Norwich City midfielder Elliott Bennett insists belief remains rock solid within the Canaries’ dressing room they can seal another season of Premier League football.

The Canaries may have slipped from the high point of their pre-festive club record Premier League unbeaten run, but Bennett is adamant they can still draw huge positives from matching the best during that spell.

“We beat some fantastic teams and also went to some difficult places and got great results,” he said. “We are working hard every day in training and that is always with the aim to go out there at the weekend and play well and get the result. We have a strong belief within the squad. We know what we are capable of and we just hope we can hit that high standard of the unbeaten run again and if we do that then I am sure we’ll be fine, but really it is about focusing on the next game. We can’t really look backwards.

“There is no point looking too far ahead into the future. You just never know what will happen, but if we can finish with the (points) gap we have now to the bottom clubs everyone in Norwich would be delighted.”

Chris Hughton’s men have drawn four of their last five Premier League tests after a difficult festive spell and Bennett cites Mark Bunn’s recent penalty stop at QPR as further evidence City will relish the fight to retain their top flight status.

“That could be a massive moment in our season. To get a point against a team down the bottom of the league and to keep that distance between us and them was vital,” he said. “Hopefully that is the case come the end of the season and it will be a point that counts in our favour. QPR were on a good run and we knew it was going to a tough game and with the new manager going in their as well he has revitalised them and brought in some new faces.

“Obviously we did get beat in those four games on the bounce at Christmas but you have to look at the teams we played. They were not an easy run of fixtures. In a few of the games I think perhaps we got a little bit unlucky. Sometimes it is just a case of riding out the bad times and trying to pick things up again and get a few positive results. That is what we have done in the last games.”

Bennett, speaking to the Premier League’s weekly official podcast show, revealed spirits remain high within the City camp – aided by the January arrival of another former Leeds recruit in Luciano Becchio to join a growing enclave that already numbered Bradley Johnson, Jonny Howson and Robert Snodgrass.

“They have all fitted in brilliantly. The other three have been here a lot longer than Luciano but they welcomed him in straight away and there is a little band of ex-Leeds men in the dressing room and it is all good fun,” said Bennett. “They get a bit of stick off the rest of the lads for their connections but they have all done well. Snoddy came in during the summer and he has been brilliant on the right wing for us and hopefully Luciano comes in and hits the ground running.”

  • I,ve been thinking, which my missus will tell you is never a good thing, we had two promotion seasons winnig most of our games including trashing ip5ich, last year we defied the so called experts and never got near the relegation zone, so we're missing the glory days. I don'think we could have attracted a much better manager and given the money he has available C H isn't doing a bad job. So lets not add to his problems, stop moaning and start supporting.

  • I just knew somebody would do the fish\cod thing, B Inners! So what DOES he really mean? Cash On Delivery? Carry On Diving? Short for CODeine?? I really want to know. Help!! ;-) I thought that the Piranha was a South American freshwater fish, so now I`m really confused. I mean, if a Piranha could survive the North Atlantic salt water, it`d eat the cod, wouldn`t it? That would make for even more of a shortage and we`ll all end up eating battered, bleached, reprocessed horsemeat `n` chips. Assuming we`re not already.

  • To be fair to Little Benno, he is being played out of position on the left which does not do him any favours at all. He reminds me of Walcott when he first got into Arsenal's team on the right wing. He looked very accomplished at Peterborough so perhaps he will become a good striker like that other bloke from Arsenal did.

  • Btw, CanaryWest, I hope we can get away with fewer than 4 wins, though there are surely at least 4 `winnable` games. 2 wins, 3 draws, total 38 points might just be enough? Or nine 0-0 draws? Fingers crossed. There`s still the KK - Lucifer Effect to kick in. Start with Everton, I have a bet on for a 2-1 City win.

  • I dont see the point in the endless stream of articles with players saying we will be ok and will stay up. I mean, what player is going to say "we are really struggling and if we dont pulll our socks up we could get relegated". A few weeks ago we needed 4 wins out of our remaining 21 games which seemed very achievable. Now its 4 wins out of 12 which is still achievable much much harder.

  • I agree with CanaryWest, but at least some of the postings are fun! Thanks mjc for explaining the COD thing. Still not absolutely sure I understand! The thought of piranha getting into the North Sea and up to Naaaridge via Breydon water is a tad alarming. Also, it might make our offshore project on Scroby Sands less attractive! I respect Lobbo`s view on little Benno, but like waclor, I don`t think that "wide left" position suits him. I used to think that maybe he`d become a full-back in the Ashley Cole style. He`s too young to write off - the coaching staff need to make sure young players` development is not stunted.

  • Hi, Scrimmage. A reference to beer! My eyes lit up! I visited the Hop Back Brewery in Downton, near Salisbury, about 15 years ago, to write a review article for a Brewing Publication. The first thing that struck me about the brewery was that it didn`t actually have a "Hop-back", the traditional giant "colander" for sieving out whole hops. Instead they used ground hop pellets and a settlement technique, quite commonly used in many breweries, usually bigger ones. Btw, what does "FTW" mean? My current favourite beer is "Trawlerboys", brewed in Lowestoft by Green Jack Brewery. Delish!

  • Hello, B Inners, I spent a brief spell in Ely. Traditional annual holiday was visiting distant relatives..... in Ely. Or going on a cruise to Littleport. Btw, have you tried that "Rauchbier" brewed by Green Jack in Lowestoft - "Red Herring"? A few gills of that would bring the colour to your cheeks!. I used to live near Stowmarket, too. The Stowmartians took a bit of getting used to, too! OTBC. ;-)
