Daniel Farke admits he lost his cool with his Norwich City squad in a testing 2-0 friendly win on Tuesday night at Charlton.

Farke was angry at the Canaries’ sluggish first half at the Valley, despite leading through Yanic Wildschut’s opening goal. Steven Naismith sealed the win following the interval, but there is plenty of work to do for the German.

“Yes, I was (angry). I don’t go too deep with it. We are working together four weeks and sometimes you don’t always reach the level,” he said. “We spoke a lot about my ideas and philosophy but sometimes after a first half like that you have a reminder about the basics. You can’t win just with philosophy. You have to run, you have to fight and be concentrated. As a coach sometimes you are content that there is some sloppiness you can work on.

“I don’t want the guys to be too self-confident but we will speak about negative things in the coming days. We were not in the fighting mode you need to be in. I won’t speak about individuals but for sure there are things we could improve and we will work on.”

Farke acknowledged City’s gruelling pre-season schedule, and a number of injuries, may have been a factor but the Canaries’ chief delivered more mixed news on the fitness front after the latest victory.

“Yes, maybe that was one of the reasons for the first half. We have put a lot of load on the guys who have to stand on the pitch but I want us to fight against setbacks and to be there each and every day, even if it is a hard situation,” he said. “I got this feeling we didn’t have that fighting attitude. Wes Hoolahan trained with the squad today but it is too early for him. I hope Ivo Pinto can return to the team training in the week but will need some time and Harry Toffolo will hopefully return next week.

“Jamal Lewis has some pain in his knee. During two days off he has a brilliant attitude and wanted to do extra work but perhaps it was too much for him. Maybe a little bit naïve but I like that attitude.

“I think the tests we had in Germany were against opponents with much more preparation for their season, a better mood and attitude. This was a hard test but I think the German teams were more difficult. We played nearly 90 minutes in those games and dominated and were concentrated over there. Here for only 45 minutes.”
