Norwich City’s new signing Ivo Pinto revealed he had his heart set on joining the Canaries after rejecting other offers to fulfil his Premier League dream.

The 26-year-old full-back was officially unveiled at Colney on Friday afternoon after completing his move for an undisclosed fee.

Pinto is eligible to feature in Saturday’s FA Cup tie against Manchester City but Alex Neil confirmed the former Dinamo Zagreb defender will not be considered after only one training session with his new team mates.

The ex-Portuguese Under-21 international brings Champions League experience after playing against the likes of Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Manchester United in recent seasons, but the English top flight was his big ambition.

“I am not saying this because I am here now. But, for me, it was my dream to play in the Premier League,” he said. “It is the best league in the world. Norwich have given me this chance to play here and I am very happy to come here. From the first contact I had with them, the will to have me here was very big and for me to have that opportunity to help the club achieve their goals was very important. From the first contact, I was thinking only about Norwich until everything was done. In this country I didn’t have any other official options, from other countries, yes, but since I heard about Norwich I just think about coming here.

“What can the fans expect? I am a very aggressive, fast player. They can expect from me that I will give all I have in every minute of a game and I will not disappoint them. The Champions League is the best competition in the world. I have some experience of that and at the age of 26 I have played against some of the best teams in the world and it has given me more confidence and that can help me and the team.”

Neil believes Pinto’s Champions League pedigree will help him settle in quickly.

“One of the things which helped us sign him is that he was involved in the Champions League,” said Neil. “We watched him in the flesh at Arsenal when he played against the likes of Alexis Sanchez and we watched him against Franck Ribery of Bayern Munich so we have seen him against a high calibre of opposition.

“We know his history and he was quoted as the best right back in the Croatian league last season. So, we have done our homework on him, we have covered all the bases and we are hoping he is going to come in and have a real impact. He is the perfect age and he has still got his best years ahead of him so he ticks all the boxes.”

Neil has no fresh injury concerns ahead of Manchester City’s FA Cup visit, but he is adopting a no risk strategy with Matt Jarvis who is only back in training after a knee lay-off.

“No, everybody will be fit. Matt Jarvis is probably not quite ready,” said Neil. “It is more the fact we are not taking a risk with him. He has trained this week but we have waited nine or ten weeks to get him fit so we don’t want him to breakdown at the final hurdle. It is more precautionary with two Premier League games coming up next week.”

  • I don't believe that Marshall would come here to sit on the bench and I don't see how we could drop Rudd to make Marshall our new No1. Keeping two good keepers happy is never easy. Good post Putney and got the RB thing first time so you needn't have worried. We're not a big enough club to keep £8M of assets and a large pay cheque sitting in the stands so I don't believe the bid either. We have all been worried about the RB position even last year so Pinto hasn't come a day too soon. Hope we have a few more in and outs before Feb 1st though as being fast out of the traps doesn't appear to have happened as I had hoped. INWT

  • Sounds like a good signing. Comes across as capable but there for the team. On selling Ruddy for 3.5M - sounds low as Cardiff have put a price of 10M on Marshall that they got from us for 0.5M.

  • Excellent post PutneyCanary .I was a tad bemused by the Arab comment thank you clearing that up,as for Mr Grabban I would take the money and run .He might bite us on the bum but spend well with themoney and hopefully we will be clear of them. Here's believing .COYY.

  • So, this is my take on a number of recent stories. This one first: good signing. Seen the videos and watched the game against the Gunners. He looks to me like a quick attacking full back. Almost like a wing back. Also a bit of a throw back. Seems to like to stay on the outside and whip in crosses, rather than the current trend of cutting in and shooting (Glen Johnson, even Redmond). That may explain why he never scores. I think he could be a crucial link to supply Mbokani. Time will tell, but I guess that's what AN has in mind. Seems defensively sound too - may be found out a bit in terms of his positional ability defensively at first, but at least he's got the pace to recover (which has been lacking at Arab for a long time for us). On the others: I don't rate Grabban as much more than a decent Championship striker. So if there really is an 8m offer (I suspect there wasn't) then I'd take it. We'll see - my guess is he will be gone by the end of the window for around about that amount or a little less. On Ruddy: I'd wait until the summer to sell. We don't need 3.5m for him now. That said, I did see a rumour (not here) that were in for Steve Mandana (spl?). SAM (see BBBc sport website) has him worth an extra 2 points between now and end of the season for us. Could be crucial. So if we signed him, I would see no issue with Ruddy leaving (even at what seems quite a low price). Certainly I can't see us selling Ruddy without signing a new keeper - especially with Kean now out on loan. But Rudd seems like he's really stepped up, so my heart says stick with him (and therefore leave Ruddy as cover). Re Rudd - and to paraphrase our last really good manager, he seems like a 'right good player'.

  • Pinto looks a really good signing and we have been weak in this position for a long time. I don't understand the logic though of refusing £8M for Grabban when it looks as though Bournemouth may just buy Afobe instead ?! And we still need a centre back cos Russell Martin just isn't even a good back up.

  • We have moaned long and hard about the need for a right back and at last we have one with a nice Beckhamesque smile who will look splendid in photos as he is first to leap on the back of our goalscorers. Pity Lord Besty has to denigrate Ivo's jacket which is a dead ringer for my fave brown leather winter warmer and I hope there will be less flippancy in future if we continue to sign experienced Champion League stars.

  • elmboy, I hope your assessment is wrong, but fear it is not. We do need a quality CB. That said, Russ is a better CB than Whitts is a RB! And we should be able to avoid playing them at the same time. I still have nightmares, in Black & White, about that Newcastle game.
