Chris Hughton deflected the praise for Norwich City’s battling 2-0 Premier League win at West Brom firmly onto his players after surviving a second half onslaught.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Gary Hooper struck before the interval from Leroy Fer’s pass before the Dutch midfielder sealed the win in the final seconds to earn the Canaries a second Premier League win on the road this season. Hughton was delighted with the collective response to fresh adversity after a 5-1 Premier League midweek defeat at Liverpool.

“It was the ideal response and it had to be from the players after the Liverpool game because you do not have much opportunity to prepare,” he said. “I don’t know if it was the perfect away performance because that would be not to have put ourselves under so much pressure in that second half but in some ways, yes, especially with a clean sheet. It was the type of game in that second period where they would either get a draw or a win or we were going to break away and get that second one and that is how it panned out.

“I was delighted with the clean sheet. They have a lot of forward players and it was a really difficult period after the interval and when you have that you are looking for people to stand up. I felt we always had that. We had plenty of opportunities to break as well, particularly through Nathan (Redmond), and we were always capable of getting a second one but the longer that didn’t come you put yourself under pressure and they were always going to go for it.”

Baggies’ boss Steve Clarke was left to rue his side’s lack of precision after laying siege to John Ruddy’s goal following the half-time introductions of Shane Long and Saido Berahino.

“We created a lot of chances but we didn’t get the goal and we made it a difficult afternoon conceding the first goal which came from a throw-in in the Norwich attacking third,” he said. “It was a soft goal and it gave them something to hang onto. We created enough chances but we never got the goal that would turn the game in our favour.

“I made the changes at the break but I still thought we had a good control of the first half and created chances, if not as many, as we did in the second half. It is always easy to sit back with hindsight and say you should have done this or that. The team that started was good enough. We had to risk a bit at half-time and that is what we did. The game started as we felt it would. It was two teams who had not been in the best of form. You had two teams feeling each other out but Norwich got the first goal out of nowhere and that put us on the back foot and set us back.”

  • I started supporting NCFC in 1957, and have always wanted the best for the club as a loyal supported who is now living overseas. Just because I left the UK does not make me any more of less of an NCFC supporter who wants the club to do well, and yes, is frustrated if they don't. We have seen with Lambert what a good dynamic manager can do to get a club to punch above its weight, and we have seen recently what not so good managers do with CH, Roeder, etc. I want the best for NCFC and at this time that means another manager who wants and know how to make his name with a smaller club. And while we are on the subject of Californian wine - Carlo Rossi Rhine for 12 dollars a gallon in Michigan. May not win any awards with the connoisseurs, but very drinkable!! Based on my last visit to Norwich this summer, cheaper than the beer!!

More Slovenes own their houses mortgage free than the Uk as a percentage of population. In fact a high proportion have two houses. 2. Most houses are insulated on the outside of the brick or concrete structure meaning they insulate the houses much more efficiently from extremes of temperature. Something I notice is only just started to be done in third world Uk

  • Cannot believe some fans. Yes, you might want him out - I'm on the cusp of it myself. But after each win I think he should be cut some slack. We can't win all games comfortably or beautifully. With the confidence as shot as it has been we're lucky to get any wins. But 3 wins in 5 could be start of a good run for us, and if so, then for me Hughton is doing the job, albeit in very boring, limp and unattractive fashion. That said, I thought hughton's comment " They have a lot of forward players and it was a really difficult period after the interval" is funny.... I feel like saying "See Chris - more forwards on the pitch make it difficult for the opposition - why don't we try it!"... but we won yesterday, so I can't complain.

Without someone wide left, poor Olsson got a real chasing. Give the manager some credit. Bassong was having a nightmare run = got dropped. Martin's form has also fallen dramatically = got dropped. Fortunately, Ruddy, who has also been way below par, was back to his best yesterday. Perhaps we were due a little walk with Lady Luck, but I am sure no one is expecting her to be waiting in the tunnel next week. Enjoy it for what it was guys.

  • We certainly appeared to ride our luck yesterday but I give CH credit for making changes to his defence after the previous embarrassment. 3 wins in 5 games is the form we need to be looking at to stay in this league that is for sure but I cannot help but think we were a tad lucky in the 2 wins at home as well. It is a shame that so many fans come on this board to slag off each other rather than talk about the game and the way forward. I am neither for nor against CH, I support NCFC and he just happens to be the manger right now. When we play badly he must expect critism and likewise when we play well, praise. I still think 4,4,2 works better for us than 4,5,1 and results tend to go along with that. Yesterday, he decided to go with Fer on the left as he probably realised that he did not deserve to be dropped but neither did Johnson or Howson, hence the team selection and it worked.

