Leroy Fer’s £10m transfer to Queens Park Rangers has been confirmed by Norwich City, with the Canaries describing the move as a ‘club record transfer agreement’.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

News leaked at the weekend that QPR were on the verge of signing the Holland international midfielder and it was reported yesterday that the 24-year-old was in London for a medical with the Premier League new boys.

City have now confirmed the deal has been completed, with a statement on the club’s official website reading: “The club would like to place on record its thanks to Leroy for his services and wish him well for the future.”

Officially the fee has been reported by both clubs as being undisclosed but it is understood QPR will pay £8million and the balance linked to the terms of Fer’s original move 12 months ago from FC Twente. City are also believed to have negotiated a 20% sell-on clause for any future transfer of the powerful midfielder.

Fer has signed a three-year deal with the Rs and been handed the number 10 shirt at Loftus Road.

Rangers manager Harry Redknapp told his club’s official website: “Leroy’s arrival is a massive boost for us. He’s another excellent signing and I’m delighted we’ve been able to get him to QPR.

“He played for Holland in the World Cup this summer and has all the attributes you’d be looking for from a central midfielder.

“He’s just an outstanding midfield player – great physique, fine ability, he gets box-to-box. I’m really looking forward to integrating him into the squad.”

Fer, who applauded all four sides of Carrow Road after a substitute appearance in City’s 3-0 win against Watford, told his new club’s website: “I can’t wait to get started here. It was always my dream to stay in England, in the Premier League. QPR did well last season to come up and the squad is full of top players, so I’m delighted to be here.

“Harry told me I was a big target for him and when you hear that from a coach, you want to work with them and play for them.

“I’m just looking forward to showing what I’m capable of here at QPR.”

The transfer continues a busy afternoon for the Canaries, following the signing of former Rangers and Aston Villa defender Carlos Cuellar on a free transfer and the announcement of a new contract for centre-back Michael Turner.

Cuellar, 32, has signed after being released by Sunderland earlier in the summer and signs a one-year deal, with an option for a further year.

While Turner’s new deal extends his contract with the Canaries through until the summer of 2016.

  • £10m for a player who hasn't figured too greatly since his arrival is sound business. He's a good player when he fancies it, but it's not as if his impact on games is going to be missed here is it?

  • These transfer fees are a minefield to understand. When we signed Fer was any mention made of paying another £2m to Twente Enschede. I never read of it. The fee paid varied between £4.8m and £7.8m. Now the fee received has the same variations. In response to Kris we do have an agreement between Stew and Steady after two years of hostilities. There is hope in the Middle East.

  • Like many I would have liked to have seen Fer stay and prove his worth in Championship but I had a niggling concern that with the previous injuries, he may have suffered more injuries as this league is certainly more physical. Players look after players or rather players' agents look after players, after the World Cup the thought of non-PL action would be hard to swallow and at the end of the day why keep someone who wants to go.Having read many posts of late I think there is a degree of realism creeping in, in so much we are not in the PL anymore and we need the type of players in the squad to gets us back there. The matter of money is interesting in so much that the transfer fees are highlight but the package is not. There was a point raised that CC had been on trail at Blackburn and they didn't want him, CJ had a potential move to Celtic and both end up here, could it be that the board are using some money it making the personal terms more attractive and hence that may also keep Redmond etc. At least with CC we have him on a freebie not like Harry paying money for an injury prone CB in Rio! If we spend all the transfer income on players do we have the wherewithal to meet their personal terms? After Wolves I was in the negative camp but latterly getting more realistic and the results have certainly helped there, long may they continue! OTBC

  • "Good business" as McNally keeps telling us. But as we leak quality and bring in 32 year old freebies I wonder how long we can dilute the talent base and still be a Promotion candidate. It seems obvious that we are crying out for a centre back of quality and stature to anchor the back four, but that would require a sea-change in attitude from the cheap McNally who consistently proves that he wants something for nothing.

Let alone the twins etc....Woukd be more disappointed if we sell RedmondRuddy n Cruncher than Hooper as Redmonds movement n link up play was outstanding last night,n seems to be finding his feet....Crunchers goal was prem class n the defence plays better with Ruddy behind them than any stand in keeper we have used...Hoops would be a loss if we needed him in the first team, but at the moment, the attack n supporting midfield are on fire!

  • Sorry to see Leroy go, but what a fantastic price. Also, cast your minds back to the medical we had done on him when he signed for us + the consultant's report which said that his career would probly end prematurely because of his weak knee. We've got a healthy sell-on clause in there too, so all bases covered. Lets sell Redmond now + have done with it. He's got pace, but not much else. We really should cash in on all the silly money we can get. I'm enormously impressed by Grabber + Laffs + they only cost a few million each. Small change in today's transfer market. So let's buy a couple of good solid no-nonsense defenders + we'll be able to compete against anyone in this division. OTBC !

  • Agree with Andy. We have some narrow minded and rather thick supporters commenting on here. First up Fers contract cannot be "enforced". The club don't own him and he is always entitled to buy himself out of it - which QPR have done for him. It's better that it's done with the clubs blessing or they'll get a bad reputation with the PFU and find it harder to sign players of his calibre again. Secondly Delia Smith owns the club. She doesn't run it, that's McNallys job. She can't walk away, step down, quit or anything else. She has to sell. And why the hell should she when she's put so much into the club? Thirdly: no, Redmond isnt as good as Fer but he's considerably younger and has a LOT of potential. Adams recognises potential (Murphy, et al?) and so does McNally which is why Stokes offer was turned down. The money this club now has is enough not just I secure it's future for many years to come, will also ensure we are able to compete at the top of this league. The PL alone is not enough to sustain a yo yo club like us. Last time we were relegated we had millions of debt, disappeared to the foot of the Championship and got relegated to League One. Whilst obviously never a complete certainty , the likelihood of this happening this time is very , very low. I'd happily have a few seasons out of ten in this league if I was confident that the remaining 7 out of 10 were in the Prem. Relegation does not have to be a disaster, and it looks like the people running the club are ensuring that is the case. We only need a squad good enough to get us promoted. We don't NEED World Cup scorers in this league. Look at Alex ferguson's last season with Utd. Rubbish football, poor squad by PL champions standard and yet he had enough to win it anyway.

