Manager Neil Adams warns Norwich City must ‘be ready’ to react if players make summer exits

Norwich City head into the final week of the close season still with last term’s squad intact – although everyone knows how quickly that can change.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The Canaries are yet to see the departure of a contracted player since Premier League relegation was confirmed, while Lewis Grabban remains City’s only signing.

Most agree this summer’s World Cup is postponing the rebuilding plans of teams and players, but City boss Neil Adams feels ready for all eventualities.

“If players leave, we’ve got to be ready to fill their positions,” said Adams. “I don’t want players leaving, but of course I’m realistic to accept that might be the case.

“I spoke to all the players at the end of last season – obviously not as full-time manager then, just to see whether they wanted to leave or be part of getting us back. And virtually to a man, they were committed and there was a hunger there. Players who wanted to go and put it right.

“But of course, you don’t know what’s around the corner. The good thing for us is we don’t have to sell anyone.

“But you’ve got to be realistic as well. If an offer comes in from a certain club, a player may then have his head turned and we will have to deal with that as and when.”

The long-term summer speculation linking Europa League-bound Hull City with a move for City winger Robert Snodgrass continued over the weekend, with suggestions of a £5m offer on the table – still some way short of a reported £6.5m asking price.

  • I honestly can't see a mass exodus...they must know that Neil Adams is gonna change things to an attacking style. It's NO good having players who don't want to be at the club so they should go!!!...I honestly think Ruddy, Hooper and Fer will stay but can see Snodgrass, Bassong, Garrido, Van Wolfswinkel and Pilkington going...Hoolahan might stay...I think a word from Adams and Holt thats he's wanted at the club would make a difference...we just have to make sure we don't sell cheap and bring in decent replacements...

  • Just for the record bluelight. While I said earlier within the context of a certain part of a post about walking the league its not what I actually think will happen. (Far from it). All I meant was, if by magic we managed to keep a lot of our top players, especially ones like Fer who is at the World Cup as part of a potential winner of the tournements squad we should be looked upon as being capable of walking the league. We wont, as we are NCFC ;) we will find a way to self-implode im sure but just generally saying that was all folks.

  • There will continue to be lots of speculation right up to and after the season has started. Its what we all enjoy. A radical thought - do you think Adams will actually use a squad system - something that CH showed no signs of understanding anymore than the effective use of substitutes?

  • Bluelight I kind of feel the same way. Not sure if I'm just being a bit cautious after all the optimism last summer which ended in disappointment. Promotion will be tough no matter how good our team is or how strong the books are.

  • UK players surely would rather have an exciting season playing for NCFC and winning games and maybe getting a medal than sitting on a bench being cover for someone else at a top club or embroiled in a relegation scrap with the others? The foreign players may well go, but maybe that's not a bad thing for the Championship and the style of football... I come back to what I said a few months back, line up the players, ask all who want to stay to step forward, and anyone who hesitates, advertise them!!

  • Only reason I say under a cloud is because hes barely been mentioned, let alone used on the bench. I understand what happened. We signed Olsson, he did superb and Garrido couldnt get a look in. I just get the impression he will leave for a low figure to someone without much comment from the club. I've personally no problem with Garrido. Imagine we sold Olsson? Id be gutted as Olsson was my POTS but i'd be more than happy with garrido in place in the championship.

  • Anyone else think that the Garrido situation is odd? We had him on loan for a season and he played most of our games. We then signed him permanently for the following season and he barely got a look in. Sure Olsson is probably a better bet, but when he is out or injured Garrido does well. Now people speak of Garrido (on year left on contract, plus one additional year as an option) leaving under a cloud.

  • Everyone desperate for forwards,IMO we now have forwards to spare. Martin will no longer be right back as he is now too slow and may be used as a centre back. Snoddy will probably go but although he works hard is a bit of a prima donna. We need to bulk up the defence and midfield. Ruddy I think will stay as a top team would only want him as a bench warmer unless he is attreacted to better wages.

  • I agree chap, and despite him not playing as well as he should have when returning from injury hes still too good for the championship. Hopefully nobody comes in though and we get a year out of him at least. Hes not the kinda guy whose going to cause a problem, grump and look for a way out (despite how the media will try twist it).

  • Despite what is being said, there will no doubt be some changes. If NCFC really are going for Lafferty, this strongly suggest that there will be at least two of the recognised strikers leaving one way or another. I would like to keep both GH and RVW but they will need real support next year if they are to achieve their potential. I hope that we will be looking for a play maker for the mid field which we missed last season which I am not sure Wes can fully do and he is now 32. He is undoubtedly good at the close range stuff but not so sure about spreading the ball around the pitch. In defence, we need to introduce some younger blood some time during the year if not at the start. I know it may take some time but several are now in their late 20's or older and can be exposed against pacier younger opposition.

