Norwich City boss Chris Hughton confirms interest in Kansas City’s Kei Kamara

Norwich City manager Chris Hughton has confirmed an interest in striker Kei Kamara, who is currently plying his trade in the United States.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

At today’s press conference ahead of the Canaries’ FA Cup fourth round tie at home to Luton Town on Saturday, Hughton said: “Kei Kamara is a player we’ve made enquiries about, but as far as anything more than that it is all I can tell you. He is one of lots of players we have enquired about. Some reach the public domain, you expect it these days, but generally 99% of what is in the media has no fact. Any progress or not will take place behind–the-scenes. All I will say is it’s an enquiry and that is the process which goes on week in, week out. If and when there is any definite news we’ll get it to you.”

Sky Sports claimed last night that the Canaries had made a bid for the 28-year-old, who has a good scoring record with his Major League Soccer club Sporting Kansas City.

Kamara is one of three players to score nine or more goals in each of the last three seasons and is thought to be in the last year of his contract with the MLS, who own the rights for the players.

Born in Sierra Leone, Kamara emigrated to the United States as a teenager and has spent the last eight years playing for various professional clubs, with Kansas securing his services from Houston Dynamo in 2009.

A full international for Sierra Leone with 14 appearances and two goals to his name, he had a trial with Stoke City in December but was not offered a deal.

Hughton refused to be drawn on a reported interest in QPR’s Scottish international Jamie Mackie, and the City boss was also tight-lipped regarding progress on potential moves for Celtic’s Gary Hooper and Swansea’s Danny Graham.

“They are names that got into the public domain and sometimes it is difficult to stop that. We are where we are on the (Hooper) one,” he said. “We are speaking about a player that is not our player. People now know what the facts are. Yes, there was a bid put in. The rest we will have to wait and see. Regarding anything that does get out we can’t control that. What I can control is what I tell you now. Anything we try to do is done in the best way and very much club-to-club. With him (Graham), it is similar to what I have just said, we try to do as much as possible in the appropriate way and that is another one that has made the public domain.”

You've got Steady On whose sole purpose is to be a catalyst for arguments, Ged Steroo the fake City supporter who berates the team at every opportunity, Liz Knott who may or may not be a girl but is simply on here to badmouth the team... I don't take anything Steady On says to heart as he is simply on here to stir things up and clearly has nothing better to do. Truth is were he to actually meet anybody chances are he'd be a meek idiot with no contribution to society - much like the other trolls. Haven't any of you got a bl**dy life or did you spend your youth hoping to one day grow up to be a keyboard warrior? As for Hooper I don't think it was ever truly on the cards, I guess there is more business to be done as yet though.

One thing that worries me about Kamara is his qualities being accentuated by poor opposition in the MLS, would be a big step from there to the physical nature and pace of the premier league. On the flipside of that though he could thrive on the challenge and be a success.

Surely there are players around in Championship, even Division One ( or the European equivalents ) who can do a job. We need to stay up this season, then build in the next campaign. And also, it's not a matter of fans acting like '5 year old little girls' it's a window full of debate, anxiety and comparison. It's only natural to feel a degree of anxiety when the teams around you have bolstered and strengthened their squad, and I must say it's unusual that it's been well over 3 weeks of the window and we don't seem close with anyone, considering last season on a smaller budget in a healthier position we had Howson signed soon in the window.

But okay, our rivals, around us we have Sunderland, particularly big signing in N'Diaye, West Ham signing Joe Cole, Newcastle with their multiple signings, and then mainly QPR in the bottom 3 also making signings. Also, yes it is a different window but the only way in we can compare them is to compare how healthy we were last season compared to this, and also what we have to lose. To say 'what should we do re-sign Howson' is a completely nothing point, the only reason we need to make additions is to improve the quality particularly in forward positions, and given how we've struggled in this winter-term and also our striker's injuries, it would have made sense to do the business early to make that player available for selection. And please, don't embarrass yourself by deliberately misquoting me.

  • Is it wrong that I spend longer reading the comments than the actual articles these days?! Worrying video song choice... do we know the code? It's not about the salary, it's all about reality and making some noise? Well, one more week to go so let's see what happens...

  • MLS player salaries are public information, try searching the same. At 210,00 Dollars per year, he is one of the highest paid in the league outside of likes of Beck's and Keane. While Im sure City can meet his money expectations, if he was Prem League or Championship standard, he would not be throwing himself at balls in Kansas. Dont think we are looking in the right places if there is any credability to the story.

  • Don't get me wrong, spanishcanary, I would rather have Hooper or Graham any day. My post was more a comment on the EDP's choice of video. Clearly his reputation is built around that miss but every player has an off day. Besides, if he get's better service in the PL, his ratio might improve. Anyway, it's all speculation at the moment.

  • No thanks to Becchio. Similar to Morison really. At least this Kamara looks to have some sort of pace and strength and should be cheap as he's nearing the end of his contract. Need another though - Mackie would be very good if we can persuade QPR and him

Please give examples how our rivals have strengthened massively against us? No-one has signed anyone yet because this is what happens every year in this window

  • Oh my word you are literally too stupid to talk to. I'm not saying we should be signing those players, I was proving that teams can buy strikers early on in the window after you said "In what world do you live where anyone can sign a striker early in the transfer window? Doesn't happen." You're embarrassing yourself!

I wonder if we have wasted too much time chasing the proverbial rainbow in Scotland? If we don't land a proven goalscorer by 1 Feb the writing is on the wall. But even if we do manage to get someone of note, Hughton will need to adjust the tactics to support him and give him the kind of service he likes and thrives on. Hasn't happened this season with Holt has it?

Look on the bright side, he may be an economy-priced Mario Balotelli looking at some of his celebtrations, especially the one where the "trust catcher" guy walks away from him.

As spanishcanary says, it`s about discussion - which certainly is NOT for the weak-minded, Steady On. Save vitriol for the trolls, not fellow fans! Switch off the Irony bypass equipment. OTBC.
