Arguably, now is not the time to start mentioning former Norwich City managers – but given the almost entire breakdown of relations at Carrow Road on Saturday, it’s hard not to.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The Canaries’ rise through three-quarters of English football’s tiers was built on the bond between players and fans. But with Russell Martin and John Ruddy both having to deal with abuse directed at them from supporters at close quarters – plus the added acrimony of flying clap-banners, the most vocal calls yet for manager Chris Hughton to be sacked and repeated booing – that bond snapped.

With City’s Premier League status looking more in danger than at any time since their top-flight return, the big question is how long it will take to repair; seven days appears an optimistic answer.

“I can understand the frustrations of where we are in the league, but this time more than ever we need everyone behind us,” said Martin.

“We got booed off at half-time – everyone is entitled to their opinion. We got booed off at the end. Someone said a few things to me, which I am not happy about and I will be speaking to someone about that.

“This is a time to stick together more than ever, and I spoke this week about how good the fans are here – and they are. But this was disappointing. We are as disappointed as anyone in this stadium. It means as much to myself, to John (Ruddy), people who have been here a long time and played a lot of games for this club and we need them more than ever.

“They need to get behind us, it’s as simple as that, regardless of how you about the management, the players, whatever. As a football club, we need to get to get behind the team.”

As for the action on the pitch, there was little surprise. It was the same frailties, shortcomings and issues City have had to deal with all season – although usually only away from Carrow Road.

“When we’ve have to stand up and be counted this season, we’ve done it at home – we haven’t done it today,” Martin added. “You can try too hard to win sometimes, and then we give them a goal and it makes it a lot harder. I always fancy us if we keep a clean sheet going into half-time, I fancy us to win games. But we’ve never bounced back well enough this season from conceding a goal. So it’s up to us to sort that out.

“The lads are hurting. I’m fed up with coming out and saying that, but they are. Credit to West Brom. They had a game plan and stuck to it, but we need to be better than that to break teams down if they are going to come here and sit off us when they’re defending.

“We have been great when not conceding a goal, keeping a clean sheet and then driving on, but when we go behind like that, we need to be so much better and find a way to work around it.

“It is frustrating. There is no lack of desire or effort. People can talk about that, but no chance – you can’t question it. The lads are doing everything they can. They are shattered in there. We just lacked the quality. It’s as simple as that.

“If you question the desire and commitment, you are wrong and I’ll have a conversation with anyone about it because the lads are devastated in there. We have to pick ourselves up. We haven’t shown enough quality in the final third a lot this season. This was the same story. We need to work that one out quickly.”

  • Time for something to be done by the Board to get everyone back on board. The obvious action is to move CH aside now and let Neil Adams take over the last five games at the helm. This will hopefully have the effect of :- 1) Motivating the Players and thereby getting more from the remaining 5 fixtures. 2) Appeasing the Fans who are clearly passionate about the Club. The Board need to give us the best fighting chance to get enough points to stay in the PL. Even if we do slip down, the pain will be somewhat eased by the fact that they at least took a popular and calculated risk in the nick of time. If they don't, and we do go down then things will get nasty, fractious and divisive and the posts on here will get nastier and nastier. Time for Mr. McNasty to show his Mr.Hyde side !

  • I have no beef with Russell nor John Ruddy both of whom have served this club with distinction. However I can't say the same for many of their dispirited, half-hearted, colleagues. And nothing of any merit at all for Hughton and his coaching crew, all of whom have been lost at sea since they arrived. Finally, we have the Board of Directors and its CEO who have sat on their hands while all around them was so obviously going pear-shaped. Yesterday was just another typical debacle; all too predictable. Felt so sorry for the fans who as usual turned up in their thousands and in hope, only to leave once again feeling totally short-changed, angry, bewildered and at a loss to know why nothing was done months ago to try to stem these soulless, uninspiring, joyless and often witless performances. One bright note for me: I was able to get down to La Rosaleda at lunchtime to witness a great game of football between Malaga and Granada. Both teams played the ball on the ground, the pass and movement was excellent and excitement abounded. Malaga are an average team who play together, play constructive football and who to a man have spirit, fight and determination in spades. I recall, sadly, that was how it used to be at Carrow Road!

