Chris Hughton admitted Liverpool ruthlessly punished his side’s defensive failings in today’s 5-2 Premier League hammering at Carrow Road.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Luis Suarez grabbed his second consecutive hat-trick against the Canaries with Nuri Sahin and Steven Gerrard’s late deflected strike completing the rout - Steve Morison and Grant Holt’s second half goals giving the scoreline a gloss that flattered the hosts. Hughton had been acutely aware of Liverpool’s attacking threat, but insisted City contributed to their own downfall.

“What you can’t afford to do is gift them chances and we knew beforehand that we were coming up against a Liverpool team in good form,” said Hughton. “They moved the ball well and you cannot give them the opportunities we did. They were clinical today, I have to say, and (Luis) Suarez was at his most clinical but you cannot give them that time and space to score. That is the disappointment. We have conceded pivotal goals that really hurt us. The first one, so early in the game, and the second and third either side of half-time. The only positive is we managed to score two goals when it became really open. That is the only positive.

“We’ll make no excuses for today or the points we have got but we are at period when we are not able to convert our chances. Suarez had four chances and took three. (Steven) Gerrard’s fifth goal takes a deflection and goes in.”

Brendan Rodgers savoured his first Premier League win as boss of the Reds.

“I’m obviously content but not surprised,” he said. “Our performance level up until today has been very good, apart from at home to Arsenal and when we went down to ten men against West Brom. Our quality and the standard of our play was outstanding today.”

  • Some of the comments on here make me feel ashamed to be a Norwich supporter. Reality check needed.......it's so easy to look at last season through Lambert tinted glasses. But look at the last 2 games v same fixtures last season. This season 0 points. Last season 0 points. G Difference this season minus 4 last season minus 4. I was at both Liverpool games and they outplayed us both times, especially Saurez! Performance yesterday was poor, but it was right across the team, not just the new signings. All of the players who were here with King Lambert last season were also poor yesterday, with none deserving a rating of more than 6. But obviously this all Hughtons fault - has nothing to do with fact, that it was already going down hill second half of last season, and PL saw that the second season was going to be very very tough, so jumped ship. So all we have to do is sack Hughton after just 6 games, get someone else in, and these players will transform into world beaters, and qualify for Europe. Our recent history should warn us that sacking a manager, does not bring the miracle recovery that - in fact it can make matters much, much worse. Perhaps the time to take real stock, is if we fail against the other lesser teams, and yes I know Liverpool were below us, but do we all really believe they are relegation candidates.

  • Benali, to say the people worrying about the future and stating concerns with the new management need to grow up is absurd. This is a results based business, there is no hiding from the fact that Chris Hughton is negative, he admitted himself he didn't bring Hoolahan on against West Ham because he didn't want to concede from set pieces (poor reason). Some of us non armchair fans know what the team are capable of given last season and the fact that we haven't lost any major players since then proposes the question of what's happened? The only major change has been the management. It's all good and well saying he needs time but what if it continues?! It's worth so much money and pivotal to the future of our football club for us to stay in this league. Just think what would have happened if we gave Bryan Gunn more time, worrying thought.

  • If a manager looks as if he's doing the right things but the results don't come, that is one thing. However what Hughton did before the season started looked wrong eg buying a fourth goalkeeper, buying all those midfield players and weakening rather than strengthening the strikeforce. The results we all feared are now happening. Add to this his praise of Wes, MOTM last week and then dropping him, uninspired tactics, illogical substitutions and the performance of some of his signings and what conclusion can you come to? I fear Hughton is way out of his depth.

  • goldie, just to give you a little education, Leeds is the capital for ISP providers in the UK so we have quite a few computers, we are not a town but a City. Finally you want to know why there are so many Leeds posters on here now? answer is we were flooded with Norwich posters when Howson and Snodgrass joined you gloating at what you had signed. What you as a club will now have discovered is that when the going gets bad the two of them disappear. Snodgrass will have a good run of up to 5 games then disappear for 10. As they say the chickens (or turkeys in your case) have come home to roost you have signed to slightly above average Championship players. Maybe you should be congratulating your board on their foresight the second season in the Premiership was always going to find you out at least now you have a squad that will save you from relegation in the Championship next season.

We've had a relatively easy start to the season if you look at the teams played compared to others. Very, very deflated and it just doesn't look like Hughton carries round that little something extra, that character to get the best out of us, to fuel the players full of determination and adrenaline, that little something extra to get our season going, whereas managers like Lambert and Rodgers do. Hughton has evidently made bad choices, sending Vaughan out, bringing in Turner and Bunn, subbing our most influential players. He needs to get a grip or get his coat.

The only major change since last year is the Management Team so that says it all. After defeats last year I was always confident we would bounce back, sadly this is no longer the case and you can also see this on players faces. You don’t win games by keeping you best players on the bench. At least 4 of our subs on Saturday should have started! Its no only on the picture Hughton appears clueless, but some of his off the field work defies belief. Bunn why? Send Vaughan out on loan with no call back option why? Board said it has a post Lambert plan, time to put into action a post Hughton plan and give Harry a ring please Mr McNally

So far we have played 6 won nil and now 2nd from bottom. He says we shipped too many goals last season and has to make us more solid. So far we have shipped 13 goals averaging more than 2 a game and last season we finished 12th. Someone should remind him that the object is to score more than the opposition. With the quality of our players the only way is the PL way ,push up deny space run your bxxxcks off and set out to win.His way to contain will at best make us draw specialists and back to playing second rate sides like Leeds .

