Gary Rowett and Mark Warburton did not fit the bill for Norwich City’s top brass

Ed Balls is convinced Norwich City’s board is right not to make a panic appointment to replace Alex Neil.

Both Mark Warburton and Gary Rowett have since been snapped up by Championship rivals Nottingham Forest and Derby respectively, but the Canaries’ hierarchy reiterated on Saturday they want a sporting director in place before appointing a head coach.

Alan Irvine is now poised to continue in temporary charge after completing his initial two-match brief with a 2-0 Championship win over Barnsley.

“To have gone in quickly for an old-style manager would have been an upside down way of doing this and wouldn’t work,” said the City chairman. “We said after we terminated Alex’s contract we would announce a new structure and we have done so. No doubt some fans would have been frustrated why we were not in immediately for a new manager. That is not the approach we have decided to take. We really want to get the football side and recruitment side strengthened, and the head coach is part of that.

“We concluded from January onwards, having spoken to a lot of people inside the game, the old style of having a manager in charge of everything is no longer going to work for us.”

Balls rejected any suggestion the new organisational structure could lead to confusion, with the traditional chief executive post now split between Steve Stone as managing director and the incoming sporting director. Ricky Martin and Richard Money will report in to the new sporting director, who will work closely with the head coach.

“Steve will run the non-football side, a sporting director will plan and embed our values and a head coach will come in and try to win games every week and be part of that strategy, but not in charge of the whole thing because that is an impossible job,” said Balls. “The managing director will report to the board on all business matters. We need them to efficient and bring in revenue. Then on the football side the sporting director will report in on all football matters. In truth, before you had one person doing that role, with Alex Neil reporting directly to David McNally and then Jez Moxey. Now we have split that out and there is further division within the football side. That has not been clear enough in the past and we aim to address that with this new structure.

“Traditionally, we have had a chief executive for years who has run everything. Increasingly that is a hard thing to do when you have a large business side to a football club of our size and also where the recruitment side is so complex and global, where you have to plan your academy and recruitment in a strategic, long term way. I don’t think we have done that enough over recent times.”

  • Canary west. You have my support , the troll is back , but his childish abuse shouldn't stop us posting serious comment on our club . I think we entering a critical period in the future of Norwich City & the spin coming from upstairs doesn't bode well or fill me with confidence. The manager situation should have been sorted after relegation, the CEO saga has been a complete farce as has the transfer policy of 4 consecutive windows & only now after a disappointing season have the powers that be decided they need to do something. Problem is , that process is also turning into a farce. Wouldn't surprise me if it dragged on until the end of the season & or we finish up with Irvine & a Martin or 2.

  • Mattt31 who cares? If anyone just made themselves look a tool its you. Comment on the article or NCFC, not choice of spelling. If he is British, American or even Chinese, who cares as long as he is an NCFC supporter.

  • This all sounds unnecessarily complicated to me. Why, all of a sudden, is having a manager no longer the right thing for NCFC? Ed says that, “We concluded from January onwards, having spoken to a lot of people inside the game, the old style of having a manager in charge of everything is no longer going to work for us.” Why exactly? It's been working just fine over the past few years when we've been getting promotion on a regular basis, (usually quickly followed by relegation, but hey ho). What has changed so drastically in the past few months? And why, if they realised it wasn't working in January, did they wait until March to get shot of AN?

  • My bet that those two would not want to come here and work under such constraints. Who would? As a person in charge of the team, and has NO say in what players come in, but totally responsible for the results. It's working with one arm tied behind you back. But having having said that AN recruitment policy wasted millions. Players bought by him and sold by him, those who do not even make the bench. One chased for over a year, has wasted £7-8m. A club of our size cannot afford to waste money on such an epic scale.

  • More waffling excuses from the ex politico windbag. Fact is that as usual with City board members, his announcement was late, and they're "taking their time". That's City board speak for they can't find anyone wanting desperately enough to come and struggle to persuade them to agree to do what's needed to successfully manage the football side of the businessman

  • Me thinks ...Ed is talking 'balls'...now the favourites have been snatched by other clubs...excuses have to be made for what will be 2nd, 3rd or 4rth choice of a manager, coach or whatever you want to name it..all the fans want is just SOMEONE who knows what they're doing, SOMEONE who can guide the players in the right direction, SOMEONE who the players respect and listen to and SOMEONE who CARES about our club and the direction we need to be looking at!! Just SOMEONE WHO CARES!!

  • Spot on Barking, I fully expect Irvine to get the job now, after all they would have scoured the world? Any company who worked like this would be bankrupt with their dithering, anybody who expected an announcement of change within this club, forget it! This BOD have just changed the job titles, all they will do like most senior management do, have a meeting, then have a meeting about having a meeting, result zero productivity.

  • This is total BS. A good CEO can run a small outfit like NCFC really well, and still have plenty of time for a familysocial life if he is allowed to put good people in place under him. One of those needs to be a manager who really knows the football side - can drive the coaching, see the weaknesses on Saturday and get them corrected during the week, can see what key positions need improving and direct the scouting staff accordingly, etc etc. The problem is at NCFC we have a load of people like Ed Balls, Delia Smith, and other BOD members who don't know a thing about football, or running a successful business. What we are being fed now is MBA idealism, and NCFC cannot afford it.

  • Anyone would think Balls had invented the wheel all on his own. Having a Director of a Football and a Head Coach working alongside each other is not exactly new. But Balls has decided to label the former "Sporting Director" to make it sound like an original idea. Whether the new structure actually works is entirely down to whether the respective strategies and personalities of the two individuals appointed are compatible. I don't really care which one is appointed first, just as long as the two of them can work together. I DO care how long it takes the Board to do anything. If it takes another two weeks to appoint a D.O.F. and another two weeks after that to appoint a coach, the season will be over and the new personnel will not have a chance to see the current team playing competitively and work out who needs to go and who is worth keeping in order to make a fist of it next season. Come on Balls, stop prancing around on television and pull your finger out.
