Watford chief Beppe Sannino admitted the Hornets had gifted Norwich City three Championship points after Joel Ekstrand’s early red card.

The Italian refused to single out his Swedish defender until he had studied footage of the third-minute flashpoint which left Nathan Redmond sprawled on the pitch with blood pouring from a facial wound. But Sannino was upset at the compliant nature of Watford’s resistance following his exit.

“The decision after a few minutes changes the match for us. It happened very quickly, but the referee made a big and brave decision. For us it was harsh,” he said, speaking through his interpreter. “I didn’t see it at the time. Now with serenity I will watch it and speak with Ekstrand. This match is finished, I am thinking about the next match. I believe that even with one man less that you should play with more anger and be more compact. Norwich played a good match, but we helped them.

“Playing with one man less is difficult. I look at my players and would have liked a bit more aggression. Norwich are a good team and took their chances well. They deserved to win. They moved the ball well but I think a game with 11 versus 11 would be a different match. I don’t think we would concede three goals with 11 men on the pitch.”

Sannino urged his players to respond to Watford’s first defeat of the new season when they travel to newly-promoted Rotherham tomorrow, with the Millers buoyant from a late league win over Wolves at the weekend.

“I think we can go back to the training ground at Watford and start looking towards the next match. Now we must forget this one situation,” he said. “We have to be ready for our next situation against Rotherham. In this game we had a big, noisy support from Watford and we have to start working again to make sure we get a win on Tuesday for our fans.”

  • The photo above clearly shows that poor old Beppe, in his excitement has had a surprise faecal event. Of the players behind him, one has a splash in his eye, one is trying not to laugh and one is observing the stain with some interest while protecting himself from the smell.

  • Goldenboy 60, I take your point that the sending off spoiled a potentially good contest. In the circumstances your guys did well and providing you finish below us, I wish you well in all but one of your remaining matches. Thank you for sharing your opinion with us.

  • cutty; we need the return of Barking Wise. Odd that Archie encourages `the likes of" Steady On`s abusive output, but a humorous fellow like BW is banned. Tells you something about Archant.

  • Elton John did do an `Album` (LP) about 10 years ago, called "Peachtree Road". The single from the album was "Turn the lights out when you leave". It would be churlish to use that against our visiting poster, Goldenboy, but it could be adapted for the Donkeyboys. "Portaloo Road". Single: "No need to turn the lights out; we`ve been cut off".

  • Isn`t Igno Rance in charge of setting up the SLOBS? Let`s be `avin` ya, Igno! I volunteered to take care of the Magic Sponge-Bowkett & the half-time beer. But you, Igno, are our leader. IIIT!! Kudos to Goldenboy for staying friendly!! ;-)

  • And Randy, not sure I welcome your interest with a name like that, but since you ask. Over the last 60 plus years I've played 'left back', 'right outside', and '12th man', but I recently signed on as midfield general for the SLOBS. But I shall continue with my support for the Canaries as did my mom and dad 'right back' to the old Nest days.

  • On a previous board I did say that Watford didn't roll over and die. Going down to 10 men means packing the defence and still we scored 3 goals, that's a measure of our determination not your teams weakness G60, get over it. And I make no apologies for saying 'we'.

  • I am just saying to the lot of you, get real it wasn't a contest from the 2nd minute. I know you are excited with your first win and don't begrudge that. I didn't say it wasn't a sending off either, just that from the TV highlights you couldn't see it at all. I didn't say Redmonds nose wasn't bleeding either. They are facts. But also the facts are that we would beat you at the Vic if you were down to 10 men 2 minutes into the game. What I am saying is don't get overly excited because you have beaten us in these circumstances. And why do you have to get so personal with Udinese. It's ok for Man City and everyone else to get players in but not us? You got relegated. You are in the Championship which in many ways is more difficult than finishing 17th in the Premier, so get real and don't go overboard, it is still very early.

  • Is Elton John still a director of this lot ? Perhaps he could compose something suitably wistful . The players on the benches behind Beppe are having obvious difficulty in containing their indifference , not good when the manager is a joke , is it ? I wonder if Beppe is from Aosta ?

  • Believe it or not, Goldenboy60, there are many Norwich fans well aware that we played against 10 men. Such thoughts are witnessed by comments on other message threads. Yes, Randy, like cutty I used "we" and, also like cutty, I did not play. The use of "we" may be an indicator that both of us are Naaridge supporters. Is all. Sorry it is problematical to you.

  • To all of your comments, just think about this: 1. I understand your desperation and joy to win the game given the circumstances of being without a win for so long. 2. Bepe wouldn't have seen the incident because Ekstrand would have been in the way of him seeing whatever occurred from the dug out. Remember Redmond is quite small and probably only came up to Ekstrands shoulder anyhow. 3. On the clips shown on television I couldn't see what happened. Bepe needs to get better footage and am sure he will deal with Ekstrand if he needs to. 4. I think it is quite predictable that if you play against a team with 10 men for 88 minutes + 3 minutes of added time that the team with 11 is quite likely to win. Let's be fair you couldn't cope with Wolves last week when down to 10 men, and you played a lot less time than we did with 10. 5. So you should all calm down and not get over excited. Yes it was a good win for you but given the circumstances and turning it on its head you would have given the 'we only had 10 men' bit. 6. So get real and take the game for what it was. Certainly not an even contest given the earliness of Ekstrands departure.
