Canaries midfielder Jonny Howson has lost his appeal against his red card at Bournemouth last weekend.

The midfielder will serve a three-match ban - Saturday’s home game against Cardiff City, plus the game against Brentford and Birmingham City.

Howson was shown a straight red card by referee Chris Foy for a tackle on Yann Kermorgant.

In a statement, the FA said: “Norwich City’s Jonathan Howson will serve a three-match suspension with immediate effect after his claim of wrongful dismissal was rejected following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing today [Tuesday 13 January 2015].

Howson was dismissed for serious foul play during the game against AFC Bournemouth on 10 January 2015.”

  • Aaah, Gibbo. Non Nobis Domine indeed. That noise which men call fame, that dross which men call gold. I cannot begin to tell you the debt of gratitude I owe to that supreme educationalist, S.O.Hesketh. They don`t make `em like that any more. For "the likes of" him I`d willingly undergo a few hot and Godless days... Kipling wrote exceptionally good school songs! Not unto us the praise.

  • Disappointing really. On another note (but linking in with themes about consistency) I had a conversation with a Blackburn fan this morning who said that their fans were chanting for Grant hanley to be sent off against Wolves on Sunday, such a thug was he. Neither of us had ever heard of a players own fans calling for him to be sent off before.

  • I..... I take it NorwichAbs that you are not a fan of Wes Hoolahan, and picked upon every weakness that in your opinion he has!...I take a different view, and believe he is the STRONGEST contributor to our game!....Far superior to Howson in all departments with a more involved and positive approach!....They do not compliment each other, and should never play at the same time!.....Hoolahan is often crowded out of his natural mid field position by his own teammates who want to get near him....instead of maintaining their own positions!....Redmond is the worst offender!.....Howson is too often 'missing'!.....

  • For clarity, as there's many knee jerk responses on here, an appeal is not actually about 'overturning' a red card and not judging if it's wrong, right or too harsh .......... it's to ensure the suspension is 'fair'. Unfortunately Howson is on the end of one of softer red cards, but red card it was deemed to be on the day. It can't be rescinded or downgraded to a yellow. It was a red therefore 3 match ban it is.

  • No big surprise as our game moves towards non contact (apart from girly grappling at corners which seems to be encouraged). Gives someone else an opportunity Saturday. Agree re. Vadis - looks like we may have bought a dud there. Must be tough for him to come to a strange place and then not get to play. Maybe get him loaned out when fit to get some matches to see if he can deliver.

  • Serious foul play is a subjective decision particularly as to whether the tackle might injure another player. The FA will always back the ref and most appeals, like this one, are a waste of time.

  • While I can see that Howson's sloppy tackle could earn him a red (regardless of intent), this Yank must confess that he has only just realized how serious a Red Card is under the FA. A 3 game suspension! Yikes! Standard over here is one game, more for egregious cases, after review. I'll admit though, that heavy penalties like that would go a long way toward purging the hacking from North American "soccer".

  • It's a big sham what's the point of a fourth official, he should have more input other than introducing subs. and informing us of any added time. In other sports the off field official is called upon to review contentious issues and incidents and adjudicate on them, his judgement is accepted by both sides. I suppose it could be argued that it all evens itself in the end but I went to Bournemouth and the ref was a bit of a homer, we didn't get half the free kicks we deserved and were penalised too often for run of the mill tackles. I think Brew is out there trying to invoke the spirit of S.O. Hesketh to return and make The Hewett the school it was. Non Nobis Dominae.

  • @Graham Last , my comment was in no way any sort of criticism of Duncan Forbes . I think you are quite correct , I think it WAS the occasion when he got that injury . I'd simply failed to remember that was the reason City had arranged for a loan player to come here ( very rare thing back then , and Crystal Palace a First Division side , so a lot of extra people turned up to see this exotic Mr Bell ( City's average gate back then was about 6500 plus per game , and Geoffrey Watling's Jag E type was routinely parked on the cobbles on Tombland ) . Duncan Forbes was a very great player for NCFC , and it's a great sad shame that such a strong character should suffer from dementia now . All sympathy to him , and to his family .

  • A shame for us and Mr Howson but please AN ignore any clammering for Hoolahan. Powder-puff challenges, the 360 degree rotation when he has the ball to give the opposition fair warning to get back and defend, the short legs so no need to run back and defend himself, losing the ball in key areas, it goes on. We should have taken Villa's hand off when Lambert offered £5 million. Let's go for pace on the wings, feeding Jerome and Hooper.

  • the referees are given a directive around the way players tackle and whilst Howson took the ball with his right foot I always feared an appeal would fail as he did jump in with his trailing foot. The referee will say it is the dangerous manner..... not saying I agree but modern interpretation of dangerous play

  • What would Norman Hunter or Chopper Harris have done ? The only player we ever had down here who got away with stuff like that was that centre-half Bobby Bell who we scrounged on loan from Crystal Palace while Duncan Forbes was laid-up for something or other . I can still remember the whole of Carrow Road going silent in disbelief as he blatantly upended someone , and then the babble of 8,000 odd fans ( smaller attendances back then ) all asking their neighbours " Did we really just see that ? " . He was only here for 4 games I think , but left a lasting impression . Sort of cross between Christopher Walken baddy and Trevor Hockey in a bad mood .

  • This Ref averages one red card every other game for the last 20 he's reff'ed ( according to Radio Dew-yah-far-hev-a-dickey-Dew ) , questions should be asked ? Bad luck for Howson , but we have plenty of cover in midfield so 3 Saturdays in the stand for J H . No bad place to be if Alex Neil does the predictable " New Manager Syndrome " thing , i.e. win a famous victory in your first match , then promptly lose the next 4 .

  • As is always the case, you can bet your life if it had been any of the big boys it would have been a yellow at worst,if any card at all.MU at Old Trafford on Sunday committed TWO fouls by holding the shirts from corners against Southampton no penalty given in either case. I bet it would have been different at the other end. Again no consistency from officials or the FA. Or should it be *U for useless?

  • Unfortunately the F always tend to side with the Ref against smaller club and as I stated earlier in the day, I eared this would be the result. I am not sure he will be a big miss though as we would do better to play a formation whereby Hooper in effect plays in the hole just behind Jerome. We then have Tettey, O'Neil and Johnson who can all play central midfield. Likewise we still have Hoolahan who can play behind a front two if we decide to play a tighter formation.
