Chris Hughton insisted his 10 men had suffered rough justice in a stirring Premier League 1-1 draw at Sunderland.

The Norwich boss focused primarily on the handball incident involving Wearsiders’ left-back Danny Rose as his major source of frustration in a contentious Sunday afternoon tussle at the Stadium of Light. Canaries’ keeper Mark Bunn was red-carded 30 minutes into the game after he was adjudged to have handled outside his penalty area. Sebastien Bassong was then found guilty of the same crime inside the visiting box when he conceded a first-half spot- kick despatched by Craig Gardner to cancel out Wes Hoolahan’s opener.

But it was Rose’s illegal intervention in blocking Russell Martin’s driven low cross that irked Hughton entering the final quarter of a gripping contest.

“The frustration for me is one is given and one isn’t. I know the sending-off is the biggest decision because it puts us down to 10 men but the two penalty incidents have frustrated me the most,” he said.

“The Danny Rose incident is clearly inside the box. Even if Seb’s is handball, the (Sunderland) lad is in an offside position and the assistant is looking right along the line. He makes the decision on the handball but not the offside fractions before.

“I haven’t had a chance to speak to the officials and that is normal after the game because the frustrations are high and you really want to be clear about what you are saying.”

Hughton delivered an honest assessment when pressed for his verdict on the two first-half incidents which checked Norwich’s early momentum.

“No doubt the sending-off will be analysed further over the next day or two but I did fear when I saw Mark Bunn come out of his goal because there was always a risk,” he said.

“Whether it was intentional or not you don’t know but speaking to him he is adamant the ball hit him underneath his arm. You just run the risk.

“With the Bassong one if it is deemed as handball, what is certainly also the case is the lad has come from an offside position and that is the same assistant who gives the penalty decision.

“One thing I have been able to see from my position is the Danny Rose one.

“Initially I wasn’t sure if it was handball, but I did know he was in the box. So it hasn’t been a good day for us regarding decisions, but it has been in terms of what resilience my team showed.”

Hughton was proud of the way Norwich responded to sustained adversity in the north-east.

“Most will want to speak about the penalty decisions, but personally, the first thing I want to speak about is what my team gave,” he said.

“To be down to 10 men for as long as we were and to come out of it in normal play with the best chance of the game, when Grant Holt is through and if his first touch is a bit better he is on for a one versus one, says a lot. Sunderland of course had a lot of crosses and shots outside the box but I can’t remember a clear chance.

“You have to give credit to a group of lads who were desperate to get something out of this game.”

  • Being a bit of a wringer I need new cause to feel hard done by after being awarded our first penalty in nearly a year. My current gripe is that I suspect no other EPL team has as high a ratio ( 0.666 ) of goalies sent off ( 2 ) as penalties awarded ( 3 ) in the 68 games of our current top flight status. I get the impression the refs collectively don't like us!

  • The enforced absence of Pilks may give E.B the chance to stake his claim. I wonder if Hoots will persevere with the bizarre experiment of playing a right-footer on the right `wing` and.......... Elliott needs to grasp the opportunity. When Pilks is fit it may be lost, or maybe it`ll give Hoots a whole kaleidoscope of attacking options?

  • Yes, I think Pilks has done a lot more defending this season, Preston. I think he gives Garrido more protection than Cafu gets, `cos Snods seems to have a more attacking brief from Hoots. Still think Pilks has plenty to offer, but maybe a rest will clear up that injury for keeps?

  • Mostly agree Preston, as harsh as the Bunn decision seems. But, as well as the penalty that wasn`t there was the offside that wasn`t given and the resulting penalty that shouldn`t have been. Either way, we were denied the chance to retake the lead. I wonder if O`Neill can get Sunderland going before it`s too late for them? I hope not! - I think there will be the inevitable Wigan escape and there are signs that Soton and Villa are capable of getting a few more points. So we need to get a few more, too - not rely on the Mackems or anyone else to self-destruct. On Saturday`s showing, the team can do it! (Refs permitting).

  • The "missed" tackle at Wigan makes our officials look competent! Shades of Muskrat on Bellamy there. If Bunn puts his arms where they can block the balll then its handball. All started with carelessness form Turner. Carelss work bt Bassong cost the penalty, He diid not need to chest it. BUT overall Turner Bunn and Bassong have been immense this year, I am now prepared to forgive Turner for his nightmare performance against Fulham at the start of the season. We are proving hard to beat and the points are slowly clocking up. Shame wigan won from a blatant handball that their lino didn't see - in fact that lino didn't see much all afternoon.

  • That`s so true, goldie. I suppose, in the Everton game we should`ve been dead & buried but they didn`t finish us off, we hung in and nicked it. 3 luvverly, juicy points. Then a jammy penalty vs Soton gifted us more but it was missed. That showing at Sunderland was deserving of a win. An obvious penalty not given would have brought justice - if it were to be converted! All exciting stuff. Be good to get safe, though. 3 points from Wigan should do it!

It was really good to see him played in his proper position, because he has one of the best crosses in our club, but not with his left foot or cutting inside. I would be interested to know how many assists he had last year. The other thing that he gives us is genuine pace that can frighten defenders. Hopefully, he might get another go against Wigan.

Credit where credit is due, Jonny Howson has been poor for the last couple of home games recently but was superb in midfield yesterday with Johnson. We came away with a precious point but should have been all three If we hadn't had to battle against poor decisions from the officials. Sunderland look as though they stand a good chance of being the third team to go!

  • The ref`s assistant was even worse, leslie! It was good to see a determined display by all the team. Russell Martin was a shining example and, at last, Jonny H looked like he`s back to a bit of form, on that showing. Wigan have started their Phoenix performance now, so it`s the bottom 2 that seem to be cut adrift. It is getting hard to call; 18th place could go to any team in the 10th-17th spots. I wonder if our "easiest" points might come from the likes of WBA & ManC?? It all depends on the refs, I suppose? :-(

I think that Bunn is clutching at straws by saying it only it him on the underside of the arm. That is irrelevant and yu hae to say there was movement towards the ball. My only real issue over the decisions was the penalty that wasn't. You only had to look at the relief on Rose's face to see that he knew he had gotten away with one. Anyway lets hope for a result at wigan.

Give the captain a chance to ask for it to be looked at maybe once or twice a half. If he,s wrong he loses a chance. It cuts out throw-ins, corners etc. I,m told most Referees would be glad if it happened in the major proffesional game.

Last season the only player who was a better crosser was Lappin. Pilkington is better at going past players and has two good feet and he has a better shot, but Bennett gets his head up more and is more accurate.
