Jonny Howson insists Norwich City players know they must cut out ‘silly mistakes’

Norwich City’s players understand the seriousness of the club’s predicament – and that of Neil Adams – according to Jonny Howson.

For most supporters, the Canaries’ bid for Championship promotion hit crisis point with Saturday’s home defeat to Reading at the weekend.

Adams remains in post, with Malky Mackay’s Wigan – a Premier League club 18 months ago, but currently sitting in the bottom three – awaiting City at the DW Stadium on Saturday.

“I think you know in yourself (how serious the situation is),” said Howson. “We’re obviously struggling for form at the minute and the way football is these days, everyone wants instant success. They want it there and then. That’s part and parcel of football these days.

“We’ve said it for a few weeks – in general play we feel we’re doing all right. It’s just mistakes that we’ve got to cut out. And we can’t keep saying it – we’ve got to go out there and do it.”

Howson added: “Very much so (Adams should be given more time). It’s up to us as players to go out there and cut out these silly mistakes.”

Mike Phelan’s introduction as first-team coach alongside manager Adams and Gary Holt had only ran for two days before Saturday’s defeat – and so the theory goes, City’s corridors of power may well hope a full week’s work at Colney can offer better judgement on the situation.

“It should help,” said Howson. “He’s come in, he’s new in, he’s spoken to a few of us. But I’m sure that will take time. Someone of his experience is always welcome on board. Certainly with what he’s done in the game, especially at Manchester United, he’s won everything with them, worked with world-class players world-class staff.

“So I think no matter what team you are in the world, to have someone like him on board is only going to be a positive.”

  • The Norwich City players make silly mistakes because obviously they are not good enough and not suitable for the style of play NA demands from them - they are not quick enough (Whittaker, Hoolahan), or not confident enough with the ball (Turner, Johnson), or not tactically clever enough to make quick falls (Tettey, Howson) when the ball is lost in the midfield and all defenders are getting forward to support the "Norwich way of playing". So there is a big mismatch between the capabilities of these players and NA philosophy for the game. To have a success in this situation you must either change the players, or change the style of play. Sooner NA understands this, better for his career with NCFC as manager. Unfortunately he will not be given enough time to change the players and I’m not sure whether he can change his philosophy and take the maximum from what is available.. So it seems he is doomed. The question is whether NCFC should sink with him?

  • …..AC !...There has been a massive change in our style compared to last season!…Last season and much of the previous one, our manager (Hughton), decided to do away with the 'team' approach, and had his signing Snodgrass on the ball, all of the time!...This ruined everything that had been achieved under Lambert!....The remaining players, especially after Holt was put to the sword, became no more than individualists!....Snodgrass has moved on, leaving a void that Captain Martin has tried to fill...unsuccessfully!....The remaining players whomever gets chosen, seem only interested in themselves and their prospects...with one exception...Hoolahan!...and he is injured at present!....Sorry to report that Neil Adams has been unable to bring about a turnaround in playing style or fortunes!.....Maybe a more ruthless approach (Phelan) we hope can get these lads to gel more effectively!.....

  • Hi MB Unfortunately I cant watch championship games live. I am assuming that a similar style of play exists within the team as last year. Even when they have more ball possession, do they still prance around like dainty divas with defensive possession, because as I remember it there wasn't much aggressive possession after the days of Holt. or am I right up the wattle as they say down here.

  • They've known this for 2 years.. ever since the West Brom defeat under CH set them on a downward spiral. I wonder, with hindsight(a wonderful thing) whether it really is a good idea to hold on to players after relegation who have been given a demoralising 40% pay cut. May be ok when the team is winning, but psychologically it's a downer when you're losing and watching the PL receding.

  • Well I'm shocked . I go into dock for some minor re-plumbing , and then take the rest of the 10 weeks soaking up some Aegean sunshine as convalescence , come back to slime island and find we've gone from Top-O-the-League and Adams the new Lambert ; to mid-table , won one from the last 10 , Adams must go . What HAVE you been up to ?

