Alex Tettey fears his season is over, after injuring his ankle in Norwich City's midweek Premier League defeat to Chelsea.

The Norwegian midfielder was substituted in the first half of the 2-1 loss at Carrow Road on Tuesday night, after getting tangled in a tackle – and was immediately taken to hospital for a precautionary X-ray.

According to Tettey, they came back clear – but an MRI scan on Wednesday afternoon will confirm the extent of any ligament damage.

If that news isn't good, the 29-year-old fears surgery to heal the injury – and a lay-off that could mean the end of his season.

'I was at the hospital after the game on Tuesday, and I hadn't broken any bones, which is good,' Tettey told Norway's VG Sporten.

'But I'm going for another check-up, an MRI later on Wednesday. If the ligament in my ankle is ruined then I fear I'll need an operation.

'If that's the case then my season is probably finished. The next check-up will be interesting.'

The injury worries are mounting for City boss Alex Neil, off the back of a eight-game winless league run and ahead of a crucial trip to relegation rivals Swansea on Saturday.

Tuesday's defeat also saw a nasty gash to Gary O'Neil's head from an aerial clash that also cost Robbie Brady two of his teeth and a chip in a third.

Centre-back Timm Klose also limped through the latter stages of the game, while Steven Naismith and Sebastien Bassong were not fit enough to be involved.