  • Your measured tone and objectivity do you credit Andy, but surely the issue is: Does NCFC have to sell or not? Plainly all the noise about how NCFC is a buying club and not a selling club and that it in essence it is really a Premiership club is just that, noise. The reality which most supporters are not able to accept is that with a home gate max of 26,000 and no middlefar eastern or Russian sugar Daddy to pay the bills NCFC is at best going to be a bouncing club rattling between the bottom of the Premiership and the Championship. There is no disgrace in being in that position, many clubs in the football league would give their eye teeth for such a state of affairs. Our problem as NCFC supporters is that it plays hell with the nerves. My hope is that game day will be less of a psychological damaging roller coaster than it was last season.

We would have gone into administration had she not have done so. Similarly DM has helped to drag us out of that position and although we dropped into L1, we have had some good times since - CH excepted but I am not sure we know who really led on that one. I think many of the comments about them are unwarranted. How many other such people around the country have done better??? A great many of them would have been happy to do the same.

  • We perhaps need a dose of realism here. NCFC are club that has just been relegated and with an inexperienced manager - NOT a criticism of NA. That is likely to prove unattractive to up and coming players for now and as has been said they are thin on the ground anyway. If come January we are in the top two, it will be much easier to recruit young players with ambition. Might also be why we got nothing last January with CH and our record. I am happy with Grabban and Lafferty and if NA has recruited more of the same quality and effectiveness, that sounds like good business to me. Give them a chance and our SUPPORT! Meanwhile, best wishes to LF.

Imagine Fer on a cold November evening in the rain at somewhere like Rotherham with little protection from the referee. I agree with other posts, however, that we need to spend some big bucks as a sign of intent to the rest of the division. We're rising up the league and should brush aside the donkeys on Saturday to continue good progress. OTBC.

The manager is carefully constructing a team of strong, tall and box to box players with adequate backup for if they get injured. This includes the goal scorers he has signed which are again imperative in this league. A lot of credit must go to the manager as what has been bought is a lot better than what has been sold, .... IN THIS LEAGUE..

Seemed like an OK bloke and he did OK when he was here - that's it. If Johnson and Tettey keep playing the way they are then Fer would have been a back up anyway. He is not worth £10m - a Harry and somebody else's money are easily parted.

  • @egypt- in defence of Dubai, many if us have concerns about the direction the board are taking us in at the moment..some express it more vociferously than others! My personal angst is that the board assured us we did not have to sell. Which is true..what they didn't tell us is that they WOULD sell. Since then,,they've gone very quiet..leaving an inexperienced manager to field all the questions, and cop the ensuing flak. I can't argue with the business.. Good money for bother Fer and Snodgrass. However, I don't agree with the view that we have to sell just because a player wants to go. Ambitious clubs hold on to players if they feel it's in the interests of the Club..and sell when the time is right for the club. We have 3 major assets left..Ruddy, Hooper , Redmond. If all 3 knock on NA's door tomorrow and say they want to go - do we just roll over? I'll say again, all this debate stops if the Board would show us just a little ambition in the transfer market. NA's made a promising start..give him a chance to keep it going

It didn't stop Van Gaal including him and playing him in the World Cup so someone seems to think he had potential. I wonder if the Board will enlighten us why they sold a player with three years left on his contract who the Manager wanted to keep and the famous words that we don't need to sell. For those of you who think £10m is good business it is , but how much will it cost to buy a player of his pedigree if we go back to the PL next year or to give us that extra push if we need it this season.

I bet McGnarly is glad we got another good win last night to take away the sour taste of this deal. As Fer is in demand why did we not hold onto him until the January transfer window ? If City were challenging for a top three place and looking good, he could have found some form and decided to stay anyway. If we have blown it by then, the chances are that 'arry and the fellow PL strugglers would pay appreciably more by then. Anyway it is done, hope some ££s finds it's way for NA's squad now !!

  • Over the summer, Leroy Fer's popularity amongst NCFC has increased dramatically - during which he didn't even play a game for the club! This is a classic case of improving (in the fans eyes), without even playing!! If I'm honest, I thought he was a bit lazy last season, particularly after a decent opening 3 months. Had he not gone to the World Cup, I think we would have struggled to get our money back (around £4.5m). In the event, thanks to about 15 mins appearance and 1 goal, his appearance in Brazil has probably doubled his fee. Not a problem in my eyes and I won't forget his poor attitude in many games between Dec and May last season - aprpeciate he wasn't the only one however. Oh, and it looks like QPR were bidding against themselves as it doesn't seem that there were any other serious contenders in for Fer. We move on, snap the cheque out of 'Arry's hands "thank you very much" and make for dust our of South Africa Road. otbc

Balance linked. etc, etc. Holland is not the Netherlands. North and South Holland (woodland - Holt -> `holtland` as in Holz=wood) are part of the Netherlands. Holland refers only to those western coastal provinces. Then, to Archant, Estonia is in The Balkans. This is a "club-record" drum that won`t be beaten for too long. We are expected to forget.
