Standing up to cheer on your beloved football team at home seems like a natural thing to do for the most fans.
Sadly though, things don’t appear to be quite that simple at Carrow Road.
Norwich City is today taking a lot of flak off fans after sending them a letter warning that “persistent standing” could be causing a health and safety risk.
It even said season ticket holders could be shown the red card from the Barclay stand.
The criticism may not be entirely fair on the Canaries - the order has come from a body of representatives including the county council and emergency services, which the club has to comply with or face losing its safety certificate.
The effect though is the same - fans who behave sensibly feeling like they are being told to “sit down and shut up”, because of the actions of those less responsible.
While the simple act of standing may not seem a huge health and safety risk, if someone falls from a seat it can cause serious injury.
We should welcome the fact that people out there want to make sure that people can enjoy the beautiful game in safety.
Clearly though, there needs to be a balance - after all, it is possible to be so health and safety conscious that it removes the fun and joy that attracts people in the first place.
That is what supporters are most concerned about, so let’s hope the right balance can be struck.
Let’s also hope Norwich put some goals past Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday - otherwise fans may not be standing up to cheer in the first place!
