Neil Adams savours his first Norwich City win against Watford but scotches talk of a £4m move for Celtic’s Kris Commons

Neil Adams’ praised Norwich City’s patience after wearing down 10-men Watford to earn his first Canaries’ victory since taking control in a 3-0 Carrow Road success.

Bradley Johnson, Lewis Grabban and Alex Tettey clinched the victory after the Hornets played 88 minutes with a man less when Joel Ekstrand was red-carded for felling Nathan Redmond.

City were always in control but needed a double salvo either side of the hour mark to end Watford’s resistance after Johnson’s sublime opener before the interval.

“I’m obviously delighted and very pleased with how we applied ourselves today,” said Adams. “Of course the sending off so early is a massive turning point; just like we were saying last weekend when it went against us at Wolves. We know how it can affect you. The opposition went 4-4-1 and just (Troy) Deeney up front who is a massive handful even on his own so they always had that out ball. When you have got that numerical advantage for so long you have to be patient, you have to keep the ball and you have to show quality. I thought we did that. We scored three and could have scored three more. I was delighted with the application.”

Adams backed the officials’ decision to dismiss Ekstrand although the City boss admitted he had not seen a replay of the early incident.

“I have not seen it since,” he said. “I have seen Nathan on the floor and straight away you are looking at the officials. The linesman had the best view of it that I could see and he didn’t seem to want to give it but the referee and his officials have obviously seen enough to feel it warrants a red card.

“I spoke to Nathan and he said he didn’t know what had hit him. He was on the ground. He is not pointing the finger at the defender. He has had a bang on his nose and he had to change his bloodied shirt and it was a big advantage for us.”

Adams brought on Leroy Fer for his first appearance of the new season and confirmed afterwards he wants to keep the Dutch midfielder beyond the transfer window despite Fer being linked with the likes of QPR and Sevilla during the summer. The City boss remains in the market for new recruits but dismissed reports in Scotland earlier on Saturday suggesting he is ready to make a £4m bid for Celtic’s Kris Commons.

“I’ve just been told that. Its news to me,” he said. “I don’t know where they come from some of these. Of course we are looking at players. But no, there is nothing in that.”

  • Nice to know Brew, we also have a Fat Cat down here in Colchester, not quite such a wide selection of ales though. Chipolata's downgraded to 'Icelands' bonus 50% free pork free sausages[other carp brands are available].The concern is its all rumours about players leaving with very little about any incoming, apart from Lincs and his one on Cameron Jerome, and thats not cheering me up.The result did and same again on tuesday will do.

  • Malaga, I`m increasingly getting the feeling that Laffs is a quasi-Holty. He gets all over the place in order to benefit the team. Holty would often get on to the right wing, and got back to help the defence regularly. It requires a big heart and a big `engine`. Early days yet, but if Kyle can get anywhere near to the `Holt Standard`, then we have a jewel of a player. Like you, I`d like to see him in the danger area more. I`m glad we got that bit of `luck` with the 10 men, even if Nathan had to take one on the nose for the team. It may have rekindled a `winning mentality`. Let`s keep it going, chaps. Also like you, I think Fer can do better than QPR, and NCFC can do better than £8m. I`d rather Leroy stayed, at least for this season, or until it`s clear he is not with a sufficiently ambitious club...

  • It seems pretty certain Fer will go to QPR. In some ways I can understand the move because he wants to remain in the shop window which is the Prem League. However I am not sure QPR is a wise choice and I am surprised a bigger club has not come in for him. Anyway I wish him all the best. On the plus side we looked much brighter and quicker yesterday, played the ball around with more purpose and our collective body language looked far better than at Wolves. Tettey had a great game and I also felt Whittaker was much improved. Agree that Ruddy looks a little sharper and what he had to do he dealt with cleanly. One other point: I was pleased to see him throw the ball out more, because it keeps us in possession. Especially as his kicking isn't that brilliant. One final thing: I felt Lafferty, despite having an excellent game, should have been used more centrally where he is a real handful and can hold the ball up for Grabban. Glad that Adams learnt the hard was but quickly that Redmond is not a centre forward but best suited to an attacking wide position. Tuesday will perhaps be a greater challenge and will then start to give us a fairer indication of how we are progressing.

  • Fagen: Reward the guilty. Punish the innocent. Praise and honours for the non-participants. Did they really dispense with the services of four programme sellers? I wonder if the hordes of half-time siIIy forkers are next on the agenda? Their tine has come... Have they downgraded the Board-Box Buffet? Bring your own packed lunch. Plastic cutlery provided. £1 per item. (Finger buffet recommended). The tea lady was replaced with a machine. Another cost saving exercise is the downgrading of Hot-Dogs to Warm Chipolatas. Increased revenues from upping the price of a plastic bottle of warm Carling to just £5.

  • I think I did hear a contented purr emanating from the boardroom. It was when they announced the sacking of the four programme sellers especially when they realised that one lady had ben doing the job for 30 years. If they can sack a few dozen more then they will be able to offer Bassong a loyalty bonus.

  • I agree with you Timberman, Ruddy looked back to his best yesterday and did not put a foot wrong. Not sure if it is just me but he looked a couple of pounds lighter than last year, not saying he was unfit but perhaps he has been training extra hard this pre-season. The only downside is, some Premiership clubs will surely have taken note.

  • The starting midfield looked strong enough today without Fer and we still have Howson to come back in so no need to hit the panic button. I am sure Fer would rather be in the Premiership having played at the world cup so see no point standing in his way as long as the fee is right for us. O'Neil also looked fine when he came on so lets see our money spent on a decent centre half. Lafferty looks to be a good target man despite being played as a left winger and we still have Hooper once he is fully fit. Tuesdays game will perhaps be more telling if both sides keep 11 men on the park.

  • QPR have agreed fee of £8million for Fer. Can't afford to turn it down, but that will mean over £15 brought in in transfers and we have only spent on Grabban. Now perhaps we can get a centre back, strong midfielder and another forward. Afterall we were told replacements would be signed if there were exits from Carrow Road.

Cant see those three coming up with a convincing bid though .

He was the one that pushed to acknowledge the fans at the end of a disaster last season when others were disappearing down the tunnel if I remember correctly. One I'd be very sorry to see go as he's a terrific character as well as a good player.

By the way, David Moyse is on beINSport as a pundit tonight - pity he slipped through our managerial search, although I harked for him loudly a few months ago ! Lets hope that we settle down and start putting some decent results together now. Hopefully we will get the good old Polyanna potion back again Brew !

  • All good, but why did we switch off when we were 3-0 up after 61 minutes ? Who decided to take the foot off the pedal. We are in a horribly physical, mean league, a lot of tough games coming our way, we still need to get battle hardened otherwise we are going to get brushed aside - like we did at Wolves. I think we should have won more ruthlessly and more convincingly today. BTW how many chances did we miss ?
