Alex Neil is convinced there is cut-throat competition in Norwich City’s squad for the final Premier League push after a hectic transfer window.

The Canaries have brought in four new signings and completed a permanent deal for Matt Jarvis ahead of Monday’s 11pm deadline as Neil looks to equip Norwich for the survival battle.

“If you are a player and a new signing comes in I think there are two schools of thought. You either go, ‘Oh no, my position could be in jeopardy’ or the others think, ‘Good, we have another good player in the building to help us succeed’ so there will be mixed emotions,” he said.

“We don’t want to bring in players in a similar mould to what we have got. We are looking to stretch it and attract an even better calibre of player. We are happy with the business we have done but the proof will be on what happens between now and the end of the season.

“We got some finance in and that allowed us to do what we wanted and bring in who we feel is going to contribute to the starting XI.”

Swiss international Timm Klose arrived last week from Champions League hopefuls Wolfsburg to signal Norwich’s intent to earn another season of Premier League football.

“Hopefully we can go again in the summer window to try and keep building the squad, but we have a lot of work to do before then,” said Neil.

“He can do a job either side in central defence. The fact he is right-footed means he can play that side, because he is more natural, but also the fact he has occupied the left for the majority of his career gives us great flexibility.

“That is something I look for in a number of the players I sign. Robbie Brady is the same, he can play wide or left-back, Steven Naismith can play a whole host of positions.”

  • Trouble is we're averaging almost 2 goals conceded per game with him (Russ). I confess there was just a teeny touch of reductio ad absurdum in my Turner suggestion.

  • Even Martin is better than Turner. Doubt we'll ever see him in a city shirt again. I definitely don't see any more defensive additions. We've just spent about 8m on a CB and he's not played yet. May be worth waiting to see the effect he has. I suspect his likely partner will be Bassong and I think Bassong still has it in him to be a decent mid-Prem quality CB, if he has the right partner. Let's hope that's Klose. Re cover - given that we have no more cup games, we only have 15 games left this season. I think that 4 CBs for 2 positions is sufficient for that, even with Martin as the fourth. After all, he's played most games this season and we're averaging a point a game with him. If Klose is as good as I think he is - and assuming he stays fit through to the end of the season, I still think 17th is where we'll finish (with Villa, Sunderland and Bournemouth going down).

  • Well, Wac, Tuesday's team selection may give us a clue. I suppose, if we're short of CBs, we could bring Turner back from loan? Or is he injured? I know he's not everybody's favourite and has his Ginger Pele moments, but better than nothing?

  • Four players for two positions may sound like sufficient competition for places but unfortunately not when one of them is Martin. Bassong is also looking like he needs a rest and we don't know what the relationship is between Ryan Bennet and Alex Neil.

  • I think we will just have to wait until the transfer window closes to really see what other business gets completed by AN and the City board. There are so many rumours at the moment and a lot of smoke screens; who says what is actually going on behind the scenes. Mame Diouf has come on as a substitute for Stoke at Palace; and we were rumoured to be very close to signing him. Its a case of watch this space. There maybe yet a CB coming our way who knows!! otbc

  • Don't worry all. If we get injuries and need cover NCFC can get a street team together and round up some members of the public who want to put a shift in. Hell, I've already forwarded my number with my availability. Given the level of performance the last few games anyone's better than Martin - who gets paid more than my annual salary per year in a week to ensure that his passes are crisp and at the correct velocity.

  • …..Most urgently the club needs to get 2 people in to change things from a weak defence who think they can do better as forwards, and forwards who haven't a snowballs chance in hell with the support they are getting!….Who?…. Well Grant Holt maybe available and Huckerby probably is!….If you wanted to go the whole hog….a quick swap from one Neil, back to another !…..

  • In general it is true we have cover but there is two points here: first the quality of the cover and secondly (and to some extent part of the first) do we have the CB cover we need? The problem is we have been using at least two players who, while no doubt honest professionals, do not measure up to PL standards. AN also has get his midfield and wide men contributing much more especially in defensive duties. If necessary he has to be ruthless in ensuring this aim is realised, dropping players who will not put in the required effort and commitment. On the positive side, Naismith is a great acquisition both and a player and a leader and that showed in no small measure last weekend. I hope Klose will also add strength and quality.

  • If we haven't got anyone close to signing by now then it won't happen. Look how long it took to sign Naismith and Klose. A medical at our club requires the player to have an open bus tour of the city, at least one day on the broads and a thorough discussion on the pedestrianisation of Norwich city center (yes I went Partridge). Additionally, we know the club will outright refuse to pay over the top for last minute panic buys.
