Outspoken Leeds boss Steve Evans appears to have admitted defeat in his attempt to sign Canaries striker Kyle Lafferty, citing 'huge' costs.

Evans' pursuit of Lafferty stretches back some months, but, speaking after his team's FA Cup exit at Watford, he claimed the price of a deal would cause problems within the Elland Road dressing room.

In a radio interview, Evans said: 'What Norwich were asking for – if you add the package on top of that... I'm not going to give you the numbers as it would be unprofessional, but it was huge. Huge.

'It would have completely ripped the dressing room apart.

'I have a responsibility as the head coach. I'm not saying that somebody can't come in and earn a bit more if they have got that much more quality, but we can't have most lads earning one and somebody coming in on 12 – that just wouldn't be right.'

Lafferty joined City in June, 2014, signing a three-year contract, and while he has been unable to command a place in Alex Neil's matchday squad, his stock is high on the international stage, where he helped Northern Ireland reach Euro 2016.

Meanwhile, Norwich City's on-loan midfielder Conor McGrandles suffered a double leg break in Falkirk's 1-0 Scottish Championship win over Morton.

McGrandles. 20, tweeted: 'Gutted to say I've suffered a double leg break.

'Can't thank everyone enough at the pitch and in the hospital for keeping me calm and helping me.'

Bairns manager Peter Houston said: 'My thoughts are more with Conor than being delighted with any victory. He's a young lad we've brought up from Norwich; a former Falkirk player. It's certainly put a huge dampener on what was a valuable three points for us.'
