Russell Martin and the rest of the Norwich City squad have been put through their paces by manager Chris Hughton and his coaching staff at their pre-season training camp in Austria.

The Scottish international told the club’s official website: “It feels like we’ve been back for a while already because the lads look really fit and sharp for this stage in pre-season.

“It was raining last night, but then the sun came out while we were training. It’s a good start and it’s going to be a good week I think. The facilities here are fantastic.

“It was a tough first session, but we used the footballs which means the lads didn’t mind it.

“I think you expect that when you come back for the first two or three weeks it’s going to be full days. You work hard, put the effort in, and hopefully you’ll get your reward.

“Obviously when we’re back the games come pretty thick and fast so it’s a good time to get the lads back together and enjoy each other’s company.

“There has been lots of possession and technical work which can only improve you as players.

“I think the lads are really excited to see how the season develops, but at the minute the sessions have been really sharp and really high intensity, and that’s what we’re used to.

“Every manager has his own way of doing things, but I think the lads are really enjoying it.

“It’s a great set of lads here now, I’ve said it over and over again, the banter is fantastic, and as the week goes on I’m sure we’ll have more stories to share and more laughs.

“We need this week really for the new lads to integrate, and they’ve settled in really well. It’ll be a good week.”

  • Ah dear friends, be patient and I believe all will be revealed! Hughton did hint that the next three to four weeks would see plenty of activity in the transfer market and new faces joining the club. I think a lot of work is going on behind the scenes as we speak and it does take time to get everything in place. And I am sure Hughton knows the type of players that are needed. So keep positive guys and we will be pleasantly surprised!!! OTBC

  • Shouldn't worry about Gunter Brew, not really sure that he was needed anyway! If they stay fit there would seem to be sufficient defesive cover but the question is are they up to it?

  • btw, Russ seems to be the regular spokesman these days. Is he Captain designate, I wonder? Holty gave the impression in a recent interview that the Captaincy wasn`t of prime importance to him. He`ll always be a leader on the pitch whether skipper or not. So glad he stayed. Btw, I hope none of the "banter" between the players crosses the boundary into "offensive". ;-)

  • Good to hear about the possession and techinical work, that is an area we needed to improve in. Im sure some new faces will join soon enough, hopefully some pacey full backs and wingers. If we can keep Ayala and Vaughan fit they will be like new signings too. OTBC

  • Ah dear friends, do not panic. I'm sure Hughton has everything under control and the elusive experienced defender and striker will appear before we can say "Jack Robinson". Saying that, we do have said players already as part of the squad; new management styles and keeping fit will I believe motivate the likes of Morison, C Martin and Vaughn along with Ayala, R Bennett, R Martin and even our very own Elliott Ward. No telling what new heights these guys will rise to to keep us in the PL!!! It's all part of the exciting new era. OTBC

  • That`s true, Canarygirl; it`s not a bad squad. If we get lucky and Vaughan stays injury free and performs, we`ll be happy. I think Ward will surprise a few people when he`s had a proper pre-season which he did not last year. Tierney seems to be still with us and Holty will be raring to go. Fresh manager can freshen things up. OTBC.

  • True enough, canarydownunder, that`s how it happened last year. But I suppose it makes sense that Hoots assesses what he`s got before rushing into what generally seems a rather stagnant transfer market. I notice a few Champ sides with Prem ambitions are interested in Joey Barton. Madness, in more ways than one!
