Neil Adams’ squad smashed four goals in eight minutes during the first period of extra-time to advance in their first outing since a memorable triumph against Chelsea’s young guns in last season’s final.

Carlton Morris cancelled out Jack Ryan’s early opener for North End but neither side were able to make another decisive breakthrough in normal time until the Canaries cut loose with Harrison Heath, Rhys Browne, Jamie Eaton-Collins and Morris putting the tie beyond doubt in a devastating burst before Ray Grant sealed the win.

City fielded five of the squad who helped secure the club’s first FA Youth Cup trophy in 30 years with full-back Cameron Norman captaining the side.

Lewis Byrne-Hewitt tested Ross Dalton in an early sighter from Adams’ side but Preston rocked the visitors back in the 12th minute when Ryan controlled Bradley Roscoe’s pass to coolly lift over the stranded Ben Killip.

The powerful Morris levelled four minutes later when he attacked Norman’s corner to glance into the roof of the net. Ryan had a goal disallowed after straying into an offside position just before the half-hour mark but there was little trace of any inferiority complex from the League One club.

Heath replaced Byrne-Hewitt for the holders on the hour mark with the tie delicately poised but City tried to up the ante in the final quarter with Eaton-Collins testing Dalton after Rhys Browne had led a sharp counter down the Canaries’ left.

The lively Browne then rolled a strike wide before City survived a strong home penalty appeal in the closing stages when Ryan went down inside the Norwich box.

Any prospect of a nervy penalty shoot-out to decide the tie receded swiftly in the early minutes of extra-time with Heath opening the floodgates with a close range finish after Browne’s initial strike was blocked from Eaton-Collins’ cross. Browne was rewarded for an impressive shift when he drilled home after Morris’ header had struck Nick Anderton.

City ruthlessly killed off the tie when Eaton-Collins despatched Norman’s pinpoint cross before the Canaries’ skipper teed up Morris to seal his brace and Grant’s sweet 20-yard strike completed the rout.

  • Really pleased for the lads they are a great group and will go far again I'm sure. Not sure how you can use this as a stick to beat Chris Hughton with Melvyn, not sure what he's supposed to "take note" of. Do you want us to be 1-1 after 90 minutes? do you want us playing Preston?

  • Well done lads , start as you mean to go on . Is it just me or does the shirt look better without a sponsor ?

  • Yes I think the shirts look better with out the sponsors name on it. Worse thing they ever done was to introduce sponsor names on shirts, it was the start of the decline of football as we know it, not a sport more of a business. It is good to see the youth players making a fight of things, not being afraid of playing more than one game a week. A lesson for the overpaid seniors
