Consistency is Norwich City’s missing ingredient according to Jonny Howson – and it’s the reason why the Canaries won’t be taking things easy in the cup on Saturday.

While City hit the heights with a 6-1 Boxing Day demolition of Millwall, their subsequent Sunday defeat at Reading to round off 2014 left Neil Adams’ men 10 points off the Championship’s top-two.

Some might see Saturday’s FA Cup third-round tie at League One Preston North End as getting in the way of City’s league focus – but Howson is not one of them.

“It’s maybe what we need now, that consistency,” he said. “We know we can do it and put in good performances, and sometimes it’s consistency that’s the difference – whenever you want to achieve something over a long period of time, that’s the thing you need.

“The fact we’ve missed it is frustrating, especially when some weeks it’s not a case of just getting the results – we’ve put in some very good performances.

“Everyone will look at the FA Cup differently. I’m sure some people will look at it as the league being the main focus, and others will look at it as you wanting to win every game you’re involved in.

“For us, it’s a case of any game you play in – even a friendly – no one likes to lose. Now our focus will be on Saturday because they are going well in the league, and they’re a good side. So it’s going to be a difficult game and we’ve got to be right at it.”

  • Does anyone on here deny (or make excuses) for the simple fact that at the start of the seasons, with Johnson and Wes in central roles and NO HOWSON, we were top of the league. When we lost Wes to injury and Johnson was dropped in favour of the "creativity" of Howson we then went on that terrible run of form. It is no coincidence that we dropped Turner and immediately had 23 clean sheets with his replacement Cuellar and since Johnson was restored to the starting 11 our results have been good again. And just look at how many goals we have scored since Wes returned with his assists. This is a TEAM game and I'm afraid results don't lie.... We just aren't the same with Howson. For me, get O'Neil and Johnson together in CM and Wes in his favoured role... And stop this ridiculous 4 Central Midfield line up.

  • I'll go along with that Waclor. I miss the day when teams like Ipswich and us finished in the top six. The premier league has arguably done neither team any favours. My second team is Burnley at the moment. Thought they were fabulous against Man City

  • True Blue I have been a Norwich supporter for fifty years but I am delighted to see you second and would be very happy to see you go up as champions. Why? Because it is gratifying to see a team triumphing because of the talent of the manager rather than the bank balance of the owner. The last example of this was Ipswich Town under George Burley. He took them up and kept virtually the same team in the Prem and finished 6th I believe. Then the club went all conventional, bought a load of overpriced rubbish, destroyed the dressing room and went down. Go for it, it gives everybody hope.

  • Errrrr. True Blue, we've just passed the halfway point in the fixtures, so how can Ipswich have played more of the top six than anyone else? Oh well, blue logic I guess. All at The Carra are looking forward to February when Ipswich bring their skill to display against the Canaries. Another double in the offing for the Yella!

  • Disingenuous in Dubai, did you get down to Portman Rd to see all these teams play so badly against us? I assume you must have done to be able to make such a judgement. I mean even Aitor conceded that we played awfully well against his boro side and he watched the full 90 mins but I guess you must know the best. Gosh so lucky, all those lucky goals for Murphnio, all that lucky colossal defending. yeah. when teams play Ipswich they all seem to have an off day, fact is we have beaten or held teams when they have a head of steam and momentum. Boro, unbeaten in how many then lost, Bournemouth on their own patch held, The bees who were top of the form table come up against the mighty Town and yes victory was ours. What a coincidence that all those teams playing so well suddenly have an off day against us, could there be an explanation for it, perhaps, I don’t know they came up against a superiors side. I think we have played more teams in the top 6 so far this season than anyone else, yet it’s all luck. The only luck we have had this season is bad luck when the linesman failed to spot Grabban offiside for his goal against us. Now we may well fade, as you have found out it’s a tough old league but the table doesn’t lie and right now the table says we are 2nd. COYB wayhay!

  • DJ - you are right the table doesn't lie - we have been poor for periods this season and our six fingered cousins down the road have ground out some better results. However, consider this - scrap league points altogether and just base league places upon GD. If you look at the PL hardly anything changes at all. Look at the Chump GD's and there are precious little changes there too. However, it does look a little bit more realistic when you make this comparison.

  • Dubai, leagues don't lie and luck sorta evens itself out over a season. If teams have failed to perform against them, then that may well mean Ipswich have tactically got it right and stopped them playing. Given your very shaky track-record on predictions, I wouldn't place any odds on your advice. Ipswich are where they are on merit and have momentum. Crucial January for all of us - Murphys goals will not have gone unnoticed. Still a long way to go this season and I remain confident of at least a play-off place.

  • Consistency is the key, Howson is quoted as saying “The fact we’ve missed it is frustrating, especially when some weeks it’s not a case of just getting the results – we’ve put in some very good performances". This sums up our problem as the manager likewise continues to make this same quote, they delude themselves. Both Reading games are a prime examples, I fear this pattern will continue for the rest of the season so we can certainly forget automatic promotion. We may get lucky and grab a play off place. I have only seen Howson have one really good game, in others he has moments but that is never enough.

  • Alan Mason - 1p5wich have been very lucky in that they have faced teams who simply played very poorly against them on the day. Charlton (twice), Brentford, Middlesbrough, Watford, Wolves, Brighton, Leeds & Fulham were all woeful against them, although they have all had times when they have played well this season. I do not believe that 1p5wich can sustain their position although I do give a huge amount of credit to Mad Mick, who has done a great job. If they do get to the PL league next season their record 9-0 loss will be under severe threat - on a regular basis, i'd imagine !!

  • If the club is consistent Howson will be one of the first team regulars rested for the cup. Right now however we have no hope of automatic promotion so why not pick the team that failed so badly at Reading and give them the opportunity to make amends by rekindling the spirit of 59 when success in the cup was the foundation for promotion.

  • Don't go on telling us what we have known for much of this season. Full credit to Bournemouth and Ipswich, especially given their financial resources. Yes, both may well lose form at some stage. But both have shown they are a long way ahead of Norwich in attitude, passion, character and belief.

  • My current analogy: NCFC with Howson is like Arsenal (watching them now) playing with Corzola. Whilst critics think he's a great player, Arsenal are a better TEAM with Wiltshere and Ramsey. Great to see Gibbs and Bertrand both flying.... Reminds me of Kyle Naughton.

  • Pretty flat end to the year and not much hope of promotion now given our erratic form this season. Anyway, if it will cheer anyone up, 1p5wich have about as much chance of getting into the PL as I have of winning Spot the Ball ! Good to see Fer still banging in the goals for QPR - selling him was the worst decision since keeping Hughton too long, and then appointing Adam's as manager ! Looks like we will be playing the not-so super blues in the Chumpy again next season, at least they are good for 6 points !!

How about this, we remember how we started the season with Johnson and Tettey in midfield..... You know? When we were top.... Of yes, before the untouchable returned to the centre of the midfield and we lost or drew the next 10-12 games.

Too many of our squad lack concentration over 90 minutes and the second goal conceded at Reading highlighted that. Howson certainly falls into that category and few in the team should be certain of playing on Saturday.
