Player ratings for both Norwich City and Manchester United following their Premier League clash.
• Norwich City:
6 Mark Bunn: Question mark over first goal. Brave stop from Robin van Persie. Denied Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck.
5 Russell Martin: Referee’s whistle spared an inquest into his close range miss. Superb early defensive block to thwart Rooney.
6 Michael Turner: Fine interventions to deny van Persie and Rooney before the interval. Was attracted to the ball for United’s second.
6 Sebastien Bassong: Dominant in the first period until van Persie reacted quicker for opener. Slipped by Rooney for the second.
5 Javier Garrido: May feel aggrieved at his caution for a collision with Antonio Valencia. Tough assignment, but toiled away.
6 Robert Snodgrass: Warm reception from the United fans for his Leeds’ connections. One peach of a cross cleared by Anderson.
6 Jonny Howson: Disciplined defensive screening role. Struggled when Shinji Kagawa was switched inside.
6 Bradley Johnson: Key man in the first half. Unable to check Kigawa’s late influence. Tired effort for Rooney’s long range smack.
6 Anthony Pilkington: Limited opportunity to showcase his attacking quality. Unable to stop the threat for United’s opener.
5 Wes Hoolahan: Tried to forage on scraps. No doubting his work ethic in defensive situations to offer another obstacle to overcome.
6 Grant Holt: Little change to be had out of Nemanja Vidic. Debatable foul given on Patrice Evra for Russell Martin’s chance.
Subs: Elliott Bennett (for Snodgrass) 5, Kei Kamara (for Hoolahan) 5, Luciano Becchio (for Holt) 5
• Manchester United:
6 David De Gea: Quiet shift but no trace of aerial vulnerability when City did sporadically load balls into the box.
6 Chris Smalling: Powerful athlete. May have offered greater support to Antonio Valencia.
6 Jonny Evans: Seems to be maturing into a composed central defender. Left his partner to largely deal with Grant Holt.
7 Nemanja Vidic: Controlled his personal duel with Norwich’s skipper. Excellent anticipation to cut out Russell Martin’s cross.
6 Patrice Evra: Bruising tussle with Robert Snodgrass. Age has largely dimmed his attacking prowess.
7 Antonio Valencia: Quality supply line. Picked out Robin van Persie for United’s first. Pace and muscular intent
7 Michael Carrick: Class operator now finally earning long-overdue recognition. Fine pass to trigger the second goal.
6 Anderson: Good positional sense to head clear a vicious Snodgrass cross. The ballast allowing Carrick to shine.
8 Shinji Kagawa: Composed finisher. Touch of fortune about his first but nerveless to complete his hat-trick. Flourished centrally.
8 Wayne Rooney: Turned a contest into a cruise. Two assists for Shinji Kagawa and a fantastic long range finish sealed the win.
7 Robin van Persie: Not the Dutchman at his potent best but top class movement. Key touch for United’s opener.
Subs: Danny Welbeck (for van Persie) 6, Tom Cleverley (for Anderson) 5
Chris Hughton insists he will spend his summer transfer windfall wisely after Jonny Howson’s multi-million pound goal boost to Norwich’s close season coffers.
