Norwich City goalkeeper Declan Rudd has joined League One outfit Preston North End on loan until the end of the season.
The 22-year-old Academy product, who played in City’s shock FA Cup defeat against Luton on Saturday, was hoping to get that match out of his system last night, with Preston having a league game scheduled at Crawley.
But heavy rain meant the fixture was postponed an hour before kick-off, meaning a wasted journey to Sussex for Rudd who will now be hoping to making his debut on Saturday when Preston play host to Shrewsbury.
Graham Westley’s side recently released the experienced Steve Simonsen and Thorsten Stuckmann played in their most recent game, a 2-2 home draw with Coventry City. Rudd will now be battling with the German for a place in the starting line-up.
The youngster has had few opportunities to impress since joining the professional ranks at Carrow Road, with Fraser Forster, John Ruddy and now Mark Bunn blocking his route into the first team.
Since making his debut as a substitute at Gillingham in September 2009, after Forster had been sent off, he has only played the occasional game and manager Chris Hughton will be hoping he gets regular first team football at Deepdale.
Under contract with the Canaries until July 2014, Rudd has a total of 18 first team appearances to his name, with the majority coming in cup competitions. He has played three times for City this season, featuring in the 2-1 Capital One Cup win over Scunthorpe and the 3-0 FA Cup victory at Peterborough before Saturday’s embarrassing home defeat against Conference opposition.
“I am really happy I have completed my loan move. My target is to play first team games on a regular basis,” Rudd told Preston’s official website,
“It is a fantastic opportunity to join a big football club and I can’t wait to start training and working hard.
“As a young player it is important to have new experiences and play under different managers. Norwich City have recruited another goalkeeper in this window (Lee Camp) so it has given me the opportunity to go out and play and experience regular first team football.”
Norwich City have confirmed their first fixture in a three-game USA summer tour will be against Mexican side Club Dorados de Sinaloa in Sacramento on July 18.

Hooray. Will be interesting to see if he is seen as No.1 @ Preston and how he gets on. Also where in the pecking order he`ll be when the loan finishes - depending on whether or not Camp is only staying until the end of this season, and whether Ruddy is a transfer target. Good luck, Declan.

Good deal for Rudd ( and city ), this guy will be better than Bunn or Camp but needs a bit more first team practice ( not in premiership pressure cooker ). Loads of rumours down here in the smoke on transfers, Hooper, Bowditch, Curtis Davies, et al. Plenty of committment tomorrow please, and for the potential 6 pointer at Loftus Road on Saturday!!
