England director of football Sir Trevor Brooking has admitted Norwich City’s Premier League relegation did John Ruddy no favours in the wake of his World Cup snub from the Three Lions this summer.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Ruddy was left out of Roy Hodgson’s 23-man squad which headed to Brazil with the England boss opting to include former City loanee Fraser Forster alongside first choice Joe Hart and understudy Ben Foster.

Forster’s impressive Champions League form for Celtic combined with Ruddy’s tough season at Carrow Road tipped the balance, according to Brooking, who will stand down from his current FA role after the tournament.

“It was Forster’s Champions League displays over the past couple of campaigns that brought him on to England’s radar,” he said. “I remember seeing Fraser keep Barcelona at bay at Celtic Park when Celtic beat the Spaniards and Roy realised then that Forster was someone who was worth having a look at.

“That is why he was brought into the England set-up for them to analyse. He has played some of Europe’s finest clubs in the Champions League group stages recently with Celtic and there is no sterner test of your credentials than that.

“Fraser has a lot of build and size and he is the kind of keeper who dominates his penalty box. He has come through the Champions League tests at club level with flying colours.

“Ruddy was Fraser’s main competitor for the third England keeper’s jersey, but he has had a difficult season with Norwich being relegated. Fraser is in the England World Cup team on merit and fully deserves to be there.

“He will benefit greatly from being around the likes of Joe and Ben. Fraser will learn a lot from just being in their company as well as the experience of being at a World Cup tournament.”

  • My suspicions MB are that Stew still bears a grudge from when I picked up on a post he did claiming the Norwich squad, bar Suarez, was as good as Liverpools. Probably thought his moment had arrived. Or perhaps he really thinks bringing up Irish neutrality is offensive. Much worse appears in the national press about many nations, especially in World Cup years. And my comment was factual. Anyway, all anger today is solely directed at last night's ref (what was his nationality - Brazilian?). Deliberate elbow - no foul. A dive Suarez would have been proud of - penalty. Legitimate challenge on goalkeeper - no goal. Umm, biased refs, home advantage AND they play in yellow. You know, if England go home early I can think of a better team than Ireland I could transfer my support to.

  • I wish the press would stop printing such articles as all they can do is unsettle a player we need to keep. Having watched the dodge Foster play in the friendly last week, there is little doubt that Ruddy is a far better keeper. His kicking and descision making was poor and he should and could have conceded more goals. Forster on the other hand has experience in the Champions League so is without doubt a quality keeper in his own right. John Ruddy played some exceptional games last season but also had a fair share of not so good performances, however he is probably still recovering from a major injury so next season will hopefully be back to his best. All he can hope is that Woy retires after this competition and that a new manager will be impartial.

  • Hi, LincsCan. That`s a new way of blocking a submission. I don`t think I`ve ever had one of those! Why is Uncle Stew picking on you?? I think Derek McD is getting Forster\Foster mixed up too. Is it any surprise? When Chrissy was turfed out of Carra Rud, an Archant Poll showed that 43.7% of Norwich fans still called him Houghton, thought he lived in a big posh Hall and ran horse trials. Honestly, Flying Canary, I really wasn`t being nit-picky! I think Foster needs to change his name. Since Woy is clearly his adoptive daddy, he should change his name to Hodgsonsson. Might get picked for Sweden instead, then. All good. ;-)

  • TBH MB, I did a longer, reasoned out piece about Ruddy being overlooked including how players who "Retire" from England should not be invited back. It got the "May be delay, do not resubmit" response, which as we know means it will never appear. As for my Ireland comment -- the Irish, along with Scots and Welsh, will be supporting anyone but England over the next week or so, all for reasons of history, not football. The England band will play "Great Escape" (badly) - is that about football or WW2? If we meet Argentina the songs will be about the Falklands. So if I choose not to support a country that stood idly by while my country fought for freedom then, StewP, that's my choice. Like MB's fanatical support of Tony Blair. Or Roy Orbison.

  • Strangely, I find Brooking's comment one I agree with 100%. Over the course of the season I am sure Ruddy pulled off far more great saves than Forster. And could Forster really be picked on the strength of 1 game against Barca? The truth is that goalies are not judged so much on great saves as number of errors. In a losing side Ruddy had far more opportunities to make errors than Forster did when winning the chocolate box league. Hence relegation from the PL = relegation from England.

Anyway, he is still there in the fold as first call up, so anything could happen. Joe Hart could get kidnapped in Brazil, Foster could be arrested for sealing gold from a shop and Forster could slip a disc limbo dancing. If this happens our own JR could be lifting that World Cup at the Estádio Maracanã on Sunday 13th July.

Most of us have `had a go` at Woy about this classic piece of dissembling, but you, correctly, credit it to Sir Twevor Bwooking. Unless Archie has retro-corrected the original article? Not unknown.... If only Hughton had managed the `impossible` - a home win vs a feeble WBA outfit. Sir Twev & Woy would`ve had to delve deeper into their Estuawy of excuses to justify Foster benefiting from his `special relationship` with Stodgeson. Pathetic. The FA and its placemen are cronyists of the worst kind.

  • The article is pretty flawed to be fair. The whole issue boils down to Woy's old pal Foster coming out of retirement to get a nice holiday to Brazil. I can understand Woy wanting someone he trusts to be no2 to Hart and if we are honest, Foster is rightly no2 but its the coming out of retirement factor that angers me (and rightly so angers Ruddy!). The fact woy has convinced Foster to come out of retirement simply to be no2, clearly indicates he has no faith in Ruddy or Forster to be back up should Hart get sent off or injured in a major tournement. Thats likely the more worrying issue than just Ruddy being over looked.

He proved that when he was with us and he played an absolute blinder against Barcelona. So what Brooking is saying is that if we had stayed up and West Brom had gone down, which could have easily happened, Ruddy would have got the nod? I don't think so.
