Neil Adams insists his Norwich City players have a clean slate as he bids to plot a route back to the Premier League.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

City released their squad numbers earlier this week, with the likes of record signing Ricky van Wolfswinkel and last season’s team captain Sebastien Bassong notably handed different shirt numbers ahead of the new campaign, but Adams is not prepared to rule any player out of his plans at this early stage.

Republic of Ireland duo Wes Hoolahan and Anthony Pilkington both had limited opportunity to impress during his five-game stint in charge last season, but the Norwich boss has reiterated everyone knows exactly where they stand with him.

“I did that with all of them at the end of last season when I didn’t know if I was going to get the permanent position or not,” he said. “I felt even then you had to have a contingency plan. The players have let me know whether they want to be here or not and that will remain confidential but in terms of a clean slate everyone has an opportunity to impress.

“I wouldn’t want to be patronising and say I haven’t formed opinions on players. I saw them closely last season, both on and off the pitch, and that comes into my considerations but I am not foolish enough to think if there is one player who perhaps I thought might not be in my plans goes out and is the best lad we’ve got in that position then he will find himself in the team.

“We have got pre-season and five or six weeks now to have a really good look. The opportunity is there now for all of them.”

  • ......Canary on the moon!...Isn't it wonderful that we can enter into a discussion without having a fight at the end!....My views were that Snodgrass was a very large part of the problem with our style of play, and the results that we had!....We can't lay the blame for our relegation at the door of Becchio, Garrido, Pilkington or Hoolahan who hardly had a look in on the team sheet!....Therefore the reason has to lay elsewhere!....Can you come up with the answer? .....

  • MB, if by Cotman you mean me, you are wrong. Although I find your postings smug and self-obsessed, I know that you have a loyal (if small) fan base and have no interest in muscling in on your online friendship group. Stew, I don't dispute your right to express your views, but if I disagree, I feel that I have a right to express my view of your comments. As to whether Snodgrass was part of the problem, I have to disagree, as would all those who voted him POS, as well as Steve Bruce who has just paid double what we paid for him.

  • …..Canary on the Moon! ..Thanks for clearing that misunderstanding... I have no wish to ridicule any player about their appearance, any small disabilities they may have, the land of their birth or the colour of their skin!...They in general, and Snodgrass in particular tried to make us believe that our troubles would be over with him in the side....I found the opposite to that attitude, and felt that he, and his manager Hughton were in fact our troubles!....I have tried to help others see the light over the last 2years, and I am sorry to say, it has taken all this while for those that matter to come to that conclusion!....I had a look at the Hull Daily Mail out of curiosity, to see how their fans viewed his purchase....They to a man were 'Over the Moon'!....Being a helpful individual, I pointed out to them that we had much the same feelings when he joined us!....It has not been a complete success story since his arrival....I hope you will agree!.....

  • Stew- you've made a mistake. We are still in the Prem + Kevin Keelan is still in goal. Can't understand what all the fuss is about taking the number 9 shirt from the Dutch toe-stubber. He must've been the only Premiership centre-forward last season who's squad number was higher than the number of goals he scored !

  • Stew, I didn't rely on SO's post - I decided to check it for myself (I'm slightly embarrassed to admit) and yes as you so proudly and pedantically point out, it's the Hull Mail - sorry for my oversight. I suppose my reasons for moaning at the moaners is that most of them are old enough to be Snod's and RVW's grandfather so poking fun at hairstyles etc is all a bit pathetic - don't you think? As far as the footie itself is concerned, I've no doubt the current squad, well motivated and set up will walk the Championship so, apart from those in the last year of their contract who want to leave, and any that NA doesn't want, they should all be told they're under contract and are staying.

  • I am also assuming there are a lot on moves in and out to come. We do not need all 5 of the supposed strikers, even thoug some are not out and out strikers. We also need a cohesive defense, not just 5 or so defenders. I get worried by the clean slate comment as it sounds like there is no overall plan. I have the same feelings as I did when Gunn and Hughton were appointed but really hope it's an unnecessary worry this time.

  • Last season many references were made to "penaltygate" and how it affected RVW for the season. I have not seen his comment about losing the number nine shirt but before a ball is kicked has his confidence already been eroded by "numbergate"? Perhaps it was Adams cunning plan to unsettle him and ease the way out. Or is RVW just too thin skinned for a profession that is very unforgiving to sensitive souls?