  • Players have 4 options as I see it: go to a top PL club and end up on the bench most of the season as cover for someone else; go to a lesser PL club and likely spend the season in a relegation scrap; go to a European Club (those most likely are those who came from one); have a positive experience at NCFC winning games. I think the greatest risk for losing players are those going back to European clubs...

  • Im still convinced Ruddy will be here. I certainly hope he is anyway. Luckily Tim Krul hasnt played for Holland in the world cup. That was my main concern as to whether Ruddy would stay or not. I figured he would play, do amazing and then the hype around bigger clubs buying him would increase meaning Newcastle would need a replacement. Pilks, Bassong, RVW will all leave, im sure. Whether on loan or as full transfers for likely low figures I dunno. Im undecided on Wes & Fer. Personally I hope and pray they are still here because I feel they could be the difference between us walking the league in style or simply battling it out and just about getting promotion at first attempt. I think with Wes it depends whether Adams has assured him hes now part of his plans. I think under Hughton hes been royally messed around (like a lot of the squad) but we have to remember we are playing at a lower level now and that changes the ball game totally. Hopefully we will now be playing games on the front foot and he could well feature on a regular basis. With Fer he is a genuinely nice guy and im sure he will stay if no clubs come in for him. He won't be pushing to leave if you get me (like Ruddy). However if bigger clubs come in, hes going to be interested. We have to accept that. Fingers crossed hes still here or we at least get silly money for him. Garrido, Becchio I can see leaving under a cloud, likely for hardly anything and the club wont really mention it.

  • If Ruddy leaves these two keepers would make good replacements. Brad Jones (Liverpool reserve) or Maty Ryan (Brugge) If Hooper leaves than Mathew Leckie (Frankfurt) is a good strong striker. Reminds me of a young version of Grant Holt and has the speed to play on the wing. As for Wes, Tommy Oar (Utrecht) would similarly make a good replacement. Jason Davidson (Utrecht) also be a good replacement for Basso. He can play centre defence or centre midfield. So has the ability to play the ball out from the back.

We are in an enviable position and can expect to see some players leave and new ones arrive once we get into July and I sincerely hope that the bulk of the squad will stay and achieve a minimum of a 'top 10 finish'

  • So odd you say that! Was catching up on the latest news in Italy & German over the weekend and going through each squad etc and noticed he was still at Palermo. Was thinking to myself "how long will it be until he returns to the UK". He had a fairly decent season in Serie B with them though so unsure whether they'd do business unless hes home sick.

  • Hard to know who will go really. It all depends on who wants our players and how much they want them. I'm glad we haven't rushed into selling our squad on the cheap though. I think with a couple of buys, this squad could walk the championship. Ideally, nobody leaves (apart from those surplus to requirements), Rhodes comes in, Gnabry on loan to provide a plan B and some exciting unpredictability and we get a spare, no nonsense defender like Barnett back, jobs a good'un!

  • Not entirely understanding some of the quotes within this article. Players who wanted to go and put it right. Is that his way of claiming people like Wes have told him they want to stay now (even though they could quite easily have their head turned again with one call from an agent). Not going to over think this one. Just wait and see. I think we can all Hazard a guess which players will leave (whether its on loan or on the cheap). I personally hope we start with near enough the same squad + a few additions. We've got a very good championship squad, heck we had a premier league squad easily capable of a comfy midtable finish. We just didnt have the right man-manager to get the best out of them. If Adams is the right man, brilliant, we dont need wholesale changes, just a few additions and the obvious few sales\departures.

  • The position this club is in has to be the envy of many, particularly the Prancing Donkeys from Portaloo Road! Contrast the position they are in as are majority of other clubs in all divisions with the cash and asset rich position at Carrow Road! Can anyone remember when this was last our position? If players heads are turned and they wish to go can you really blame them as their life at the top is very short and most finish in their early thirties.

  • @lincs canary. Do not worry, we don't have to sell anyone in order to buy Jordan Rhodes. In fact, I have heard that we have already made an offer of £8m already for him. The deal hasn't gone through yet (obviously or he'd be at Carrow Road now) but perhaps NCFC will start pushing when the World Cup is over? The long and short of it is that we don't have to sell in order to buy new players. We have no debt and very deep pockets. It's a brave new world for our team. Roll on the new season. I am hoping for a top 2 position at the end of the season.

I read the speculation about Hull and Snodgrass but in my paper it went further and said unnamed clubs were after Ruddy. It concluded the money raised would allow Norwich to make a bid for Blackburn striker Rhodes.
