We are Hamilton’ fan site, interviewed Neil on Thursday at New Douglas Park following confirmation the Canaries had agreed compensation with his current club.
“There might be some out there who think Norwich have taken the cheap option. Norwich is getting one of the hottest young prospects in Scotland,” he said. “He’ll surprise quite a few people down there. He has done brilliantly for us. We don’t want to let him go but it’s a massive opportunity and we can’t stand in his way. Norwich compared to Hamilton is a massive club. We are trying to get European football so it is disappointing. If someone had said to me at the start of the season we could finish 10th and survive I would have grabbed their hand off. We have beaten our rivals Motherwell, 5-0 and 4-0, we went to Celtic Park and won 1-0 for the first time since before the First World War. What Alex has achieved is unbelievable in the past 10 years. He has worked wonders.”
Coghill insists Neil will have no problem handling a City squad with some big characters.
“He is an authoritarian. He doesn’t take any prisoners and he won’t have any problem handing the older players with big reputations,” he said. “He’ll take that in his stride, even though he has mainly put his faith in the youngsters who love him and look up to him. He likes attacking, free-flowing football. He’ll never sit back and play boring football. It doesn’t matter if he is playing the team at the bottom of the league or Celtic away he wants to play attractive football.”
“It’s a great opportunity, to go and manage in the English Championship is a great opportunity for anyone, but I’m Hamilton manager at the moment and until that changes I won’t make any more comment on Norwich.”
