Norwich City’s summer signing Kyle Lafferty is ready to accept the responsibility of firing the Canaries back into the Premier League.

The Northern Irishman has already been on target twice in the pre-season wins over Dereham and Braintree but is poised to miss Sunday’s opening match of the club’s Italian tour against Serie C Novara with a leg injury.

Lafferty arrived at Carrow Road after a successful season in Italian football spearheading Palermo’s promotion to the top flight and the striker knows what is required to repeat the trick.

“It’s nice to score a goal no matter who you play against, but these games are all about getting the team settled, and getting to know each other and who you’re playing with, but it’s always a bonus when you score a goal,” he said.

“I feel good. Last year I matched my highest goal tally in the league in one season, so hopefully this year I can go one better and break that record. That’s not the most important thing though – what are most important are my performances and getting this team back in the Premier League.”

Lafferty, speaking to the club’s official site, already feels at home within the tight-knit Norwich dressing room.

“This is one of the best teams for team bonding that I’ve been in,” he said. “Everyone gets on so well, and that will count for a lot when we have to dig deep. Seeing the way we’ve trained and worked so hard, there’s a hunger there to win as a team and fight for each other.

“There are a few jokers in the team which is always good. The lads have been superb, and in training too it’s been easy to know the guys. At the end of the day we’re here to do one thing and I’m pretty sure we’ll be up there.”

  • Hopefully he'll be awesome. When we bought Holt though he had just had a prolific season with Shrewsbury, and Iwan had proved himself in the prem with Leicester. The point was that Lafferty's record so far hasn't met his initial promise.

  • He's been brought in as the solid target man that we missed last season. Grabban\ Hooper will play off him. Idea is he'll win the ball in the air + either have a go himself, or set up the smaller twisty-turny guy in the box for a close range shot....remember Holty + Iwan...?..."Ooh arr it be rocket science. Moi brain carn't cope see...?".. DOH !

  • Kyle could quite easily be part of Plan A as opposed to be thrown on with 80 mins gone to rescue a point. Great to see genuine competition between the strikers instead of rotating a low confidence, non-performing duo .......... in a weird kind of way this could do RVW and Hoops the world of good - OTBC

  • he doesn't have a great scoring record - only got into double figures (11!) twice in eight full seasons, none at a better level than the championship. suppose he is the big guy we've been missing, not really sure what NA is expecting from him though
