Leeds United have received a £5m bid from an unnamed Championship club for reported Norwich City target Ross McCormack.

The Canaries were recently touted with a summer move for the Scottish international who was last season’s 28-goal top scorer in the Championship, with the 27-year-old attracting interest from a host of clubs in the top two divisions of English football.

City made their first foray into the market last week to recruit Bournemouth striker Lewis Grabban but new boss Neil Adams has made no secret of his desire to bolster the club’s striking options after the club’s Premier League relegation.

The Yorkshire Evening Post revealed on Friday lunchtime Leeds have received the £5m bid for McCormack within the past 24 hours.

Championship play-off final losers Derby County have also been heavily linked with McCormack in recent days, although the Derby Telegraph reported later on Friday afternoon the Rams were not believed to be the unnamed Championship club.

United’s Italian owner Massimo Cellino is now reportedly considering the offer but is not due back in England until Sunday.

The Evening Post state Newcastle United made an enquiry last week but the Magpies denied tabling a formal bid, despite Cellino claiming to have rejected a ‘substantial offer’ from St James’ Park. McCormack signed a four-year deal 12 months ago but the departure of Whites’ boss Brian McDermott earlier this summer could trigger the coveted striker’s exit. Former Rangers trainee McCormack has scored 53 goals in 137 appearances since joining Leeds in 2010.

Adams distanced City from speculation linking them with Blackburn hitman Jordan Rhodes follow Grabban’s arrival, but Norwich are still in the market for fresh firewpower after a poor top flight goal return from Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Gary Hooper.

The Canaries have previously recruited Bradley Johnson, Jonny Howson, Robert Snodgrass and Luciano Becchio from Elland Road over recent seasons.

  • To be fair it wasnt a surprise to me and it wasnt a surprise to most WBA fans. I wrote a comment on social media saying WBA were going down the same route we did by stating their new manager would be more of a head coach who answers to a technical director & head of recruitment. In response within minutes was a sea of WBA fans telling me I was a fool and they'd been doing this for years. After looking back I found they had been. Never realised as I always assumed it was just the old fashioned manager and back room team with Clarke & Mel etc. I know they are not a superstar model but its worked fairly well for them and i've never noticed they're technical director causing any issues int he public eye, so maybe it will work for us providing we get the right men for the job(s).

  • I've got a good idea, let's enjoy the World Cup... less Fer & Yobo(hip or no hip), then we'll see action at Carra Rud in July, a couple Pre-Season games will show the way... till then I'll Chill, or try because last season did my Health or Blood Pressure any good at all, in Neil we must trust.

  • @Lincs - I honestly had to consult Wiki to remind myself who Irvine was + what he'd been doing for the last few years. Our appointment of NA supported by his back-room boys looks positively inspired by comparison. Well if we don't get out of the Chumpionship @ the first attempt, looks like a trip to The Hawthorns will be back on the map for the season after this one...

  • My guess Dobby re strikers on move is it has to be Becchio who will be presented with a replica bench painted in Johnstone yellow. RVW will go out on loan after playing in the first Chump fixture to register his goal for the season. Grabban and Hoops will need to score the goals that by Xmas make us promotion favourites. If it is not working out looks like Sherwood and Lennon will still be available to replace Adams. Sadly we have missed out on Alan Irvine whose WBA appointment is being widely celebrated in the West Midlands, particularly at Wolves.

  • If 1p5wich were eligible to contest The Johnstone Paint Trophy (All in good time....), maybe the sponsors would substitute the actual trophy for some paint more to the Donkeys` liking? Hammerite is the best there is for painting rusty old ironwork, though. Ideal for the Portaloo Road turnstile. Yes, that is singular. One`s plenty enough. Saves on staff. I`m sure Johnstone`s will have something suitable in their product range. Another topic: I hope Martin O`Neill is not tempted to offer Hughton a job, now Mr. Loyalty has cleared off to usurp Lambo at Villa. Watch your back, Gorbalschev, there`s dangerous villain lurking behind that arras....

  • In this weeks Peterborough Telegraph their sports columnist suggests bringing in a rule that makes players stay with their clubs after relegation so they suffer along with the fans they've hacked off with their incompetence. As examples of relegated players instantly manoeuvering exits he cites Hooper, RVW and Fer. Poor Norwich, he says, disloyal players and a dreadful managerial appointment. Don't think the guy bears a grudge, just his view as an outsider looking in. We might wonder why Darren Ferguson has won a contract extension with Posh following an unsuccessful play off campaign. Because he won a cup? (Johnstones Paint). Or his vision to blood youth players and recruit bargains from non league. Like some people say, it comes down to what you wish for.

The club rejected the offer, releasing the statement "We are grateful for the kind thought but we don`t really like blue and, in any case, the turnstiles aren`t really used that much these days".

  • I agree with Swiss Canary. How can we know how good or bad Becchio might have been, since Hughton stubbornly refused to give the chap a chance. In 31 games for Leeds, Becchio scored 20 goals. Just before we exchanged him for Morison. Good strike rate at any level. Questions need to be asked about this fiasco, and others, but I doubt they ever will be.

  • We need a big centre forward to target and to put himself about, unless Adams is intendiing more play to feet than to head. Are we going for the 2-3-5 formation from 1966 World Cup with all the strikers and wingers? Just hope that with Plan A as being all out attack, somewhere there's a plan B if it isn't working after 6 games or so...

  • I hope I am wrong but it seems Adams is continuing with the same mistake that the previous so called manager was making. McCormack is yet another No 10 style player as he is under 6ft tall, we already have four of them at the club right now but still need a decent target man. We could indeed swap Becchio for him but would he be any better or more importantly fit in with our style of play.

Players who so many on here are happy to cast aside like Hoolahan, Becchio, Pilks etc....may suddenly be in favour and others who you could never have thought wouldn't be, may be out in the cold. Who knows? Roll on August

  • I think we may see more of Becchio this season...I think we're gonna see a completely different all out attack Norwich...(Perhaps we could swap RvW with Leeds for McCormack plus £1 million maybe? lol)...I think it's just important to keep the players we want to keep, offload the deadwood and ones who don't wanna be here...and make sure the whole machine is working together and singing off the same hymn sheet...I think it'll be an exciting new era for Norwich after the mostly rubbish, negative football we've had to endure over the past 18 months!!! I researched it and the player was sold last year from the club that was said to be selling him now. Someone made an error as we were said to have made an enquiry LAST YEAR! Jokes aside I agree with you, their is potential but thats likely why the papers run with it. The only truth in it likely is someone (an agent obviously) has leaked a snippet of something happening to the media and now they've run wild making guesses here there and everywhere. Wait and see. I wouldnt bet there is any truth in it.

Too many others would be interested in doing business with Leeds for him....BUT it would certainly cheer me up and give me a good laugh if we signed yet another Leeds player. A good one at that as well who is extremely proven at Championship level and desperate for a shot at a higher level. Where exactly he would fit in, even if we did off load Becchio, RVW or Hooper is an issue but who knows.
