As the Canaries prepare to face Leicester City in the fifth round at Carrow Road (3pm), the Wales international midfielder has already gone further in the competition than at any stage of his career.

Two seasons ago, Crofts was in the Brighton side beaten 3-2 at Aston Villa in round four – as indeed was City team-mate Elliott Bennett – but now he has his sights on bigger things.

“This stage is the furthest I’ve been. I’ve played against some big teams with Brighton and Gillingham but I’ve never gone this far,” he said.

Victory today would leave the Canaries just one round away from a Wembley semi-final, but Crofts is not one to get carried away.

“We only concentrate on the next game but we know what’s at stake at the end of. We’re only a couple of Cup games away from achieving something really big and every game we go into we want to win,” he said.

“We’re doing really well in the league, and it’s a little break from that. The lads are really thriving on it and I hope we’ll be in the next round come tonight.”

The fact that Paul Lambert’s team have added 10 points to their Premier League tally since the third round win over Burnley, going a long way to securing another season in the top flight, ought to make the FA Cup a more attractive proposition.

“Maybe if you were a little bit lower in the table you might want to concentrate on playing even better in the league,” said Crofts. “I don’t think that’s ever been the case at this club since I’ve been here and since the gaffer’s been here. Every game he wants to win and that’s the same with the players.”

Crofts scored one of his eight goals last season in the 4-3 Championship win against Leicester at Carrow Road – he has yet to open his account this term – and played in the 3-2 victory in the return fixture, but does not feel that double gives City any psychological advantage. “I don’t think so. Last season we had two great results but that’s gone now and it will be a totally different game – it’s all on the day,” he said.

“We played really well against Burnley to get through but I think this will be a different test and one we have to be on our toes for. But if we keep playing the way we’re playing, we can get in the next round. We’re full of confidence because of the way things are going.”

  • Just heard that Championship side Leicester have also plucked the little yellow budgies and knocked them out of the FA Cup on their own turf. Dream on budgie fans, significant silverware will always elude you.

  • Norwich can only dream about the silverware that Town have won, this cup being one of them of course. That particular Town side would pluck the budgies today and then stuff them for the cats dinner.

  • Personally, I hope that Norwich win, and get to the semis. As to lose then really hurts.

  • Crikey Rob! That's a comment almost bordering on the sensible! I think it's safe to say that with McNally and Lambert at the club, this will never happen. Don't forget to come back to give us the benefit of your hindsight after you have "just got back" later.

  • Mr. Crofts makes no mention of Ipswich Town, so where did that come from? Best leave trying to predict the future well alone. I think it even less likely that Norwich fans would want their Club to use Ipswich as a role model.

  • Been interesting to see where 1p5wich would have ended up if the10 point deduction rule for administration had been in place. It must make a difference having someone like Marcus backing them. Norwich's crowd will be doen today as everyone flocks to see 1p5wich v Cardiff. I think they know the Cardiff manager quite well!!!

  • Not sure if many Town supporters are overly bothered about Norwich showing Town how a football club should be run... but the interesting thing about Norwich doing what Town did a decade ago is whether they will destroy themselves the very next year.
