Plymouth Argyle have signed goalkeeper Remi Matthews on loan from Norwich City for the remainder of the season.

Matthews returns to Plymouth having made seven appearances for the League One side during an emergency loan spell earlier in the campaign which was brought to an end in late November by an ankle injury.

The Plymouth Herald had recently reported that Argyle faced competition from two other clubs for the 23-year-old’s signature but the Gorleston-born keeper will return to Devon.

He initially signs on a seven-day emergency loan until January 1, due to a keeper injury crisis which has forced manager Derek Adams to use seven different players between the posts so far this season.

Derby keeper Kelle Roos helped Argyle to claim 10 points from a possible 12 but was needed by the Rams as cover so couldn’t stay for a longer spell, with Matthews now set to stay until May 31.

The Canaries keeper conceded just six goals and kept four clean sheets during his seven game, taking his overall career tally to 49 matches, none of which have been for his parent club, although he was on the bench for two EFL Cup games earlier this season.

League One spells with Burton Albion and Doncaster Rovers kick-started his professional experience in 2015-16, before a full campaign with Scottish Premiership side Hamilton last season.

Punctured by three months out with a shoulder injury, the tall keeper made 27 appearances for Accies, conceding 37 goals and keeping eight clean sheets.

That was enough to prompt City to sign Matthews up to a new contract in October, extending his deal until 2019, with the club holding the option of a further 12 months.
