Manager Chris Hughton may have insisted Norwich City are not interested in Blackburn Rovers centre-back Scott Dann, but the Lancashire club’s manager have admitted clubs are chasing the defender’s signature.

Hughton dismissed a Dann deal at his pre-match press conference on Monday, saying: “I want to deal in fact and we have not made a bid for Scott Dann.”

Local media in the north-west believe Crystal Palace are the main club trying to sign Dann, although Rovers manager Gary Bowyer said it would be “wrong” to discuss any bids his club have received.

“There are clubs interested in Scott Dann,” Bowyer told the Lancashire Telegraph.

“But until they meet the valuation that the club has got on him, and until that is put in writing to the club, it is pure speculation.”

Asked what would happen if a club met Dann’s valuation, Bowyer said: “That would be a decision for the people above me to make. I could only advise them on my opinion.”

On the back of two successive clean sheets and eight overall for the City defence so far this season, a centre-back may not appear to be a particular panic for Hughton.

But the City boss is without Michael Turner for “a number of weeks” with a hamstring injury and has allowed Dani Ayala to join Middlesbrough permanently, leaving him with just Russell Martin as cover.

As such, national newspaper the Daily Mirror continues to link City with a loan deal for Lazio’s centre-back Michael Ciani, although the Frenchman started a 1-0 Coppa Italia semi-final defeat at Napoli last night.

  • Hughton seems unfortunately incapable of inspiring or instructing a better performance than current, with tactics that stifle and contradict his purchases (RvW and Hooper - why buy them if you deploy a system that doesn't feed them???) - if mid to low table survival scrap Premier League membership is the long term goal then he won't be out if a job will he?! On a positive note Ciani looked decent for Lazio - strong, confident, not afraid to get his body behind the ball and a surprising burst of energy to get forward if allowed - why isn't he in a yellow jersey already? Norwich seem afraid to play good football right now, and the same indecision is plaguing behind the scenes and in the transfer market too - the rot has to stop!,

  • I cannot understand how a defence minded manager can sit with only two fit centre backs in his squad, yes Martin can move there at a pinch but that really is a last resort. What happens if one gets injured and the other gets sent off for example or even one goes off form. Most clubs have at least four centre backs in their squads as they realise just how important it is to be strong at the back.

  • Crafty old Brew. Funny that similar things were being said at the game re money available or loans. Most people agree it would be a wait and see what happens during the rest of the season. What worries me is if we dont make it in the prem next season

  • I have to say I dont understand this one. Surely its better the one you know, Ayala. Younger and cheaper as well.

  • I am not sure who would want to buy RVW right now, 1 goal in half a season does not suggest he is on fire that is for sure. However, I live in hope that he will come good at some stage but think he, like Hooper needs to be played with a decent target man and therein lies the problem, the manager does not seem to see it that way, hence once again, nobody looks like being signed right now. Like you Brew, I am convinced that Ayala was good enough to act as a back up, likewise Barnett and they were certainly better than no-one. Perhaps we will see Almander in the back four if we now lose a couple for a match or two.

  • Couldn't agree more Re. Dani Ayala - what a waste of talent, not giving the guy the opportunity to prove his worth - touch of Becchio syndrome.

  • Seems Joseph Yobo is on his way from Fenerbahce, on loan, TK. At least Hughton hasn`t been given too much to spend in this window, just sticking plaster money. I feel that`s a positive, in the Bigger Picture. Survival and `see ya some time`.

  • I share your bewilderment, TK. Surely Ayala was worthy of a back-up role? We have let several CBs leave now; Barnett, Ward, Ayala but only one in - Turner. Plus, under Lambo, Whitbread departed. Of those, Barnett & Ayala could`ve done a job, surely? Hoots may confound us yet with a surprise recruit, or confound us even more by recruiting nobody. Off-topic a bit; BBC Gossip has it that Cardiff are selling striker Andreas Cornelius back to Copenhagen for £3.5m, which is £5.0m less than they paid for him last Summer. We paid £8.5m for RvW didn`t we? OMG, I hope not... Maybe that`s what lies behind the Malky Mackay business?
