Wroxham manager Jordan Southgate pulled out a pre-kick off coup when he named his starting XI – and it paid immediate dividends.

Wearing the familiar number nine shirt on his debut for the Yachtsmen was Norwich City legend, Grant Holt.

The 37-year-old former three-time Canaries player of the season, was appearing in the second round of the Norfolk Senior Cup against Fakenham Town.

A good friend of assistant manager Adam Drury and midfielder Simon Lappin from their time at Carrow Road, Holt’s appearance was something of a surprise for the crowd of 89.

But it didn’t take Holt long to get his first goal in Wroxham colours – and it was one straight from the training pitch at Colney. A corner from Simon Lappin was cleared back to the midfielder, who swung in a teasing cross and Holt was able to rise above his defender to nod the ball down and into the net.

The goal came late in the second half and was enough to seal the win 2-0, with Wroxham having taken a first-half lead through Jordan Bond whose shot from the centre of the penalty area was spilled under his body by Fakenham ‘keeper Tom Coombe.

It could have been a former Canaries one-two in the first half as a penalty taken by Simon Lappin struck the bar after the dangerous Bond had been fouled on the edge of the area.

It wasn’t one-way traffic and Connor Milligan in the Wroxham goal had to push a rasping shot away for a corner to preserve the lead and a clean sheet in the second half.

Elsewhere, 16-year-old Luke Middleton celebrated his full Norwich United debut by scoring the two goals that saw the holders begin their defence of the Norfolk Senior Cup with a 2-0 win over Mundford.

Middleton broke the deadlock after just six minutes heading home a Jordan Forbes cross from the right, but any thoughts of the Planters romping to victory were soon dispelled against a resilient Stags side.

Harry Barker shot over and Middleton put a half chance wide for the hosts and just before the break Paulo Martims hit his shot into the side netting for the visitors. The Stags Callum Benham headed straight at Luke Pearson at the far post just after the break

Middleton settled any fears eight minutes from time heading home his second from Linton Garrod’s right wing cross.

Two goals from Volta Rocha were enough for Thetford to claim a 2-0 win at Anglian Combination Division One side East Harling,

Gorleston had already secured their passage after a 4-0 demolition of neighbours Great Yarmouth Town on Friday night in front of 330 supporters. Mitch McKay scored a brace with the returning Connor Ingram and Peter Lambert also on the scoresheet.

Diss Town moved into the last 16, beating Anglian Combination Hindringham 3-0.

Virgilio Leitao floated the opening goal over the goalkeeper in the 48th minute. Nuno Nogueira made it 2-0 from an acute angle in the 74th minute. Charlie Lambe completed the scoring five minutes from time from close range.

Swaffham had a good 3-1 win at First Division promotion rivals Mulbarton Wanderers. Joe Jackson (2) and Matthew Gilchrist secured the win before Jack Simpson got a consolation five minutes from time.
