Alex Neil insists Norwich City’s squad is playing for their futures.

The Canaries unveiled their new manager on Friday after a whirlwind few days for the 33-year-old former Hamilton Academical’s chief.

Neil is poised for a watching brief in Saturday’s Championship trip to leaders Bournemouth but the Scot has already started his assessment of the talent at his disposal.

The City manager knows he has to act swiftly with the transfer deadline less than a month away to bring in fresh blood and retain the likes of Nathan Redmond and Gary Hooper, who have been touted with January exits. Neil is offering no guarantees to his current squad they will be part of his regime at Carrow Road.

“It is difficult to say at the moment. We have some hugely talented players here but I will be assessing the squad over the coming weeks,” he said. “The last thing you want to do is give your best players away. We’ll see what happens between now and January. We’ll try and do a lot of work between now and then to see where we go regarding the squad.

“It will be an intense period before January window closes. It’s a limited period to make decisions but I will look to tap into the experience of the guys who have been here.”

Neil has forged his reputation on developing raw talent but the Football League’s second youngest boss is not planning a major raid on his old club.

“That has not even crossed my mind to be fair,” he said. “Hamilton have a fantastic youth set-up and great young players in their squad but the first thing I need to do is assess the Norwich City squad and then if I feel there are any areas to improve on I will speak to David (McNally) and see what we can do.”
