Although the list has not been made public by the FA, it is understood the four players currently on standby are 22-year-old Bennett, Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, Huddersfield striker Jordan Rhodes and Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha.

The four players on the standby list can technically be replaced by any on the original long list of 35 up to July 25.

Meanwhile, Daniel Sturridge remains hopeful he will be able to play for Team GB after undergoing hospital tests for suspected viral meningitis. The 22-year-old forward fell ill over the weekend with what is typically considered a mild strain of the disease.

Sturridge feels confident he can recover in time to take some part in the Games.

In a statement, the England international said: “The Chelsea medical team have been closely monitoring everything and they and the doctors and nurses at St Mary’s Hospital have been outstanding throughout.

“Thankfully, I am starting to feel a lot better and I am optimistic about being able to make the Olympics.

“I am fortunate to have received many wishes of support and I want to thank everybody who has sent messages, it is much appreciated.”

Blues boss Roberto di Matteo added: “We are going to follow his situation and hopefully he will get well as soon as possible.”

Stuart Pearce’s 18-man GB squad is set to meet in Loughborough next weekend and the manager has until July 25 to select a replacement should Sturridge be forced to withdraw.

and be able to join Olympics squad.

“He is currently still in hospital but I am optimistic he will recover (in time to play).

“I think it’s a question of daily monitoring his health, that’s what matters most to him, his family and ourselves.

“We have had a doctor with him since day one and we are being updated on hourly basis.

“We will see and make a decision with the doctors and if he can join.”

Di Matteo added: “It is difficult to give a time limit today and we will have to monitor it on a daily basis.

“But the fact that he is feeling better is very positive and I am optimistic he will recover.”

  • Canary Sid; Just read on BBC that Beckham has received a one match ban in the Walt Disney League while playing for California Candyfloss. Kicked the ball at a prone opponent then argued with officials after the match. Do you think something might have upset him? Not like him to be petulant. I wonder if that so besmirches the Olympic Ethic that he`s ruled himself out? Sebaceous will be on the case!

  • That`d be a feather in his cap. No getting injured, though! I`m still waiting to hear of an "injury" to one of the over-age players so Psycho has to reinstate Becks....... No suggestion of Coe rcion, you understand. It`s all about sport, not marketing. ;-)

  • Brewer You have the same mindset as me..Bellars or Giggs to be 'Injured' and Becks in the Team.. I must say i can't understand why Jordan Rhodes and our Ryan are not ALREADY in the Squad after their performances last Season...This Olympic Team seems to have Nothing to do with Football Ability when you look at who is in the Team. Why is Declan Rudd not a Keeper or Jed Steer ?? Seems our Little Norwich gets Overlooked again...And Don't get me started on Holt as an Over Age Player...2nd Best British Striker in the Prem ??

  • Canary Sid; somebody with the same mindset.... careful, I seem to have become a sort of "Antichrist" lately! I have a jaundiced take on these Sebcolimpics. And if Psycho is Sebcoerced into retro-fitting Beckham, he is no longer worthy of his "Tag". This "sporting" event is in danger of becoming unworthy of the description. Revert to track & field. Cut out the hype. But then there`d be no money in that, would there? Rant over. Holty for Team GB!