  • RVW, after being built up so much naturally became the scapegoat for our terrible season. At the end of the day we were set up terribly by our inept manager, he didn't really stand much of a chance. The only real criticism you can make of the player is that he eventually buckled under all the pressure and missed some golden opportunities. I agree losing the no9 may help take some pressure off of him, and hopefully playing in the right system he will show the talent this season that led us to sign him. It makes sense to bring in Grabbon on the back of a 20+ goal season in the championship, but RVW can still have a part to play. Not very classy of archent, who helped build up Norwich's record signing, to continually kick him when he is down, I mean, they paid money for THAT photo? Why? To ridicule him?

  • Spot on Barking. I can only go by his Twitter comments, but recently he's certainly been talking like he wants to be here. When he returned from holiday he talked of how it felt good to return home to Norwich and looked forward to a new start and getting back up. Then he seemed a bit upset about his squad number getting changed which further suggests to me he wants to stay, otherwise why would it matter his no9 shirt was taken away?

  • As ever, Matthias demonstrates the wise head on young shoulders from the heart of defence. Shouldn't train with the first team if you're not committed to the club. Shouldn't be at the club for that matter. For all the flak given to RVW, I'm not aware that he wants away. If he works hard and impresses pre-season, give him another go. Not sure about the hair do though, nor the pose he strikes in this photo. Will that scare Chumpionship centre halves? Don't think so. He might also have unwittingly created a new nickname for himself...Jedwinkel. Fear not you devotees of the poster boy. The name will only last as long as the hair do. This time next week he'll have a new one. As for captions, I want to see Inter YaNan's caption no.3. Assuming YaNan can count from 1 to 4, it appears that Archie didn't care for his third caption. Spoil sport.

  • I don't think any of the players should be outcasts after last season. A lot of good players spoilt by the previous managers tactics in my opinion. Definitely need the slate wiped clean & NCFC fans need to get behind all of them. Genuinely think Hoops & RvW can score goals with a more attacking style if play. I'm sure neither of them would profess to be the best striker when playing up front on their own unless the whole team moves up to support them

  • Regarding the article, I think players that want to go have made it clear to Adams they want to go. I don't think any will kick up a huge fuss and as long as we start to develop the core of our new squad and they don't interfere that's fine. I honestly don't believe that making Ricky number 20 is a punishment, it's an attempt to put him out of the limelight. I am hopeful he stays and rebuilds because he a striker of huge potential quality and if he "switches on" he's a class or two above the championship level and an awesome "ace in the hole" for Norwich.

Dubai to number 9, all that positivity surely means goals, Matt333 to centre half, a wise head and steadying influence, in goal only one person never seems to let anything pass him by welcome Mad Brewer. There are a few posters on this site (and even the Hull Times, sadly)who only seem happy to hurl abuse at our players (from behind their pseudonyms) while pretending to support the team. Personally I hope RVW stays, but taking the number 9 shirt away was a terrible piece of man management if NA really wants him to stay

  • Spot on Waclor. I keep trying to remind people how its a fresh start with a manager with a (hopefully) different outlook on how the game should be played. People who may not have been in form or flavour of the month last season may suddenly be key players at this different level we now find NCFC in. People seem to keen to simply go "get rid, (insert abuse here), hes rubbish". To do that, someone actually has to make an offer even if the club do want rid.

Some of you are like nagging old women harping on about some misdemeanour from before the war. Whatever we feel about the performances of some players last season, Hughton lost the way, demotivated the players and threw away our premiership status. We now need all the players to rise to the challenge of bouncing back stronger than before or leave the club if an acceptable offer comes in. Hoops, Rvw, Pilks, Wes and Seb probably fall into the shall we say "Sulky" group but each and every one could be key players next season. Get behind them NOT on their backs.

I am easy whatever happens, if he goes then he simply joins a long queue of others that have passed from the club, if he stays I will still be fully behind him all the time he puts effort in.

  • There's no club football going on Cornwall so what do you expect other than talk? Mattias, players may well want to move on, but that's irrelevant unless they do actually move on. That's normal. Everyone knows that loyalty is no more alive in football than it is in any other part of society, with the sole exception of the extraordinary Mr Ruddy. Joey Barton went as far as saying he wouldn't ever play in the Championship with QPR last Summer, went on to play in the Champtionship with QPR and was the backbone of their team.

Im been vocal all along in my opinion that I hope the likes of Wes, RVW all remain at the club, but if the slates clean like Adams says and those players still want out surely it be better to distance them from the core squad who want to bounce back. Just my opinion anyway, im likely wrong.
