Paul Lambert’s former Norwich City coaching duo Ian Culverhouse and Gary Karsa have been suspended by Aston Villa pending an internal investigation.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Well-respected coach and ex-Canaries’ stalwart Culverhouse and City’s former head of football operations Karsa will not be involved for Villa’s Premier League game against Southampton this weekend. Lambert will instead be assisted by Gordan Cowans and Shay Given pending the outcome of an internal investigation.

Villa declined to elaborate further in a club statement released on Tuesday afternoon which read: “The club can confirm that Gordon Cowans and Shay Given have been temporarily promoted to assist manager Paul Lambert and his first team coaching staff. The club can also confirm in response to media speculation that Ian Culverhouse and Gary Karsa have been suspended pending an internal investigation.”

Culverhouse and Karsa left Norwich to join up again with Lambert in the Midlands in 2012 after a successful stint at Carrow Road that saw Norwich win promotion from League One and the Championship before consolidating in the Premier League. The duo had previously worked with Lambert at Colchester.

“I’m delighted to have Gordon and Shay to assist me in preparing the team for Saturday which is what the whole group is focused,” said Lambert.

Cowans added: “The manager has asked me to step up to assist him at this time and I’ll do my utmost for the club and the manager in helping prepare the team for Saturday’s game against Southampton.”

Given is urging Villa’s players to concentrate on the matter in hand and easing the club away from the relegation scrap. Villa are currently four points clear of the bottom three and have lost their last four games on the spin.

“As players, it’s important that each and every one of us take responsibility right now and I’m delighted to play my part in helping the manager and the team go and try to win on Saturday,” he said.

  • Hi, LincsCan. That Finnish message roughly translated into his thanks for being welcomed to the football forum. I don`t know why he suddenly developed troll tendencies - had been OK at first. Sharing his grief as a 1p5wich fan along with sympathising with Canaries` sufferings. Hey-ho. As you say, I`m just an old softy. Reminds me of a poem about the traditional friendliness of local pubs - "Halve your sorrows, share your joys, With open-faced good ol` boys". OTBC.

  • FFS, MBA - the `Marina` thing was a joke! You once posted that your business was to do with maintaining\repairing boats. I seem to remember, on your advice, I even looked up your website. `Twas but a bit of harmless parody - as if you claimed I owned Molson Coors or suchlike. ;-) Look, I didn`t have a `classical` education, and my parents were of the generation (and `class`) where you left school at 14. But - they had learned to write (very) decently and were insistent that good language was good manners. Good manners are, of course, passé. Ergo, so is good language, seemingly. Shame. Btw, I really like Matt`s stuff and I suspect, if I knew him, I`d like him, too.

However, on topic, Lambos lot have lost four on the trot and how comforting would it be if they maintained that form and joined up with us in Heartbreak Hotel on the final day? Talking of heartbreak MB, you are an old softie sticking up for BlueFinn. Aren't there any Ipswich boards he can post on? Ok, he got a salvo from me earlier in the week but after losing to Fulham, suffering troll Sunday, then on Monday finding his jokes about thick Norfolkians(?) and our team being "ruff" what kind of accolades did he expect from a long suffering Canary? Olive branch? Stick of millett maybe and see where it leads.

When I was redundificated by Greene King, I returned to Suffolk from Bedfordshire with my to-be 2nd wife after a short time living in Ely. I had previously lived in and around Bury St. Edmunds for about 13 years. We then lived in Haughley, near Stowmarket, for about 8 years. I designed & built a micro-brewery in a Stowmarket pub, and worked at a Residential Care Home in Barking, not far from Chez Delia. I probably know Suffolk better than I know Norfolk! I actually like Suffolk, apart from the cor-blimey enclaves and Ipswich! You haven`t told me what `defcon1` is. Is it a lavatory cleaner?? ;-) LincsCan, I think L-I-G may now be Neil Adams is.... etc. We seem to have upset FINN.BLUE. He isn`t such a bad sort. I feel guilty now. :-(

  • the ''3 Stoogies'' of Lambert, Culverhouse and Karsa do not do themselves any favours. When the Villa fans were on their backs at most home games, those 3 interact with the fans and give as good as they get back and the language from them is just as ''coarse'' and the fans language so this does not surprise me in the slightest. As for having then back here after trying to sue us even thogh they were the ones who walked out on us. If the board took them back then it would be a big mistake. Lamberts style is not suted to the premier League. That is why he has struggled at Villa

  • Before Lambert you have to go back a long way to find a NCFC manager who was head hunted by one of the big boys (Villa are biggish). By my reckoning that was Mike Walker and when it didn't work out at Everton he came back. And that didn't work out either. Not that I think the pattern is likely to be repeated. However, perhaps someone at Villa has worked out where they might end up if their easy 6 points from NCFC are not available next season and are setting Lambert up for a fall. No need to worry, Villa. NA is about to unleash Becchio to score the goals that will keep us up and secure our futures.

Also rumoured that Marc Albrighton had to travel home on his own by train from Crystal Palace. PL will leave in the summer. This is the AV board & HR acting, Shay Given is not a PL favourite, so it's putting pressure on. Similar situation to Malky at Cardiff.

Lambert always left training to those two so id assume its something thats happened on the training ground. Obviously guess work at this stage. I know for a fact culverhouse got in trouble a few months ago for an arguement with a fan where he basically told the fan to F off.

All opinion but based on what Lambert said 1000 times it wouldnt surprise me if Lambert walked out on villa if Cully or Karsa were fully removed rather than just suspended. As he always said "the 3 of them come as a team". All depends on exactly whats happened. Who knows the pressure could have got to Lambert and hes taken it out on his trusty servants. From experience though Lambert was always vocal on how he left anything on the training ground to Cully & Karsa so the fact only those two have been suspened makes me think its something training ground related. Wait and see but dont get excited about them returning here. Pub talkers will of course have you believe its a done deal within the next week or two mark my words ;)
