Norwich City want their season of toil to hurry up and come to an end

Sebastien Bassong admitted to wishing the Premier League season would come to an end – so long as Norwich City have achieved their survival goal.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The Canaries’ campaign has rarely touched the heights that supporters would have been hoping to see back in August.

And there is another big game in their battle for top-flight survival coming up, with West Brom visiting Carrow Road on Saturday.

“Yeah we do (want the season to be over),” said the City team captain. “It’s been a long and tiring season.

“So now we are getting towards the end of the season we just want to finish it well – especially when the last four games we have are not the easiest.

“We will try to get ourselves safe before that, and we’ll see what happens.

“Saturday is just going to be another Premier League game. I don’t feel any heat on us or on myself or whoever. It’s another important game, there are fewer and fewer games left, so we’re getting really close to the end of the season.

“It’s a home game, a game we’ve got to win – as is every game. So it’s not going to be so much different.”

Despite some of the on-pitch bickering from City in the disappointing defeat at Swansea on Saturday, Bassong has no fears over whether he and his team-mates will stick together for the remaining six games of the season.

“It’s something I’m sure about, that the group are going to stick together,” added the Cameroon centre-back.

“We are grown men and we have got to be able to take the criticism on the chin, because after a 3-0 defeat (against Swansea) no one can hold their hand up and say they have been at their best.

“As a group, even if someone played less bad than someone else, the whole team lost.

“And that’s one of our strengths, to stay together and be able to bounce back – as we have shown before and I’m sure we will show it again.”

  • TrevorKeith and Mattias, you do realise that I am criticising Seb Bassong the Norwich City team Captain, NOT Seb Bassong as a person (I would not presume) . His form is so poor as to be called rubbish and he is a waste of space in the very truest terms of the words in that he is keeping another player out of the team who actually wants to play and may show a whole lot more commitment than he does at present.

  • This just underlines what I have said before: we have no leadership on or off the pitch. Yes, Bassong, it is more than just another game. It is the key to our survival in the Prem League - or not. And on it hangs the small matter of some £80 million! I am sure McNally and the Board have noted your blase remarks! And I am sure they don't see it as just another game. If we don't win this they will have the bean counters out trying to work out how to cut costs - and probably ruing the odd £27 million Hughton spent in the summer for nil return. On the goals tally alone it must work out at several million per goal!!! Get a grip, Bassong, and show some leadership and commitment. Saturday is a very big game - might not be for you but for 26,000 of us it certainly ain't "just another game"!!!

  • The reason why Norwich is having a relegation season is not JUST Hughton, it is ALSO Bassong. He is a gigantic waste of money and is stealing a place in the team from somebody who actually wants to play soccer! I do not want to stoop to name calling because I do not think that he is an effeminate thief of oxygen like my neighbour called him when he gave away that penalty for no good reason and cost us a win. BUT, please tell me what qualities he brings to the team which make it stronger or improves our performance?

When a Judge handed down an unusually lenient sentence, he shouted from the dock "give me just a little more time". Btw, it's ChairMEN of the Board. According to Google there were 4 of them. Never knew that. I think NCFC have 4 Chairmen of the Board too (ok, one is female).......all of them singing from the wrong hymn sheet.

  • " A long and tiring season " ? This from the Captain? What exactly so tiring ? Is it the long luxury coach rides to the luxury hotels ? Is it the two-three hour days at the training ground ? Is it the long queues to see the best medical specialists for free treatment for injury and illness. Is it the tiresome hours spent with accountants trying to manage the massive salaries. One thing for certain it is not time spent playing in the Premiership games. Far too many times Bassong and his team mates need not to have bothered changing. Their inept , lacklustre, gutless performances have allowed City to slide into the relegation zone ,again.

Seb sounds like he's just going to turn up and have a kick about, hoping that others provide the inspiration and determination to succeed. If ever there was proof that he shouldn't be captain, this is it.

  • Ok not defending him but last season everyone (myself included) referred to Bassong as Vital. Especially when he was out injured and we shipped goals for fun after the 10 game streak. No excuse though, hes played poorly (like many many many many many others) and should be dropped if someone is playing well enough or takes the chance to keep him out. However no point branded him rubbish as he clearly wasnt last season? Same as RVW, Fer, Hooper, Snodgrass, Ruddy, Pilks, Wes etc....all who have clearly not played as well as they did last season for NCFC or who ever they played for etc. Does that mean they are now "rubbish players". That statement itself is rubbish. Ask most Spurs season ticket holders (most who travel week in week out to london from our region) about Bassong and most will testify how vital Bassong was along with Kaboul in getting them into the champions league! Hardly an outcast. With the champions league though came money and more signings and eventually he like others who had been so vital getting them their were moved on. Im not going to sit her pro Bassong though as unlike alot on these boards they cant see anyone elses opinion past their own. Ill take on board the Wolves fans opinions that while on loan to them he was woeful and to be fair showing similar form to what he has this season. While hes playing poor I refuse to write him off and deem him rubbish.