Not such a bad life, being a professional footballer, is it? I`m impressed that you`ve bought into Chrissy`s mantra about the importance of `quality in the final third`. You do yorself no credit with that nonsense. Move on.

My differences with CH are technical, being a qualified Senior Coach in Marathon and Middle Distance Running and I would suspect that as a Professional Footballer that he would difficult to believe in. The fact that City are facing relegation shows how poorly you and your friends have performed. Players are transient,as are managers. Fans are for life. We are the ones that have to live with the consequences of your actions. It is insulting to fans that you even suggest that they " Get behind you ". Perhaps Martin as club captain could meet with the board and tell them what is going on behind the scenes - as they seem to be carrying on in blissful ignorance at the moment. Then you would win back the respect of the fans Mr.Martin.

Personally, I'd rather we stay up and have a change of management and coaching staff in the summer. Yes, there's a good argument in favour of promoting Neil Adams now, with coaching support from Darren Huckerby (and how about Dion Dublin too?!) but do you really think the board are going with that? Bookies have us as 4th favourites to go down. I know 17th place is hardly what we were hoping for at the start of the season but I guess we'd all accept it now and look for a huge improvement in quality and results next season with a new management team. Booing, showing your displeasure etc is completely understandable after the bs we've had to endure recently. We need a change in management even if we stay up (if not more so), but what is verbally abusing and attacking our players going to accomplish? Also to that one fan who abused John Ruddy, he's maybe the one player we have who's been consistently solid, let down by an abysmal defence this season, he's the player who least deserves that. As an aside, does anyone else find it depressing that if we stay up then there are three teams worse than us in the so called Best League In The World?

Ruddy was hardly blameless for the goal....Olsen and yourself, are trying to add life to an absent attack, leaving holes at the back....When if ever will this manager realise that to win you have to score a goal ...Is Snodgrass as bloody minded off the pitch, as he is on it?....How many groups of players do you have in the canteen?...It's time that you all went 'on strike, in support of those that have little else in their lives!....turn the clock forward 2 years and NONE of you will be here to wear a City shirt....but the crowd will still keep coming!.....

  • Shame on you , if a torrent of abuse is directed your way it is well deserved, go and "speak to someone about that" if you wish, it will make you seem even more foolish. To avoid valid and worthy criticism you have to put in a Premier performance because that is what you are PAID to do! You DID NOT! If a little storm comes your way it is because YOU DESERVE IT!!!!!!

  • Quite right DUBAI I have been shouting from the rooftops since before Christmas for ADAMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I honestly believe we have ONE and ONLY one chance to escape the drop.P45s all round tomorrow for the 3 clowns. And a 5 game gig for Adams and Huckerby. Go straight for the jugular at Craven Cottage from the first whistle and nick the odd couple of points from the big boys. !!!!! As for Mr Martin well he gives 100 pc every week but how he can defend the rest of the players and management is laughable. Can anyone even in the dark days of Roeder ever remember such a disgraceful shambles our club finds itself in. Why oh why when the manager has lost the dressing room and supporters does the Board still remain in hibernation?????????????????? HUGHTON OUT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Indeed, canaryinslovenia, Dubai is indeed a very late convert but he`s the only one who called it right ;-) Good old Dubai, you know I am in awe of your perspicacity and optimism! CIS, yours was a supremely polite posting. Top man! Respect! Pax Canaria. OTBC. Long live the Queen. I wonder if S. Fry voted in favour of the club`s action?

  • Genuinely sorry it came to this, he seemed a decent bloke. Probably for the best though, things on the pitch were getting worse, and off the pitch were getting nasty. Let's all unite again and get behind Adams whatever the next 5 games bring.

  • "There is no lack of desire or effort"!!!! Please, we all have eyes, we watched the game! You cannot keep on trotting out that lie when it is obvious that there IS a lack of effort and there IS a lack of desire. Do you ever watch a replay of a match that you have contributed to? You need to look in the mirror, realise that you are not as good as you think you are, and make amends .
