Alex Neil brought Matt Jarvis to Norwich City because the West Ham loanee had a point to prove.

Jarvis capped a vibrant Premier League debut for the club with a goal in the 3-1 win over Bournemouth, after arriving at Carrow Road in the final throes of the summer transfer window.

Neil believes the 29-year-old can have a major impact this season, having escaped his Hammers’ hell.

“I had a good chat with him before he came here and what I need is hungry players who have a point to prove. There is no use coming here to pick up their last pay cheque because that is no good to me,” said the City chief. “We are going to be a hungry group who are going to fight for every point. The disappointment of the group getting relegated and then the excitement of promotion last season tells you they know how much it means for them to be here and they want to take full advantage of that.

“At the moment it is just a loan deal. We’ll see how he does and he can have a look at us and we’ll take it from there. There is more to come because he has not played regular football, although he had five pre-season games and then was a bit of a bit-part player so he has not played a lot recently.”

Jarvis impressed alongside Robbie Brady down the left against Bournemouth, but Neil is not afraid to tweak a winning line up for Sunday’s league trip to Liverpool.

“I’ll need to study it. My line up gets based on what I see during the early part of the week. I am not afraid to change a winning team because every game is treated on its merit,” he said. “We are pleased with what we have done so far but we have a very difficult game at Liverpool and we will do our best to ensure we are fully prepared.”

  • Come on Spanish you'd miss sitting with your mates. If I had a box I can imagine how many hangers on there would be. Barclay till I die. And with all those stairs to climb to the UB it could be just a matter of time!

  • Perhaps AN is referring to players like Shaun Wright-Phillips and Leroy Fer at QPR to name just 2 who went for the money. Ok, so MJ is reputedly earning £42k pr wk. GH is earning £32k pw to sit on the bench. There's another I could add to that money grabbing bracket. If he wanted to play he would have moved to SheffWeds, but no, he wanted a VIP Box for the family, which would have earned the club £32K per season...Me thinks he could have paid for that out of his wages.

  • I agree Foggo up to a point. Football is mostly all about money. However I can understand AN wanting players who wish to do well for themselves and the club and not just players who just go through the motions.

  • Nothing wrong with being business-like BOF. What AN is saying to Jarvis and anyone else who has come in, or may want to come, is, show me the passion, desire and ability then we can negotiate further. I firmly believe that our perceived lack of activity in the transfer window had much to do AN not prepared to pay inflated wages to prima donnas.

  • Hilarious . THE WHOLE FOOTBALL PLAYING AND MANAGEMENT BUSINESS IS ABOUT MONEY-GRABBING . As for Jarvis , I hope he does well here , but if he DOES , then his price will rise accordingly . Not a sensible financial strategy .