At least he tries. Who would you use as the other CB, TK? Yobo if fit? I`m not sure R. Bennett should be thrown in at RB at this juncture. Is Whittaker no longer seen as good enough? Bassong`s interview on Canary Call was bizarre. Sounded like a depressed person speaking. Listless. Though Turner is no footballing artist, he does have a bit of steel about him, specially when it comes to making blocks. I Hughton I Trust to get it right on the day..... I had a dream last night. Playing Ar$enal in the final game of the season, we must win to stay up. We are 2-0 down with 12 minutes to go. Hughton is taken ill and replaced in the Technical area by Delia. Saint Dee immediately brings on Becchio as substitute, replacing Ruddy. All-out attack ensues and Luciano scores a hat-trick, the winner coming in the last second via a deflection off his well-toned bottom. Chrissy returns from his `funny turn` to parade round the touchline, hugging his hero Becchio, to raptuous applause from his adoring fans. All`s well.....

Also he is out of touch with reality if he thinks that "Saturday is just going to be another Premier League game" coupled with his statement " I don't feel any heat on us or on myself-" leads me to believe he is not in the right frame of mind to be competing on Saturday let alone leading the team. We need everyone with their heads in the right place for this crucial match- his is evidently NOT. What qualities is he bringing to the team which make it stronger? He is keeping someone out of the side who actually WANTS to play, not just counting out another 90 minutes before the end of the season! How can he justify his selection on his current form? Of course it is not his fault that he neither knows how to conduct himself as a team Captain when talking to the press nor knows how to inspire and lead a team on the pitch, that is Hughtons' fault for selecting him.

His aerial challenge was weak, his positional sense was poor with little awareness of the opposition around his, he was a yard too slow in almost all his challenges, his judgement and timing were poor (especially when he made a poor tackle in the area which gave away a penalty and lost us 2 valuable Premier points), and his leadership of the team on the pitch was poor. Since that game I have witnessed no improvement.

Some NCFC fans are far to keen to make someone the villian and subject of all their abuse. If you want someone to vent at, aim it at Hughton. Hes the biggest cause of our trouble quite clearly. End of the day Bassong was utterly Vital last season. So much so that we honestly felt without him we didnt stand a chance and with him we could keep a clean sheet against anyone. to say hes a waste of space and rubbish is childish, petty and incredibly poor from people who likely was raving about him last season. The weight of expectation hangs heavy every week, and when you know things should be better, and that you personally bear a responsibility for the position, it just gets heavier. Some people will feel that way, and others just brush it off and 'go again' Normally you pick the captain from the second group. Seb isn't daft, and on his day (or season) can be immense, but it hasn't worked for him this year, and it is obvious why he wants the season to end. While we will never become one of the MANY teams on the football league hightlights that has a sea of empty seats on show each week (Ipswich, Boro quite possibly the worst offenders!) I just dont want to go back to a place where the football just simply does not matter to the rest of the world. The premier league is the be all and end all. The place to be! Plus while I watch the football league show through choice, how many NCFC fans would want to wait up until past midnight to view Steve Claridge or Rosenior talking even more rubbish than Shearer and co an hour earlier! could go on and on about why I dont want to be back in the championship but the most important one is aimed right at the big headed (mostly kids) who claim "oh at least we'd win more in the championship". We WONT! their isnt to many yoyo clubs about these days and the chance of us being one is slim considering how usually when we drop back down we stay down and fail to achieve for many many many years. It has been clear all season that he cannot do the captain's role, just as he appears to lose concentration at key moments. I too would rather see a player giving his all, even if he is not quiet as talented. Our biggest problem is that both Turner and Bennett prefer to play to the right of centre so do not really form a partnership. Perhaps we should try Martin in the centre and move Bennett to right back for example and give Snodgrass the captain's armband as he at least seems to show passion.

  • Kenf, I can understand your anger as I feel very much the same, as El Dingo says, I was being a bit flippant suggesting Bennett be moved to right back as well but right now our defence looks all over the place far too often. How many times have we been caught out when we have had a corner and Bassong and Yobo have gone up, once the ball is lost, neither have the pace or determination to recover their defensive position. I think Bennett is slightly quicker but as El Dingo pointed out, his distribution lets him down and I fear he cannot play well with Turner as they both favour the right hand side, hence I wondered if Martin might do a better job. Yes he probably is our best right back right now although I thought he went through a bad spell earlier in the season. Whittaker replaced him and had a poor game so we were back to square one so to speak.

Cafu's the better out of him and Whittaker so there he must stay IMO. The only other option is Elliot Bennett, maybe worth a try? How we miss grasshopper Naughton.