Such an important run of games coming up. Let's start by getting a win next Sunday against a Swansea team which has to play 3 games in 7 days which includes an away match in Europe. The Ipswich fans I know, hope that Hughton will keep his job so that we keep getting thrashed by all the clubs Hughton shakes in his boots over. I want to see Norwich on the up and up although I am realistic in my expectations. I do however know that in order to progress, the team need a manager and coaching staff who know how to organise a defence, set up a team and motivate players. Inconsistency in one of the obvious signs of poorly motivated players. That rules out the present incumbents.

Especially on that missed attempt from twelve yards out when their player(Sessegnon, was it?) shot it wide of Ruddy's left post when Ruddy was left out to dry. We gave the ball away deep in in our territory on several occasion and West Brom failed to capitalize. I'm excited we got the win but it seemed we were clearly outplayed. However, Hooper's finish was outstanding and Fer's composure on his goal was excellent, too. So give the boys some credit for taking their chances(few, they were) when they had the opportunity. It was good to see them hit the back of the net, wasn't it?

I suppose mathamatically it is better to take the points of the relegation rivals but it is still hard to take getting our goal difference wrecked each time we play the top teams, could be bad for recruiting new players as well. I would still rather we won every week so I could moan at the weather and I still think Hughton is a liability.

I have supported the City for well over 50 years. Cannot afford to attend games now. I do not think that CH is right for the job. Nothing personal but his team is sub standard. This is the third season in the Premiership and we should be building and consolidating our position. I am sick and tired of hearing what a small club we are. Only Arsenal have never played in the lower divisions. Great clubs are made over years and with N City support, I feel that it is only lack of ambition by the club itself that holds it back. As for being expected to lose to the bigger clubs .Why? Many times clubs from lower divisions topple giants. Raising your own game is the key to this. The present N City team are poor but seem to lack the heart to run themselves into the ground every week. Football isn't rocket science. It is very simple. Hopefully the City will stay in the division but I feel that change of management and ideas are needed. Let's all stop bickering and have fruitful discussions.

  • Don't understand all the bickering on here. Hopefully we are all 100% behind NCFC wanting them to do well in the EPL. However, the club is in a very precarious position with our current manager and coaches. We are getting the odd shaky win, but being hammered by the better teams, and a shaky win yesterday does not hide the fact that we were totally outclassed by Liverpool and the two Manchesters - both of which have been given tough games by others at our level. To me this means we need improvement in both management and by the players themselves. A new strong manager who will demand more from the players and give them the tactics to give more, plus be able to make on the fly changes in tactics and substitutions as needed to match the opposition is an absolute must for an EPL club. Sadly, we currently do not have that. CH is a nice guy, was a good player, and maybe will do well in lower leagues. However we need someone now who is maybe not such a nice guy, but can capture the hearts and minds of the squad we have, and get 110% out of them for every game, plus make timely substitutions and formation changes. Please explain to me how any NCFC supporter can see it any other way?

  • I'll take the 3 Points and away win at WBA any day - well done guys, great result and these point all count at the end of the season. Good to see most people being realistic about our situation rather than sticking the boot into the manager (again). Fact of the matter is we are in a league where there are about 8 top clubs than can spend £200M to £300M a year on players and then there are the likes of NCFC who can perhaps spend £20M to £30M a year. Do the maths and work it out - we are never going to be able to play beautiful football AND get results against the like of the elite clubs. Look at Suarez's performance during mid-week, it was a masterclass, and these players are simple out of our (price) league. I am sure everyone who supports City wants PL status - and - who can complain about our current standing of 14th with 17 Points after 15 games ? It's Par for the course and whilst some of results, tactics and performances have been frustrating, there are several other PL clubs who have a lot more problems to think about than we do ! In the BIG BOYS league we have to accept that we are not the biggest fish in the pond, but, we get to see our boys play against the best in the world. The alternative is that we drop down the leagues and beat Bury 6-3 in every game - if that is what people really want ?

The defence looked a chaotic mess but kept a clean sheet. Lady Luck played a part but then perhaps it has averaged out with the Cardiff match. We all know that it will take a major financial setback to the mega clubs before a team like Norwich can compete with their buying power. However smaller clubs can get results against them. We got two brilliant home wins last season and Stoke and Hull have also had recent successes. To do so they have to have belief. Going into a match terrified and expecting to get thrashed will result in getting thrashed. This is not Norwich's first season in the PL and not Hughton's first season in charge. He is not getting the best from the players either tactically or by motivation and they are the prime objectives of the manager. He should be replaced.

