Neil Adams wants his Norwich City players to up the ante in Tuesday’s pre-season trip to Conference Premier Braintree Town (kick-off 7.45pm).

The Canaries’ chief was satisfied with a physical workout in testing conditions at Dereham with Kyle Lafferty settling a tight affair at Aldiss Park and Adams is keen to build on some encouraging signs. City’s 21-man squad against the Magpies will be boosted by the additions of Ricky van Wolfswinkel, Martin Olsson and Republic of Ireland duo Anthony Pilkington and Wes Hoolahan.

The Norwich boss is keen to retain his mix-and-match approach against a side who finished just outside the play-offs last season.

“We’ll take a big group again and look to give them minutes,” he said. “The physios indicated everyone seemed to be fine so those four or five other lads will come back in for Braintree and we’ll go with two sides again. Yes, we expect it to be a step up on all levels and that is how it should be. We’ll then take it on again in Italy and finishing with Nice and Celta Vigo is a good standard opposition to get us ready for when it really matters.”

Andrew Surman’s versatility saw the midfielder deployed on the left of a diamond against Dereham before returning for the final 30 minutes in a left-back role. Surman was deemed surplus to requirements by Chris Hughton last season and loaned to Bournemouth but Adams is urging him to take his chance in the coming weeks to try and force his way into City’s Championship plans. The 27-year-old is one of a clutch of senior players entering the final year of their current Carrow Road deals.

“He has come back in excellent condition. Of course we have seen him play on that left corner of a diamond a few years ago and play it well,” said Adams. “He has a superb left foot and put some decent balls through in that first half and then he showed his versatility going on at left-back.

“We brought 21 players to Dereham and they need to make me feel, ‘Yes, I like what I see there’ during this period. If they are in the plans then of course we need to sit down with those lads.”

  • I`m a bit concerned that Norwich have announced the squad too late to prevent some of them not knowing they`re not in it. Btw, as far as I know, nobody has ever signed in as Highland Canary, but Tj seemed to be replying to an invisible guest. Hence ToxicGWS`s Banquo comment. Now we know you were talking to\about yourself it`s all explained. There are those that do sign in pretending to be somebody else, though. SO tedious, the noo. Send them to the TrOSsachs.

  • I see NCFC have not made the same mistake they made the other day by announcing the squad for tonight a day early so people can debate who isnt there and who is. Hopefully its same squad as saturday but with added additions of Wes, Pilks, Olsson & RVW etc.

  • Mad Brewer - I am a "highland Canary". There may have been another' who previously signed in as "Highland Canary" but This is not myself. Apologies if I have caused an old Norfolk codger an issue and I hope the trossachs improve, a poults of Haggis should help improve the affliction

  • Tj, just so I haven`t got this wrong, YOU are Highland Canary?? You have been referring to yourself in the 3rd person, which is confusing for old Norfolk dullards the likes of me. As for having my Trossachs trapped, it would hurt my Rannoch more. At least we now know who Banquo is. It is he, himself, alone. No 3rd person needed. Mystery solved. Thanks to TGWS. ;-) Btw, bluelight, it is Koch Latrine you should be concerned about. Get yer Atlas out!!

  • I said Surman played for long spells at Left Back for Southampton while we had Lambert in charge but everyone told me I was being silly. He earned rave reviews at Saints for playing Left Back & Left Mid and South Africa even tried getting him to play for them. I was never overly keen on him playing more centrally as I didnt think he was strong enough + we had better options there at the time. I certainly wouldnt be against him remaining with us this season. Technically gifted lad, especially at championship level.

  • Alas, it looks like Tj has the me myself I affliction, as his post would suggest he's also Highland Canary allbeit only within the context of his posts. Still, you have to give him love and affection and show some emotion, at least (I think) he now admits to it.

  • Highland Canary - Mad Brewer, I am a Highland Canary, been supporting City since 1972 when I moved to Norwich. Season ticket holder for many years, moved to the Highlands nearly 4 years ago (honest). Currently in Norwich visiting family. Like to stimulate debate. Local club in Highlands Ross County.

  • Looks like Banquo is shaking his gory locks at Tj again. Where`s ToxicGasWarningSystem when you need him? C`mon Tj, who IS Highland Canary? Or are you Highland Canary? I feel I am caught between Koch Latrine and The Trossachs. Please consider that Achray from the heart.

  • Highland Canary - agree KA, AS is a very underrated player who provides the link between defence and attack which was missing last year. He had a good season with the "Cherries" last year doing a undertaking a similar role ( and they did pretty well for a small club) . The sooner NA knows who is going and staying the better it will be for the club so he can knit the remaining players together and bring in any required players, At the moment he could be wasting a lot of time and effort on players that will not be here. Believe the transfer deadline should be closed at least two weeks before the season starts.

  • I hope Surman stays, too. I think the only place he might go is back to Bournemouth - in fact, I sort of expected that to happen. Maybe Eddie Howe doesn`t have the funds for fee\wages?. Maybe Surs actually wants to stay with us, and maybe Adams really does rate him. As LincsCan says, no relegation hangover - and no detoxification needed post Krughton\Bewilderwood. Same applies to Elliott Bennett. A few of the old Lambo signings may be having their renaissance.

  • I am with you 'Lincs', I like Andrew Surman and is a classy and cultured player. His return is like having a new signing. If he scores a goal against Wolves next month of the same quality as on our last visit to Molyneux, I will be delighted.

  • I hope we keep hold of Surman this season because along with Grabban he has recent experience of the Chump. Also, like Lafferty, they are unaffected by relegation hangovers.
