Chris Hughton is challenging his Norwich City players to have no regrets over the Premier League run-in.
The Canaries’ head to Aston Villa this weekend buoyed by a 1-0 win over Tottenham which moved them four points clear of the bottom three.
City have failed to build on previous positive results in an inconsistent campaign and Hughton has warned his squad they must capitalise on a hard-fought home victory over Spurs.
“It is only natural to look back at wasted opportunities which perhaps would have got us three or four places higher. But you have to look forward,” said Hughton. “Our only objective is to maintain the form we are in. We have had other opportunities and that has been the story of our season. The focus is on us now. We can not affect what is going to happen elsewhere over any given the weekend. There is a group in the same position as us and if you speak to any of those managers they will tell you it is about getting your own results right.”
Hughton has cited West Ham’s recent revival as something the Canaries can look to emulate, with the Hammers on a four-game winning run which included a 2-0 Upton Park victory against City.
“There isn’t a bigger example than West Ham and they have four games on the spin,” said Hughton. “We felt we were playing generally as well as them when we went there the other week, but they have got the balances right. It is good to get back to scoring goals because we have to be winning matches, as opposed to not digging deep and trying to avoid defeat. I can guarantee every game between now and the end will be tough, but we showed a lot of character against Tottenham.”
