Norwich City boss Neil Adams aims to play it cool in the Ipswich derby cauldron

Neil Adams will demand Norwich City play with their heads rather than their hearts to combat the intensity of an East Anglian derby against Ipswich.

Adams is braced for a white-hot atmosphere at Portman Road in the first cross-border skirmish since City’s 5-1 Championship win in 2011.

“I’ve played in many of these and it is 100mph from the start. Both teams want to get off to a good start and if you don’t keep your discipline you can pick up early cautions and red cards,” he said. “You don’t want players getting needless early bookings or worse because that puts you under pressure.

“We have to be careful of that; as much as we don’t want to go too far the other way and be cautious. We need to start strongly and be as intense as we can, while maintaining the discipline.

“We would rather this game was taking place in the Premier League, of course, but I don’t think it makes any difference the fact it comes so early in the season. We feel we are a Premier League-size club with a top flight fan base and we need to be back up there, so we have to win these type of games.”

The City manager is confident he has the heavy armour to compliment the creativity should Ipswich look to try and disrupt the visitors. Alex Tettey’s burgeoning double act alongside Bradley Johnson has been a key factor in two home victories.

“I think the pair of them have been on top form,” said Adams. “The two have complimented each other very well.

“Bradley has a really powerful shot in training but we’ve obviously seen the two dinks in those recent games but with Alex being in there he has a little bit more licence to get forward when we are attacking.

“With Bradley’s shooting ability in and around the box we have a dangerous weapon and Bradley himself probably feels with Alex in the team he has that insurance behind him.”

  • I didn`t want to pick up on the missing apostrophe, cutty. I value your top quality contributorship far too much. Also, I`m trying to cast off my reputation for pedantry and nit-picking. I am trying to become a reformed character and, as such, my aim is to take over Dubya`s role as Primo Pollyanna Person. He, in turn, has already stolen my arch-cynic role, while LincsCan has issued a warning about my invasion of his Statistics Fiefdom... Richard Gardiner\NZTractor, I hope your world has not been turned upside-down by that result. ;-) Steely; my return to Billybob land was notable for the ostentatious self-glorification of pseudo sentimental Charity freaks grossing out on a `Help the Heroes` event. In the words of the fragrant Germaine Greer, "for ****s sake, write a cheque".

  • You're right Brew I can't tell my apostrophe from my hyphen when I get too excited.

  • Shall celebrate the win with a couple of pints of Fisons Best in the Red Monkey after the match. Hope that Billy-Bob is not on the door.

  • Hi everyone. This NZ-based Ipswich fan is looking forward to a cracking derby game today. I think Town will edge it but the Canaries obviously have a better squad on paper. Just think that we will want (and need) to win it more.

  • Rumours on the web that City have agreed a fee for central midfielder Vadis Odjidja-ofoe of FC Brugge in Belgium as a Fer-replacement. Anyone heard anything else along these lines?

  • ... but you DID hyphenate your brother-in-law, cutty. Twice!! You`re undergoing meltdown in the intense heat of today`s big event. I`m going to watch the event on TV in a Naaridge pub. Early kick-off means I can see the whole game and still get a bus back to Billy-Bob land, Rednecksville, NR12. ;-) OTBC.

  • "We need to win these type of games". Against lower half of the table opposition, I couldn't agree more. 4-1 City.

  • You're up and about early Brew. I'm getting a few chores done first thing then off to the brother-in-laws to watch the game on Sky. See both managers are trying to keep a lid on it, giving the right amount of respect without bigging up the opposition. What a change from last season.

  • I suspect that Adams' cool may only last till kickoff and then he'll be as heated as the rest of us. 100% will be needed from first to final minute today. This is where City heroes are made.

  • Complements, Paddy. Also good to hear that Brad & Tetts are saying nice things about each other... Who would ever have believed Bradders would draw such fulsome compliments about his shooting ability? What a difference a change of manager makes; talking the player up. Good on ya, Neil!
