Norwich City’s Republic of Ireland youth international Kyle McFadden aims to repay Neil Adams’ faith and force his way into the Canaries’ first team squad.
The teenage centre back was part of Adams’ FA Youth Cup winning set-up in 2013 and the Irish youngster has revealed Adams and the club’s coaching staff believe he can be part of the club’s Championship push over the coming months. McFadden was handed a one-year contract extension following the club’s top flight relegation.
“I’ve worked with Neil for a few years and he says he can see a footballer in me and has given me another year now to prove myself,” said McFadden. “You don’t want to see your club relegated but from a personal view you feel you may have more chance to play. I’ve spoken to people around the club and they have said if I keep progressing I will be in and around the first team this season. It is up to me to come back this summer and get my fitness programme right to catch the eye of the coaching staff.
“If I am part of the pre-season games that would be a good start but at Norwich they are not afraid to give the younger players a chance in cup games so if I am not in early doors I will be looking to force my way in.”
McFadden has struck up a strong bond with senior Republic of Ireland internationals Wes Hoolahan and Anthony Pilkington, currently in America as part of Martin O’Neill’s squad for a mini friendly tour which concludes tonight against Portugal.
“If I ever feel homesick or uncomfortable I can go and speak to Wes and Anthony,” said McFadden, speaking to Highland radio station at home in his native Donegal. “We always chat and they are like friends now. They are the closest lads I know to the first team. Norwich look after their young players very well. I have been there three years now and I just want to push on and aim for the first team. It was a big shot in the arm to get a longer contract. I thought they might keep on more of the younger players, like last season, but I am one of the lucky ones.”