Perhaps it could be argued that the team has overachieved the past two seasons and that this season is more a "law of averages" scenario. How many of our first team players would start for bigger clubs? Fer, Redmond and Ruddy are the only players from the last game that I can think of. This is the case for many other clubs in the division, as well. but my point is that we can't be expecting the team to be winning games easily. Hughton doesn't deserve to be judged on the premise that we're better than most teams in division, talent wise. We have gotten rolled by the bigger clubs this year, but we've also been in every game against teams that aren't pushing for a Champions League position.

CH has been in charge for long enough and been given more money to spend then any other time, and we are still hovering at the bottom of the table with inconsistent results and a couple of thrashing so to boot. I am sure that we ALL had better expectations this season then are current form has been. And as one person said the reason we post OUR opinions on here is because we care about our club. It's amazing that people get bent out of shape, and throw personal insults all because someone has a different view then theirs. I've said it before I want CH replaced that's just MY opinion. • I truly despair at some of our "fans". I wish I had a more accurate picture of the proportion of total fans the negatrolls on this board represent. I assume they are vastly over-represented, or at least I hope so. Surely the "average" fan would have been more or less happy with 17 points after 15 games (and only 5 behind Man Utd) if offered at start of season? Then again, I think back to some preseason posts and remember some suggesting Europe was possible. Seriously, some people need a bit of perspective. If people weren't so blinkered about CHs failings, they might be able to see today for what it was...a proper old school battling away performance. Sure, we rode our luck, but in fairness, we haven't had a lot so far this season, so maybe this is a turning point. Or maybe that happened a while back. What's that now? Three wins in last 5? That's pretty good form isn't it? And each time only papering over the cracks? Maybe the cracks aren't as wide as some people think (or even seemingly hope - which is what I find so disappointing).

I thought Ruddy played really well after some questionable performances this season, Redmond too look good and caused the WBA defense a good deal of worry. Well done Hughton on getting it right today with the tactics and player choice. Both manager and playes deserve praise. Let us hope this continues and the negative Neds stay away.

The term "Neyull" is one used a lot on twitter to describe people that call in the the radio Norfolk phone in that used to be run by Neil Adams. They would pick up the phone and first thing you'd hear is some old boy saying "Hullo Neyull!" The Barry call is superb, confused Norfolk old boy at its best. You had the one that berated Andrew Crofts who he then found out didn't play and admitted he fell asleep in his shed for most of the game. Our illustrious leader appears happy to win that way , he is blessed with the ability to forget about the abject performances his side produce every other game . Some people are happy with him , however others are not . Me I'm concerned about the shocking goal difference , and it is truly awful , when we lose we lose heavily and for the sake of our league status it has to be addressed, quickly. In response to those that seek only to insult , berate and question the support of others I say this . Always remember that Directors , Managers , Coaches and Players are like ships that pass in the night , the one constant about a football club where it has genuine loyalty and strength is it's supporters , us . Regardless of how you view the management , be it keep him or sack him , we really should be able to get past the childish insults .

More intent on vindicating your own silly opinions than enjoying a landmark two-goal away win. Pathetic. Doubtless you will feel a degree of self-righteous indignation reading this, but hey ho. Incidentally, play for the first goal was Redmond, Fer and Hooper to goal, second was Redmond to Fer to goal. Remind me who it was who got these folks to the club?

I was not pleased with CH's decision to drop Hooper for the Liverpool game and felt it was deeply negative but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt as he was sharp today when it really mattered, maybe the better for being rested midweek.I still have my doubts about Mr H but would love to be proven wrong and feel he has earned the right to take us into the new year. With the games coming up I do feel we have a big chance to climb the table and will happily eat the words I uttered on wed!! On another fascinating note there was an article on John Ruddy that ran on my local radio 15 mins ago (I live in Baltimore USA) The commentator was basically saying he is England's biggest hope in Brazil and will be our savior!! I hope this all comes true after he has a fantastic 2nd half to the season culminating in us winning the FA Cup and staying up !!! Please, I can dream right, it's what football is about. OTBC

  • Quite correct to give the credit to the players. Hughtons tactics contributed zero to the win. We showed no change of tactics at all from the last 3 away debacles. IMO I just do not see what Elmander brings to the team and Hoolahan must have been so disappointed after his 2 recent good performances. The game was crying out for Hoolahan to come on after 60 minutes. However, even more bizzare was the decision to play Fer on the left of midfield. He looked like a fish out of water, gave no help to poor Olsson and playing him there also meant we were missing our best player in the middle of the park. On another day we could literally have lost that game 0-7 AGAIN as we allowed WBA even more shots on goal than we did at Man City. Seriously WHERE is the changeimprovement in tactics? It was a great win but we are not going to get away with that every week. If we carry on playing like that we will see more 0-4 and 0-5 scorelines than we do wins. However yes WELL done to the players, especially to John Ruddy who I am glad to say seemed back to his absolute superb best.
