Declan Rudd is getting better with each Norwich City outing for Alex Neil.

The 24-year-old kept the first Premier League clean sheet of his career in the 2-0 win over Aston Villa to continue his impressive form since replacing John Ruddy.

“He has done very well. He showed signs of that in the cup games,” said Neil. “I think he played three before he got his chance in the league and performed really well in each of them and he is getting better with each game. Goalkeeper is not a position you would change that often and now Declan has got his opportunity and shown up well that is credit to him because he has waited a long time for his chance. The most important thing is we win games, regardless of whether it is 2-1, or 2-0, but it certainly gives confidence to the back four. It is like anything else.

“There have been inconsistencies in performances all season – from a team and individual perspective – so if we can level that out we will have more opportunities to win points.”

Neil must decide whether to shuffle his pack again for the final game of a congested festive period. Andre Wisdom comes into the mix after his hamstring injury but Matt Jarvis is still only in light training following his knee lay-off.

“Matt has not done a whole day with the players yet, he has mainly been training on his own. Hopefully if everything goes to plan maybe another week,” said Neil. “There will always be signs of tiredness, particularly when you play twice in three days at this level, like we did this week. That puts extra demands on the body but we rotated a few and that means the squad is fresh.”

  • John, I agree he might have been selected earlier, but I don't think Ruddy cost us 9 points, as your post suggests? Nearer 5 IMHO, and Ryan B has been every bit as much an improvement, if not more so.

  • Neil biggest mistake was not putting Declan in goal earlier in the season, after all it was obvious, if he had we would now be upper mid-table.

  • Safe journey for all those having to travel after the festive period! I anticipate Olsson and O'Neil returning, with Dorrans and either Howson or Redmond back to the bench? Assuming Wes has the energy left to play; he is so critical to creating chances. Southampton wont roll-over, so will be a tough game.

  • Cheers el dingo bogas john. Was too late for villa tickets so will be our only Xmas game. Dingo, at Lille will be about an hour and a bit from home. Nervous about the result. They should have been out of sight at West Ham by half time apparently but were nervy second half. Anything possible and first goal critical.

  • I walk about 2.5 miles home (too mean to pay for a crowded bus). I wouldn't swap with you DJ_F - I've driven to Lille after a game and it nearly wiped me out! Safe journey.

  • I think a bit of revenge due here after our dismal showing at their place. I must say having Declan in goal has given our defence some solidarity so yes a big game today and, as Big Sam reckons, our first step to the 18 points we need for safety. Bon voyage DJF!! ( et bon retour)

  • No reason why Declan cannot be a top top city keeper. Before the Saints win against ar$enal they were on a terrible run and now only a handful of points ahead of us. Given they are one of teams we are supposed to be emulating we're not far behind. Every home match is huge. Looking forward to it but not the drive back to brussels afterwards.

  • Declan is already proving to be one of the stand-out successes of the season so far. He had to wait far too long for his chance and am delighted he has taken it. No disrespect to Ruddy, but Declan is more athletic, more decisive and shows good judgement - when he comes out he has often done so successfully, taking ball rather than man. I feel that if we can bring in another good central defender his confidence will grow even further. Hard game today but then again they are all hard at this level!

  • Agreed Dubai Southampton are a top ten side imop despite their recent bad run. So we need a good performance all round. I will be interested to see the team today.

  • It will be a very good start to the year if we can get 3 Points against Southampton today. It is going to take a great performance to win but here is hoping we turn up with our 'A Game' today ! OTBC