Yesterday of the three promoted sides plus Norwich, 16 players played who had played in the Championship, Norwich played 9 of those. Norwich you are out of youre depth, and rather than being the boards fault, it is the boards duty to come clean. Either they want to play premiership football and invest in players, or they are happy taking the premiership pay checks and quite happy to sink back to there own level. youre next game is at Chelsea, they will hammer Norwich. You will be bottom after that and in all honesty, i cannot see you getting off the bottom. Youre hero Lambert is to blame, hes a championship manager, not premier class as he's already shown at Villa

  • How quickly things change in football. All the good things Lambert built at City have been undone - we are a club in free fall, who are becoming the whipping boys of the PL. When this team plays at its best it can't win - when it does not turn up it gets thrashed. Some Managers work with certain clubs - so don't that is a fact. Can CH turn this around, given time - you don't have time in the PL - a few more performances like this and we will be cut adrift from the rest and then we can kiss goodbye to the season.

Maybe because they could see he is not a Premiership Manager. Nothing wrong with keeping clean sheets which seems to be his main objective but we do not have the quality to contain the likes of Suarez which do not exist in the Championship. The only way is to be positive and take the game to the opposition and hope you score more than you concede. Give it a go .Play your creative players like Fox and Wes.That was PL's way to set out to win every game.not to avoid defeat. If it doesn't work at least go down flag flying ,not wimp out as we did under Worthington.

And as much as I sympathise with all those who have been saying that James Vaughan shouldn't have been loaned out, it's worth mentioning that he didn't play for Huddersfield today because he was injured. Which is why Town have brought in Jermaine Beckford as an emergency loan replacement.

If we are still in this predicament come Christmas then fair enough but the season is still young. The really worrying bit is CH stating right from the beginning that he had studied the team! If that is the case, then why isn't he playing the team to it's strength? Hope this doesn't become a regular problem. I think it's safe to say that Turner is a liability. The big clubs are all edging up the table with their points tally in double figures and the lower end is starting to adopt the position. City, Reading, QPR, Villa, Wigan and Southhampton already make up the bottom six. With the exception of Liverpool (who were outstanding today) - Sunderland, Stoke, West Ham and Swansea make up the lower - or struggling end of the table. It is not difficult to see that we are going to be firmly in the bottom, 3, 6, 9, 12 this season. On performances today, there is every reason to be pessimistic. If we stay up this year it will be a major success, we are going to be in a dog-fight on present viewing. OTBC

Now, after yesterday's mauling by Liverpool, there has to be something seriously wrong and I mean seriously wrong! I am very much of the idea that CH needs time to get his strategies across to the players; but when you drop one of your best players from the week before and fail to pick the likes of R Bennet, E Bennet and David Fox then keep Holt on the bench; either CH is completely out of his depth or his plans are taking far longer to implement. Yet, how can this team, that outplayed Spurs just a few weeks ago, be reduced to such a shambles in so short a time. I believe in being positive but even I am now very concerned as to where all this is taking us. And I think a decision needs to be taken sooner rather than later because I fear for our future at the moment! otbc

In addition to poor team selection and failing to bring in at least one quality striker when the window was open, Hughton's body language and lack of player motivation from the dugout rubs off on the players themselves. Bring in a QUALITY manager motivator before the situation becomes irreparable. It's a long way back if we drop out of the Prem. Shame Harry Redknapp Kevin Bond wouldn't lower themselves!! The trouble is that the decisions of Hughton before the season started suggested that we were looking at disaster. You know what they were: signing a glut of midfield players, not signing a striker, giving Vaughan away, wasting money on a fourth goalkeeper etc. He has carried on this lunacy by dropping the best player for the next match, weird substitutions and selections and using poor tactics. Sorry but harsh though it is the man is either an idiot or choosing to act like one.

Why did Lambert not come back to NCFC and buy any of his former players. easy because he knows that none of them are premiership quality. CH does not seem to have the passion the team needs to lift the players to perform above their ability. Much rather see a Lambert or Warnock, or ONeil jumping up and down on the touch line. Also if Turner was a good player why would an astute manager like ONeil sell him. thanks for nothing Martin!

Dreadful tactics combined with some very average displays equals this type of result. Sort it out CH, you bought most of these players and they are not performing. But they have not been given the games or minutes on the pitch that Holt has. this tells me Hughton is a Plan A merchant, we were awful in the first 45 and all he did was take off our one bit of pace in jackson. Until he gets his head around playing a team to provide service to our strikers, we will struggle to score and, like in every single game, our moves are breaking down far too easily because we're not committed in attack, we attack as a unit, we defend as a unit. Its funny how he's supposedly got us looking hard to beat, yet he signed micheal turner who couldnt buy a game at Sunderland because he was behind....Titus Bramble, and he doesnt even give Ward a squad number. A serious number of errors were made and the board should be looking at themselves long and hard for allowing this to all happen. Goals win games, not clean sheets, we proved that last year.

However, two of the six games we conceded FIVE goals. We are not scoring either. I will be the first to take back my comments but I do not see anything but a nightmare of a season unless things change. I do hope that CH can turn it around but clearly he has a negative approach. Spending money on a fourth goalie was just crazy when we already had adequate cover in this area. I see changing the manager or buying players in JanuaryXmas as too late unless CH suddenly takes some risks. the players are not responding to what ever it is he is doing. If we go down then fine but at least make sure you give it your best, clearly that is not happening at the moment.