  • Every week we get the same messages: this is simply not good enough (Adams); we are playing well but must cut out the stupid mistakes (most of the senior players). Yet each week, when the chips are down, what happens? not good enough, silly mistakes....but also an awful lot more that is wrong but which either the manager and players cannot see or will not acknowledge! Phelan has a mammoth task on his hands.

How many different players have said them and the games they were said afterwards. answers to NCFC press and communications officer and maybe they can avoid the embarassment that these articles give rise too. OH, but they have been there all the time advising

  • Bogaz John is correct - also, NA is not getting results and has been given enough time to sort it out. Unsuccessfully, and unfortunately the situation reminds me of Tim Sherwood as Spurs manager - it was never going to last very long - and.........it didn't. I can see NA & Santa together - both outside in the snow at Christmas ! OTBC

  • Unfortunately the 'mistakes' such as failing to stand next to a post when defending a corner and JR flapping at the ball like a mackerel on a boat are so bad that they almost appear to be deliberate! Even my 10 year old son knows that if he's put on a post at a corner he's not to move until the ball is cleared. I think NA has lost the dressing room and they want him out. In fact, with the teams that he's been picking (until the last couple of games at least) I wouldn't blame them! IPWT

  • Same old excuses being said. JH does not put in a 90 min stint disappears for too long in the match. Cannot even take a decent corner as the ball rarely goes beyond the first defenders. JH you yourself have to do much better. Olson is another who is only going through the motions. Lafferty is a liability and is clearly not up to the standard required. No goals so far says it all although continuously being played out of position does not help. whittled too slow not good enough. What's happened to Grabban. All the centre backs we signed none are any good poor judgement by NA. Which is possibly why he persists with RAY at centre back. The side has no balance on the left which is why Murphy should be an automatic selection. We are in free fall and I cannot see it getting any better too many under performers. OTBC

  • Jaemae you're right Wigan and Huddersfield are 2 teams ( like the previous 4 we've played) whom we should easily beat with the squad we have. It's almost unbelievable for a team who have just spent 3 years in the PL to be struggling like we are. It's got to be down to motivation and attitude on the pitch. These are seriously well paid guys who are turning in shifts which if we, in the ordinary world, turned in we would be shown the door PDQ.

  • Why is it that everyone is talking about the difference that Mike Phelan will make, that remains to be seen. Hopefully he will help to improve the situation, it doesn't take away from the fact that the Manager doesn't appear to be able to set the team up with any sensible balance albeit he has one of the largest and better squads in the championship. How many more games will this be allowed to continue are we going to wait until we drift into the lower reaches of the division before some knee jerk action is taken. Be decisive, act now, make a change at the top (Tim Sherwood would be nice) and let's get our act together and move on.

Even the commentators on Radio Partridge have restricted themselves to mere euphoria when our "Stars" manage to get the ball to a "team" mate. If it hapens in the opposition half of the pitch, the pitch is pitched higher. Goreham does shout & scream a lot, though. Silly little boy. Is he a fan of Chris Evans?

The whole tenor of your game is poor. Consistently poor defending, too slow getting the ball forward on the counter, poor passing and ball retention and in general a lack of belief. In defence of the players, however, it must be admitted that the actual team set-ups, selections and substitutions are also way off beam. If only it was as simple as cutting out the mistakes....!

  • I will say there should be NO FALSE HOPE if Norwich can come out of Wigan with a win. Things are still very clearly not well, and beating ONE OF THE WORST TEAMS IN THE LEAGUE won't be something to celebrate. Same thing with Huddersfield, if you take winning those games as a turn of fortune, that will be hilarious.

If you are not up to the job, so be it!...Don't pass the ball to anyone just to get yourself out of trouble... and put another player in it!.... You and the others are chosen to play because the manager thinks you are the best men for the job...on the day!...Be positive!....Don't let him down!.....
