Norwich City chief Neil Adams insists the ball is now in Andrew Surman’s court over his long term future at the club.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Surman was not part of City’s matchday squad for the 1-0 Championship derby win at Ipswich on Saturday but Adams wants the classy midfielder to follow the likes of Wes Hoolahan, Ryan Bennett and Michael Turner, who have all signed up for extended tours of duty at Carrow Road in recent weeks.

Surman is entering the final year of his current City deal and has been touted with a return to Bournemouth after an impressive season-long loan stint on the south coast.

The 28-year-old admitted during the build-up to the new campaign he needs regular football at this stage of his career, but Adams has made it clear he is only interested in attracting new recruits, with City now heavily linked to Belgian international midfielder Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe.

“He is a player I want to keep,” he said. “The same with Michael and I was delighted he wanted to do that and we could get that done and we are talking to Andrew now. There is 10 or 11 days left for him to make a decision. I’ve said all along that I will be glad when the window closes. Of course we will look to add and keep the ones we want. We don’t have to sell but if the right money comes along you have to look at it, but I have stressed all along we are hoping to add.”

Adams played down speculation of a done deal for Club Brugge’s Odjidja-Ofoe after watching his side’s Portman Road success. Reports across the Channel on Saturday claimed the 25-year-old powerhouse had travelled to England to discuss personal terms after City agreed a fee with his Belgian club although Odjidja-Ofoe is still included in Brugge’s squad for Sunday afternoon’s league trip to Mechelen.

Adams confirmed City remain in the market for a replacement for Leroy Fer who sealed a club-record switch to QPR last week. The summer transfer window closes on September 1.

“We’ve been linked with loads. I got names thrown at me every week,” he said. “Yeah, Leroy has gone and we are looking at players to replace him and there are many out there but the difference between enquiries, speculation and firm bids are miles apart. There is nothing imminent.”

Odjidja-Ofoe was a second-half substitute in Club Brugge’s 2-1 Uefa Europa League play-off, first leg win over Grasshoppers (Zurich) on Thursday night. The former Anderlecht and Hamburg midfielder has played 165 games for Brugge since 2009 and represented Belgium at every age group level from Under-15. He has five senior caps and was part of Belgium’s Uefa 2012 European Championship qualifying campaign, but did not go to the recent World Cup in Brazil.

  • No hope for who, exactly? I feel quite hopeful at the moment. Hopefully, that hopefulness will last. It is bI0ody dark in here now, what with all this grim Bank Holiday weather, brought about by a surfeit of pessimism in Yabba Dabba Abu Dhabi and the queues of `people` carriers trying to get into the B&Q car park. Global warming writ large on the Naaaridge Ring Road. Bank Holiday? Sofa, so good. Decking great. Patio heater free with every Gazebo or instant Koi Carp pond. Such fun.

  • Bravo Bill Punton's bald patch , that song works ! I have been struggling to think of a Vadis song , but could only come up with something atonal and discordant like Benjamin Britten penning some fresh wail for Peter Pears , themed around the muscular thews of Aldeborough fisher-boys . I think the Barclay could do the atonal and discordant bits OK , but might struggle with the libretto , so your Beatles rip-off is exquisitely timed ( as Paddy Davitt would say ) Let us hope it catches on , and we get to hear the bellowed choruses echoing off the walls of Morrison's .

LincsCan\Norwegian; imagine a referee getting his book out to Quo Vadis: "What`s your name?" - "Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe". - "OK; I`ll let you off this time" ;-) How`s about a parody of The Ting Tings` "That`s not my name" for Quo, guys `n` gals??

  • I posted a couple of weeks back that I expected Surman to see how things panned out before deciding if he wanted to sign a new contract. First game he was picked in a diamond midfield that simply did not work, since then we have chosen the better system with two holding midfielders and I would expect that to continue. Therefore there is little chance of him getting a regular place in the team so I suspect he will be off before the window closes. I still find the Bassong situation bizarre, if he refuses to play then he has broken his contract and should be released to save the wage bill. On the other hand if he is prepared to play then surely he would be better used along with Turner rather than playing Martin as he is a far better central defender. I have heard rumours of his comments but the manager and club have to be bigger than that and do what is best for the club, play him or dump him, if he said something out of order then surely that is a reason to sack him without a pay off, that is what would happen for mot workers I am sure or at least give him a written warning.

I was listening to Treasure Quest on Norfolk this morning and David Clayton said that anyone out there who had not heard yesterdays Canary Call should listen on I Player asap. Apparently Rab Bluster was singing 'top of the league at Portman Road' live on air. Clayton said it was hilarious. Hmm. more like nauseating or gut wrenching. I'm not prepared to take the risk.

  • Stormy an apt question. The answer is nothing. It's now reasonably widespread knowledge that he will never play for NCFC again. This is all well and good except for the fact that he is (allegedly) drawing a small fortune. If we said £50k we would not be far off. Surely they should give him a free transfer to anywhere even if we end up having to carry on paying part of his wages.

  • I was unhappy to see Fer leave, but also watched a bit of the Spurs QPR game, and although that was his first game for QPR, maybe revising my oppinion about losing him - especially the late chaallenge getting himself a yellow. If Odjidja-Ofoe is useful and can get another good defender who can play a strong center-back role we should be set. However, should we go back-up, then huge changes needed for another EPL campaign from owner on down if we are to become an EPL fixture.

As for the Belgian prospect , the immediate positive I see is that he is playing for Brugge , in a sea-level swamp , which means he is already perfectly acclimatised to playing in Carrer Rud's environmental conditions . • You're quite right Trucker, so far the defence have done very well and the Blackburn goal seemed more due to no midfield player tracking back than a mistake in the defence. However you need cover and competition for places which we do not have now. So while you making signings for cover you may as well buy in quality for instant competition ie get the best available not just a player who will do at a pinch.

  • Has Vadis already signed then, Dubya? It does seem odd that we are in need of a quality CB when we have one already, being paid megabucks for sitting in Naughty Corner. Irish, if Ipswich is one of the "better teams", then NCFC`s future looks bright. Forest, Derby and Cardiff look more dangerous - so does Ollie`s Millwall. Ipswich looked poor yesterday and we could have buried them - deep. Granted, the results vs Blackburn & Watford were good. I`m pretty pleased about yesterday`s result too!!

Lets hope the transfer window does not eat up any more of our first choice players. BTW then are we likely to see Hooper, Becchio & Bassong back ? Lets hope we can keep these players and they can have a chance to play themselves into contention. It we can keep a strong squad (which we will need this season) then we may have a chance at instant promotion. OTBC

They clearly don't figure in the boss's plans..I'm amazed that he Becchio hasn't been snapped up by a Championship club. I suspect he is not short of a bob or two, and a lower salary at The Cherries may not bother him much; he just wants to play. From City`s point of view, I wouldn`t be surprised if the Board accepts a reasonable offer. `Undisclosed`, naturally. Know nothing about this Belgian chappie.

  • The defence yesterday were excellent despite the disruption of losing a player in the first 5 minutes so although a bit of extra cover would be welcome two goals conceded in four games is not a bad record to have. Obviously a lot depends on how bad Ryan Bennett is. Hopefully he'll be back soon.

  • You still need at least one defender Neil. Martin and Turner always seem to leave gaps between them. Martin will never be dominant in the air and Turner takes ages to turn and get back. This week you gained one in Cuellar but lost Ryan Bennett. Don't waste all teh goals in teh team by conceding too many silly ones through a lack of class in defence.
