Ryan Bennett admitted this season has had its personal frustrations, but the young centre-back is confident Norwich City will see themselves to safety come May – and that he will have helped play a big part in the Canaries’ journey.
The 23-year-old made his 10th start of the campaign in the FA Cup draw with Fulham on Saturday, and looks destined to beat last term’s tally of 15 on his second full season in the top flight.
Bennett still appears definitively behind Sebastien Bassong and Michael Turner in Chris Hughton’s defensive pecking order, although the latter’s hamstring injury sustained at Crystal Palace on New Year’s Day may offer Bennett the chance to enjoy a more prolonged run in City’s starting XI.
“Obviously those two are first choice and that is something I’ve grown to understand,” said Bennett. “It’s hard sometimes sitting on the sidelines, coming in to play the one game and not doing too bad, and then coming out again. So it’s quite frustrating but it’s just what you’ve got to do in football and I will carry on keeping my head down and hopefully play some games now.”
A tough trip to Everton awaits the Canaries on Saturday, as they look to avoid following last season’s post-Christmas winless trend.
With fewer points already on the board this time around, their Premier League survival arguably depends on it.
“We had a few more points this time last year and I think our form from now until the end of last season wasn’t great – and we know that,” added Bennett.
“But we have got games coming up now every month that we can win, and that’s something we’re going to have to do to stay in the league.
“I think everyone in the dressing room is in a positive mood, and we can easily do it.
“You’ve got to be positive in every game. Obviously Everton have been in good form this year, they’ve only lost two games, so it will be a hard place to go to.
“But hopefully we can go there and put in a positive and good performance, like we did against Fulham on Saturday, and beat them.”
