Daniel Farke aims to get Grant Hanley in tip top shape this summer to lead Norwich City’s Championship charge.

Hanley has been suffering with shin splints in recent weeks, after becoming an ever-present at Carrow Road, that forced him to cut short his international stint with Scotland.

The 26-year-old then sat out the Good Friday 2-0 defeat to Fulham with migraines.

Hanley is back in contention for Monday’s trip to QPR, and Farke is quick to allay fears the defender’s fitness concerns could check his impressive progress.

“Listen, he is still a young player.

“Also as a centre back you don’t have to run perhaps as much as other areas of the pitch. You must win your duels and be strong in that way,” he said.

“Yes, it is true shin splints can be a problem in mid to longer term.

“Sometimes he has felt pain and when there is a period with a lot of load it can be a bit complicated.

“This has been on-going for some weeks.

“I was glad he returned early from the Scotland squad, but then the night before (Fulham) he had some problems with migraines.

“He came to me in the morning and said he could play but he would not be totally comfortable. He had a lot of headaches.

“We tried some tablets but he was not there 100pc.”

City’s medical team will devise a special close season plan for Hanley.

“In general, we have a big summer break and that will be a period we can look to sort this out,” said Farke.

“Grant is a big tough boy and in the next few games he can stand the load and play with some pain. He would play without a head on his shoulders.

“We have to use the summer break not just for holidays.

“They will all have individual plans and he will be the same.

“First it will be about recovery and then working on these problems. This is more a topic for the sport science guys but you have to strengthen the calves, some special treatments and so on.

“It won’t be for Grant that he can lie seven weeks on the beach and drink some cocktails.

“It is important to rest but you must be professional. We can sort this out.”
