Korey Smith is determined to push for a place in Norwich City’s Premier League squad after signing a one-year contract extension yesterday.

The 21-year-old midfielder found himself surplus to requirements last season, playing just once for the Canaries before spending time on loan at Championship outfit Barnsley.

Smith knows he faces a big challenge to get a game for City with so many talented players in his position available to Chris Hughton – but he is determined to give the new manager something to think about after securing his short-term future at the club.

“It feels good to sign,” he told the club’s official website. “The last three years have been great for the club and I’m looking forward to getting involved with the squad.

“Chris Hughton coming in means it’s a fresh start for everyone and for someone like me, who went out on loan, it’s a good chance to impress in pre-season so I am looking forward to getting out on the pitch.”

Smith is a product of the City Academy system and signed his first professional contract in 2008. He quickly caught the eye of previous boss Paul Lambert and was a key figure in the side that won the League One title in 2009-10, playing 40 games in the centre of the Canaries’ midfield. He also made 28 appearance as Lambert’s side made it back-to-back promotions, but lost his regular place in the side as other players were brought in.

His one and only game for City last season wasn’t a memorable one, with a below full strength line-up being thrashed 4-0 at home by MK Dons in the second round of the Carling Cup.

With no sign of a first team game he eventually went out on loan to Barnsley, making 12 appearances during a three-month spell in Yorkshire.

  • Really, NrflkM? I am Canary, born in Norwich and grew up in Ghana, but live in Hampshire at the moment. Will be coming to Ghana in a couple of weeks though, so we could catch up on all things Canary!

  • That has to be a first surely? Two Canary fans in or linked with Ghana, that is something the Prancing Donkey brigade from down south haven't got! Beat that!

  • Surprised he's only signed one year extension. Maybe to see if he gets chances? Good one for the future, I say! Chris Hughton will make him into a Nathan Redmond or Jack Butland. He spots talent. Good luck, Korey.
