Neil Adams did not feel let down by Norwich City’s collapse at Manchester United but the Canaries’ chief insists his players must respond for the Premier League finale.
City will potentially need points from Chelsea and Arsenal and rely on a stumble from Sunderland to stand any chance of completing a great escape after slipping into the bottom three on goal difference over the weekend.
Norwich survived for 40 minutes at Old Trafford before conceding four goals either side of the interval in an eighth consecutive away league defeat.
“I wouldn’t say let down by them. They have been fantastic from day one for me,” said Adams. “They haven’t let anybody down. It is simply a case that we have to do things better than we did in that second half performance which wasn’t good enough. Players have to look at themselves. They need to motivate themselves and first and foremost they have to look in the mirror. They were fantastic at Fulham and Liverpool and we have seen enough in a short period of time to feel we have enough in the changing room. It is alright saying that, we have to deliver. We allowed a good Man United team too many opportunities to hurt us and they did.
“The disappointing thing is after the first 40 minutes if you can get in at half-time 0-0 then we can have a look at it. To go in 1-0 down is tough but it was always going to be a really difficult after that second goal.”
Adams insists Norwich can only focus on Chelsea and Arsenal after a third loss since he replaced Chris Hughton.
“What is done is done. It’s a two game season,” he said. “We have to be ready and we will pick the players up and they have to pick themselves up. Let’s give a good account of ourselves. We can’t beat ourselves up and think we are in big trouble, but we know this is a tough situation. We have two games we are capable of getting something, albeit that is hard to say after the second half performance (at United). We will be right for the next game and the one after that. It is not in our hands but we have to pick up points to stay in this division. It is as simple as that.”
